Classification: Obituary
Surnames: Rawlings
Preston Citizen, 12/12/12

On Dec. 5, 2012, Boyd Rawlings, a longtime resident of Seaside, Calif., passed away from natural causes. He was born in 1925 to Merlin and Erma Rawlings of Fairview, Idaho.

Boyd grew up in a large family on a farm in Fairview where he lived until he enlisted in the military. Boyd served in the U.S. Navy for a few years but spent the majority of his military career in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea, Germany, Vietnam and Okinawa before retiring as a sergeant after over 20 years of military service. It was his Army career that brought him to Ft. Ord and Seaside, where he would raise his family and live for over 50 years.

After retiring from the military, Boyd went to work for the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation working at the Custom House Plaza in Monterey, Point Lobos State Reserve and a variety of the other state parks in the Monterey area.

After Boyd retired from his state parks job he took to tending his garden at home.

He loved to work in his garden and take care of his fruit trees, sometimes for hours each day.

He would often be seen by his neighbors puttering around the yard planting tomatoes, flowers or a variety of other plants.

He spent years trying to find just that right tomato for his garden.

Boyd enjoyed visiting national parks and landmarks with his family and developed a fondness for the Petrified Forest in Arizona, which he found fascinating.

He was also a supporter of the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota and often visited there when he and his wife would travel to the area.

Boyd was preceded in death by one daughter. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, three sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

No services are planned but the family wishes to convey their gratitude to all relatives, friends and neighbors for their kindness, thoughts and prayers.
