Henry was a 1st cousin of my grandmother. I don't have an obituary, but I do have a newspaper clipping (from a newspaper in Elizabeth City, North Carolina) telling about his death. (He was murdered by a man who wanted exemption from the draft, and Davenport wouldn't do it.)

The newspaper article made no mention of Henry's wife, but did mention that his brother in Elizabeth City, NC had immediately set out for Idaho upon receiving a telegram stating his brother had been shot. (Henry died before his brother reached Idaho.)

The 1940 census lists Henry and Jessie (his 2nd mg, her 1st) and no children. I am under the impression that Henry had no children; at least no one in the family ever has mentioned any.

Did some more work on Jeremiah "John" Wellie (my 2nd great grand uncle) and discovered that he had at least TWO wives before ending up in Idaho, where he had 2 more wives.

First wife was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lingenfelter, who he married in the Indianapolis area in 1876. They got married very young (both 17) and they had two children (Mabel and Clyde). (About Lizzie and those children: Lizzie went on to marry Anthony Kuhry and they lived out their remaining years in San Diego. Her daughter Mabel Tibbetts married Edward Everett Horton and lived in San Diego the rest of her life (no children). Son Clyde Tibbetts married Blanche Smee in Long Beach, CA and was working in January 1912 as a "launch engineer"/tour guide off the coast from Rancho Palos Verdes/Los Angeles harbor, when he was washed away by a large wave/swell and was never found (he did save the tourists though!). He had an infant son by then, Paul Ellis Tibbetts, and an unborn daughter Dortha who was born after his death.)

Anyway, I'm assuming Jeremiah then left Lizzie about 1879, and immediately took up with Flora Dull in Bremer County, Iowa, having a child (Leta) with her within a year of son Clyde's birth. Jeremiah and Flora were part of the Tibbetts family that left for San Diego, California abt 1882/1883. Jeremiah had 4 children with Flora (Leta, Mabel, Carl Oscar, and Glenn Haven, the first three in San Diego) and then left her sometime after she became pregnant with Glenn in 1888. She remained back in Iowa until the 1910's, when she came to live with Glenn in Seattle where she died in 1918.

By 1894 his first wife Lizzie had come to San Diego and sued him for divorce on the ground for failure to provide. So he was either a bigamist or lived "in sin" with Flora.

I think I've figured out 3rd wife/woman Edith M Ellis--she was the 2nd wife/widow of Civil War vet Daniel Dodge Ellis, and after her marriage to Tibbetts was over she went back to being called Edith Ellis (collecting civil war pension). I don't know her maiden name. She died in Marion County, Oregon in 1934, so if anyone wants to get that death cert it might have her maiden name on that.

4th woman/wife was Myrtle Katherine Edwards, divorcee of Edward Raup. Her brother Frank J Edwards was kind of a business bigwig in Shoshone County, Idaho during that time. Not sure how legit that marriage really was, as it is not entirely clear to me that she divorced Edward Raup or was just separated, as she was back with Edward in 1920 (but then married James Bailey in 1921??). I guess Wellie met his match with that lady lol

It seems like it was always a soap opera with this guy, seriously.

I am reposting this from a few years ago. I have been in search of James Finley Bunch who had two children with Mildred that we know of. They lived in Silverton, Burke, and Wallace. They got divorced in Wallace Idaho in 1954. We found out through research that he died in NV in the 1970's, but have yet to find anything out about him. He worked in the mines of the Silver Valley. Someone has to of heard of him. Rumor has it that he spent a lot of time in the bars and getting in trouble. If you knew him or knew of him, or you may think possibly you could help me, I would so much appreciate it. We keep running into brick walls. It is as if he disappeared after the divorce and then showed up dead in NV.

Some went to Idaho and some went to Canada.

A family reunion for all descendants of Elizabeth Russell Archibald is being planned for Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 at the Wellsville, Utah bowery by cousin Brandon Sundeen. He is planning games for the younger children, sharing of family history info for the adults, followed by a memorial service at the Wellsville Cemetery. Food is POT LUCK. Bring your own lunch and all will share what they bring.

If you have any family heirlooms, photos, letters, etc.. pertaining to Elizabeth Russell Archibald or her immediate family, please bring them for viewing.

For more details contact Brandon Sundeen.
Kathie: This may help, but article is pretty graphic.

From The Weekly Spokesman-Review [Spokane, Washington] November 5, 1896:

BLOWN TO ATOMS

Thomas Corlett Met His Death Thorugh Giant Powder

A SICKENING TRAGEDY

Kept the Explosive in his Cabin, and Was Alone When the Accident Happened

Wallace, Idaho, Nov. 2 -- At Burke, in a cabin near the lower end of town, a dynamite explosion occurred yesterday afternoon, resulting in one of the most sickening tragedies that ever happened in the Coeur d'Alenes, Thomas Corlett being blown into small fragments. When men rushed into the cabin, attracted by the sound of the explosion, a horrible sight greeted them. The body and legs of Corlett lay near the window, while blood, brains and small pieces of human flesh were strewn all over the inside of the wrecked building. The skull was blown all to pieces, the scalp torn entirely off the back of the shattered head, being still attached to the body, every bone of which was broken. Both arms were torn off at the shoulders and broken into almost unrecognizable masses of flesh and bones.

