I really feel for you trying to find those "SMITH" ancestors. Now that's a tough one!
I'm not surprised that James & William Thomson lived next to one another. There were many family members who immigrated to Idaho, and they formed a sheep ranch together.
Yes, William Thomson was from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and Kate (Catherine Ramsay) was from Berkenhead, Cheshire, England. These are my uncle's parents and Emily is my Uncle Ramsey's sister. I believe Uncle Ramsey was born in July of 1920.
Please get some sleep because you work too hard.
