Gerald "Jerry" N. Atkinson, 83, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was born on September 9, 1929, in Malad, Idaho.
Jerry was the third of four children born to Alfred and Rachel Atkinson. He grew up in Samaria, Idaho and graduated from Malad High School. He served in the Army as a linguist stationed in Germany. He attended Brigham Young University majoring in Business Administration. He married his eternal companion, Carol Robinson, on March 18, 1960 in the Logan L.D.S. Temple.
Jerry was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in many callings throughout his life including serving a mission to Sweden. Jerry and Carol served an LDS Church mission together in Nashville, Tennessee as well as an LDS Church inner-city mission in Salt Lake City, Utah. Church service was paramount to Jerry.
Jerry was an avid gardener and prided himself on growing enough vegetables so he could leave them on all of his neighbor's doorsteps. He was always providing service unto others. Jerry was commonly the "go to" guy to call if anyone ever had a problem with an appliance having worked for Granite Furniture in the Appliance department for over 25 years. Most important to Jerry was his family and he loved them all dearly.
Survived by his children: Sherilyn Houle of Provo, UT; Brent Atkinson (Stacy) of Draper, UT; Darren Atkinson (Patti) of Sandy, UT; nine grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; siblings: Keith Atkinson (Carolyn) of Pocatello, ID; Shirley Muirbrook of Ogden, UT; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Carol, his parents, and a brother.
Family would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home for taking such good care of dad.