Coroner Herrington held an inquest, but the cause of the explosion was a complete mystery, no reason for suicide being known. Death was supposed to have been accidental, as he was known to keep giant powder in the cabin. He evidentally was standing near a window not far from the powder when the explosion occurred, the body being worse mutilated than the building or furniture.

Deceased was aged about 55, unmarried. His remains will be buried at Wallace tomorrow under the auspices of the miners' union.

The same article also appeared in the Idaho Daily Statesman [Boise, Idaho], November 3, 1896, under the headline "BLOWN TO PIECES -- Giant Powder Explosion Kills a Miner in Burke"

Good luck in your search. I hope this was of some help.

Gary Reedy
Boise, Idaho

An image of the marriage certificate is found on the WA Digital Archives:
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Home
It shows Eugene Turner, age 34, born in Illinois, son of Lucian and Mary (Lutz); Bessie McCullough, age 19(1896?), born in "Wash?" they married on 2 Dec 1915. The handwriting on the image is VERY poor, it "appears" her father, John?, was born in Oregon, her mother Sarah?, born in "O"(Oregon? Ohio?). Witness was a Bertha McCullough
--Your tree (below) shows a 1910 census of Whitman county where she is identified as the daughter of Charles and Anna, and was born in Oregon. This person would have been 21/22 at the time of marriage. The 1920 Census does show her birth in Oregon, but shows her as 23 that enumeration date of 2 January. The 1930 shows birth in Oregon and age of 32 on enumeration of April 2. It also shows she was 18 at the time of marriage.

Several family tree identifies a Eugene Turner, born about 1878, died 10 Nov 1948 in Sandpoint, Bonner County, ID, son of Lucien McShan Turner and Mary Elizabeth Lutz.
This one is your tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11091403/person/-528431806?ss...=
It helps to link your tree to your post, then you won't have to explain a lot of information.

This Bessie Turner, born 1897, died 12 Feb 1952, buried 18 Feb 1952:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/id/twinfalls/cemeteries/TFbk3....
I wouldn't waste time looking for her obit, contact the cemetery.
Hi, I think it is him too. I find in Wallace, Shoshone, Idaho starting in the 1900 Fed Census. He seemed to vary his name, from John to Jeremiah to J Wellington. According to my family paper they said he went to Skagway Alaska in 1897 looking for gold. I am not sure if he was deliberately lying about his origins or what--he had a wife and kids before scooting off to Idaho, and it seems to me that he either did not want to be found or wanted to invent a new life. His first wife Flora listed herself as a widow in the 1900 and 1910 Fed Census (she died in 1918), and it doesn't seem there was interaction between Jeremiah/John/Wellington and his kids.

I received the Death Certificate for this Charles Henry Rose. It states that this Charles died of stomach cancer at the age of 56 years. He died in Wallace, Idaho. His residence before being hospitalized at Providence Hospital in Wallace was Enaville, Idaho. He was a cook. He was married to Mrs. Chas. H. Rose. Charles was born in New Jersey, son of Julius Rose, also of New Jersey. Charles died on 12 December 1912. I do not know where he was buried. I do not know his wife's first name. I haven't found him in 1910 census. Hopefully this information will help someone researching this particular Charles Henry Rose.

I'm still searching for my great grandfather, who was last seen in June 1912 in Kansas City, where he was arrested for borrowing $6 from a fellow minister. I haven't been able to find out whose funeral he was supposedly attending in Phillipsburg, Kansas in 1912. There is a ROSE family in Phillipsburg area (Crystal and Agra in Phillips Co., Kansas). The father was Frank and he died in 1892. Frank's wife's name is Mary/Maria/Maria (Dill) Rose but she didn't die until 1931. According to my Charles' marriage certificate, his father is Frank J. Rose and his mother is Myrtle Elkhart. Charles says he was born in "Kingstown", Germany--haven't found that there is such a location in Germany. Hmmm...

I found a newspaper article in the Rockford Register - Gazette dated December 13, 1912. I'm thinking that this newspaper might be from Rockford, Illinois? Anyway, here is the posting: "The police have received a message from Wallace, Idaho, stating that Charles Henry Rose, who it is thought has relatives here, is dead, and asking what disposition shall be made of the body. Up to a late hour no relatives had been located."

I also found an Idaho Death Record for Rose, Charles Henry. Date of death: 12 December 1912 in the city of Wallace, Shoshone Co., Idaho. Date of birth is unknown.

