Barbara Hess Cook, 81, joined her Father in Heaven on September 23, 2012. Barbara was born on January 22, 1931 in Clifton, ID to Lewis and Arvilla Moser Hess. She lived in Clifton until 1945, when her family moved to Nampa, ID. She graduated from Nampa High School in 1949; after graduation she attended Nampa Business College and worked for Idaho Department of Agriculture. Soon after, she met and fell in love with Douglas Merlin Cook. On August 23, 1950, Doug and Barbara were married for eternity in the Logan Utah LDS Temple.
The couple made their home on a five acre farm on Cherry Lane in Nampa, ID. It was here where Barbara nurtured and raised five children, where she and Doug tended chickens and horses, planted an apple orchard, and cultivated memories and warmth for grandchildren.
Barbara was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she loved to serve her Heavenly Father and those around her. Barbara and Doug were called to serve as temple workers in the Boise Idaho LDS Temple for seven years. She also served in the Primary and Young Women; in her sixties and seventies, she served as Relief Society President.
Barbara cared deeply for those she met and served with, and she spent her days taking food and baby gifts to neighbors, church members, friends, and family. Her warmth enveloped all who knew her. She volunteered for The Talking Book at the Idaho Commission for Libraries, and recorded audio books for the blind.
Barbara and Doug celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2000. Four months later, Doug passed away from cancer. The grace with which Barbara endured Doug's passing proved an example to her children and grandchildren, and it was with this same grace that she endured her own illness until the very end. Barbara peacefully passed surrounded by her family, on the same day that her great-grandson was born. Family and service marked the anthem of her life.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Merlin Cook; son, Bruce Merlin Cook, granddaughter Melissa Shannon, and her parents, Lewis Hess and Arvilla Moser Hess. She is survived by four children: Debi Rule, Monte (Sheila) Cook, Brenda Shannon, and Becky Cook; 16 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; brothers: Bill (Carlene), Edward (Marilyn), Jerry(Joann) and John (Cindy) Hess.
The family would like to express special thanks to The Cottages in Middleton, especially Martin, and to Align hospice for their loving care of Mom, also Dr Poinier and Dr Rasmussen.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 29 at the Nampa Third Ward LDS Chapel, 18463 Northside Blvd, Nampa, ID. A viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 28 at Zeyer Funeral Chapel, 83 N Midland Blvd, Nampa and at the church from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, prior to the services.
We love and miss you so very much Mom/Grandma. Until we meet again, your love is always with us.
