Preston Citizen, 03/13/13
John B. Henderson passed away gently on March 3, 2013, at his home in San Marcos, California. His family was by his side. He was born Oct. 21, 1927, in Preston, to Lawrence and Marguerite Henderson of Clifton.
John graduated from Preston High School in 1946 and felt honored to have been part of the basketball team that won the school’s first-ever state championship. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After two years of honorable service, he returned to Idaho, graduating from Idaho State College in 1952.
He then went to work for the Social Security Administration, where he was respected for his integrity and fairness. At retirement, in 1986, he was serving as Acting Regional Commissioner, responsible for the Social Security, Medicare and Supplemental Security Income programs in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
It was in retirement that John was finally able to play golf as often as he wanted. His joy in the game was never more evident than when he was teaching a great-grandchild how to putt. It is also worth noting that family and friends cherished and sometimes marveled at his dry, witty and pun-filled sense of humor.
John is survived by Barbara, his wife of forty years; his daughters Terilee and Dahdri McCormick; son John Michael; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley Keller and Joanne Pattis; and brothers Rex and Blair.
In accordance with John’s wishes, there were no funeral services. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Idaho State University Foundation, MS 8050, Pocatello, Idaho 83209; noting that it is for the John B. Henderson Memorial.
