Am not sure about the Silver Slipper Saloon being the correct one, unless the Booneville's Hotel Saloon was named the Silver Slipper. For your reference, the following:
1887 July 2 - [The Idaho Avalanche newspaper, Silver City,Owyhee County, Idaho Territory, p. 3, c. 3]:
Advertisement: "Boonville Hotel and Saloon. Notice is hereby given that the undersigned have leased the Boonville Hotel and Saloon and are now prepared to furnish Board and Lodging to the traveling public. The best of Liquors & Cigars constantly kept on hand. Call and see us. A. F. Brunzell & Bro. (June 30, 1887.)"
Should you have a question, please feel free to contact me.
Liz

Hey "D", how are you doing? It looks like you're feeling better. Give Colville a wave for me the next time through. One of these trips, I've GOT to stop by the Examiner office myself and do some lookups.

The 1930 Census shows Robert A. Hodgson, age 16 (1913/1914), in Owyhee County, living in Homedale, as nephew to homeowner Jesse L. Proud and his wife Anna. Also in the home is his brother(?) Joseph W. Hodgson, two cousins(?) also nephew to homeowner, Conrd M and Edward L. Sutton. Jesse's sister, Flora H. Walter is also in the home, but not enough information to identify if she is mother to any of the children.

Based on years of reviewing cases in my old career... This civil case "sounds" like a dissolution case. A divorce case is a civil matter in the court systems and is heard at the Superior Court level (Superior Court in WA State, District in Idaho, varies names in other States) in each county. It is "potentially" possible he had sued a sister/sister-in-law over a family estate or something else; but, I doubt that.

Court records are maintained in each State/County per law in almost all States (at least all the ones that I've had contact). These records are maintained in various manner. Recent cases are usually found on computer records by case name (Robert Hodgson vs Francis L Hodgson; sometimes in dissolution cases the "Petitioner" and "Respondent" names are also on the title). Older cases are maintained on microfilm and also in hardcopy, sometimes both. The Court Clerks of that court also have a "Big Book." This book, usually red in color, about 18" x 24" has a chronological listing of the case titles. Since you don't know the year, they would have to go through this book, listing by listing, if they don't have the entire case listings on computer (which I doubt).

Now, your case: If all you have is his name versus her name and the name of the county, it was "probably" heard in Owyhee County. But, as Petitioner, he could have filed in any county where he lived, against her in any county.

I did run his name and found a Robert A. Hodgson, approximate age 44, previous address Post Falls, in the database system:
http://owyhee.idaho.staterecords.org/?uid=rmfcode&TID=T7...
The one listed in the 1930 Census would have been 44 in 1957/1958. If he married Darlene in 1959, this one is "possible." But, you DON'T want to pay $29.00 for the record.

I would suggest you call the clerk's office and ask them for their procedures for obtaining case information:
http://www.owyheecounty.net/index1.php?court
Some clerk offices do the research, identify how many pages, how much, then notify you to send payment. Some require a payment form first (credit card). Some do not do it by mail. When I've requested records, it's been in person; but I've overheard them on the phone giving instructions, some require a personal visit and review of the case file. Some will photocopy the entire casefile, with all the individual filings. You don't need the entire case file w/all the filings. The original petition and the final declaration would be sufficient. Any child care/support, spousal support, would be identified in the final declaration.

I'd suggest contact with Wayne Hodgeson, or Gordon Caseman. As you wrote, it appears Gordon might have been the son of Francis. One of them, or other family member should know of a previous marriage. But, if for many reasons, you don't wish to do that, the above is your option. His wife, Darlene's, obit is online; however, you already have that also.

