I know when my Mother was 15 or 16, about 1935, she and a friend skipped school in Spencer and started to hike to the Humphrey school, they were picked up by the Greyhound bus driver, I am sure he thought, "these poor girls. having to walk so far". They went to class, had lunch and took the train back to Spencer. The train cost them five cents.