Continued health,
Ron Bestrom

Featuring: Owyhee County IDGenWeb Project

Owyhee County was the first county created in 1863 when the first territorial legislature was created. It was named for its river, mountains and mining area by Hawaiian fur trappers in 1819-1820. Although, Hawaii and Owyhee are different in spelling, its the same word. Gold was discovered in 1863 on Jordan Creek. Millions of dollars in gold and silver has been taken from this region until it decipated in the early 1900s. The original county seat was Silver City, Idaho, until 1934, then Murphy, Idaho became the new county seat. Some of the present-day towns and communities are Bruneau, Givens Hot Springs, Grand View, Homedale, Marsing, Murphy, Riddle, Silver City, and Dickshooter.

The Owyhee County IDGenWeb Project (http://owyhee.idgenweb.org/) features cemetery, family history, history and local photos indexes, as well as other Idahoan links to benefit with your research. One of the feature story is about the history of Bruneau -- "... first settlers came to the Bruneau Valley in the 1860s because of the availability of water and the hot springs in the upper part of the valley. The Bruneau Valley provides fertile soil for farming and access to the large rangelands nearby, which provide grazing for livestock. In the 1860s and 1870s, cattle drives brought large herds from California and Texas. Many of the people who came with those herds stayed to establish homes in the area. ..." I don't remember the dates for the building but the owner of course does. They are usually good about sharing the history of their home to tourists. R

Wilford's parents were Samuel Dunn, born 1853, and Martha Stewart, born 1857, both born in Utah. Samuel died in 1943 at Buhl. 1900 census shows other children Mattie, b. 1883, Samuel, b. 1885, Neva, b. 1887, Hazel, b. 1889, Stewart, b. 1891, Jennie, b. 1893, and James, b. 1898, all born in Idaho. Samuel's parents were Thomas Dunn and Harriet Carter. Martha's parents were Thomas Stewart and Charlotte George. Idaho Death Index shows Wilford and Eva's son Fay born in 1916 and died in 1921 at Kimberly. 1920 census shows only Fay and Martha, b. 1918, so Dorothy must have been born after 1920.

Hello Wally,

Yes, I did receive several responses. It turns out "Sinker Creek" is not the correct name for the location of the Utter / Otter Massacre. The Indian attack took place at Castle Butte (east of Sinker Creek), on the south side of the Snake River, about 50 miles from my parents' farm.

Donald H. Shannon in 1993 published a book, "The Utter Disaster on the Oregon Trail," which thoroughly explains the above event. The book includes maps showing exact locations. (The "Sinker Creek" location was named in an earlier book on the subject. Apparently my mother read that book, giving her incorrect information.)

Thanks for your response.

Mary Foster Ludvigsen

Would love to hear about it.

Wally Kimball

I have been reading historical newspapers online. The Hedum & Bishop photographers were together at least from 1895 through December of 1900. In May of 1898 they moved into a new building next to the Owhyee Meat Market. I found one mention of C.C. Hedum opening his photograph gallery again in 1914.
Eellitta

I found a newspaper article stating that Patrick Stromblad was admitted to citizenship Monday July 13, 1896.
Owyhee Avalanche newspaper
Silver City, Owhyee County, Idaho
07-17-1896
Page 1

I know you had the year but I didn't know if you had the date.

In the 06-04-1897 issue of the same newspaper on page 5, Pat Stromblad is employed as an engineer at the Trade Dollar Mill. He is resigning his position and starting for British Columbia. But then in the December 7, 1897 issue it has him listed as a newly installed officer of the Silver City Lodge No. 25 Knights of Phythias - Pat Stromblad, O.G.

On November 9, 1899 he is on the decorating committee for the Knights of Phythias Ball commemorating the 4th anniversary of the Silver City Lodge No. 25 K. of P. at the Masonic Hall.

I don't have any other information. I am not a relative.
Eellitta

A Camera Eye on Idaho by Arthur Hart states, "Charles C. Hedum, a Norwegian, was Silver City's last resident photographer. He was only twenty when he joined Allen K. Bishop, aged twenty-seven, in a brief partnership in the old mining camp, then in its last days of major activity. Hedum carried on the business alone well into the teens of the new century." And, in the chronological list in the back of the book, he said Hedum & Bishop - 1898.

John