Some of my questions: (1) Did his family every claim the body? (2) Where would he have been buried? (3) Was he living/working in Wallace at the time of his death? (4) What was the cause of his death?

I am researching my great grandfather, Charles Henry Rose. My great grandfather was born 1874 in Germany. He was a minister in Seattle and Portland. In June 1912, my Charles left Portland, Oregon and went to Kansas for the funeral of his mother in Phillipsburg.

My Charles married Frieda Lutthans in East St. Louis, Illinois in Dec 1903. They had 3 children--a son born in Oct 1904 in East St. Louis; a daughter born Dec 1906 in Seattle; another son born in July 1909 in Seattle. Perhaps this Charles Henry Rose who died in Wallace is my great grandfather, returning to Oregon.

This Charles Henry Rose in Wallace died on 12/12/12.
Looking for any information on Bessie B. McCullough Turner. Bessie and her husband, Eugene S. Turner lived in Dalkena, WA and moved to Kellogg, Idaho in 1929. They show up in the 1930 Census and then Eugene moved to Hope, Idaho in the late 1930's to early 1940's however Bessie isn't mentioned. When Eugene died in 1947 he was listed as a widower.
Bessie married Eugene on Dec of 1915, in Spokane, WA.
Any information on Bessie would be appreciated.

When you post, post the link to your family tree. It helps identify what information you already know and provides a basis for research:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/23104331/person/12503341206

The J. Gordon Craig you identified as born May 27, 1916, died Jan 5, 1997, is buried in the Nine Mile Cemetery, Wallace, Shoshone Co, Idaho.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=cr...;
Stone is shared with Janis E. Craig, born 9/20/1919, died Sep 1986.
--If you have any doubt he is the son of William and Ethel, you can obtain his application for his Social Security Number (SS-5). That will identify the names of his parents.

J. Gordon Craig was a General Mill Superintendent for the Hecla Mining Company of Wallace, ID, later promoted to Manager of Mills.

The 1920 Census for Gladeville (not Galdeville), Wise County, VA, enumerated 14 January. Owned/free of mortgage on Oak Street.
William C. Craig, age 57, born in Canada/mother tongue: Irish; to father born in Scotland/mother tongue: Scotch, mother born in Ireland/mother tongue: Irish. Immigration information identified as being "Un"(Unknown). Telegraph Operator/Railroad.
Ethel, wife, age 36, born in Virginia to both parents born in Virginia.
Francis, dau, age 8 11/12 (based on enumeration date was born Jan/Feb 1911).
William C, age 7 3/12 (Sep/Oct 1912)
J. Gordon, age 4 6/12 (June/July 1915)
Janett L, age 2 7/12 (May/June 1917)
-dates of birth are often wrong in the US Census.

The 1930 Census of the Masonic Home, Fairfield Magisterial District, Henrico County, VA, enumerated April 22.
William C. Craig, age 17, born in Virginia, to both parents born in US.
J. Gordon Craig, age 14, born in VA to father and mother born "All unknown but Most US"/both overwritten "US."
--both listed as "Inmate."
--There is NO information that the "home didn't know where the parents were born." There is no indication this information was provided by the home, the children, or the "Magisterial District." The word "inmate" was used per instruction to the census enumerators. It does not matter what connotation the word has today (although children so placed in an institution are inmates or patients if a medical facility). One can not "assume" when reading information in genealogy.

Your tree identifies "J. Gordon Craig" born May 27, 1916 in Virginia. His father was William Craig, born 1864, died before 1930; mother Ethel, died before 1930. However...

William Chesney Craig, Sr, was born in Canada about 1863. Ethel Elizabeth Fraley was born 9 Nov 1883 in Virginia and died Jan 1974 in Richmond, Richmond City, VA (Per the Social Security Death Index).

This tree identifies "some" source material as to this family:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11577545/person/1839336178?ss...=

This is another tree offering some information:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/21626183/person/1668060775?ss...=
But, it shows the same (as you have) William Craig born 4 Oct 1912 in Virginia; but it shows a wrong William Craig in the 1930 Census, living in Asheville, North Carolina with the wrong people. This wrong William was shown as born in North Carolina. So, this tree can not be used as good source material, based on that 1930 Census. I believe this William Craig is NOT the brother of J. Gordon; however, I have no proof. Proof is needed in birth records of this person (AND, J. Gordon) from Virginia. There are FAR to many William C. Craig's to prove/disprove without facts.

For your future genealogy research:

The Social Security Death Index is NOT a database to identify deaths for genealogy purposes. It is actually called the Death master File:
The Death Master File is a database owned by the SSA. The DMF contains the death data of those that had received Social Security Benefits...and
those that never received a dime, but their descendants received the death benefit or dependant benefit. It is JUST a listing of persons having an SSN that died, and their death was reported to the SSA. A person may have received benefits for decades, but not be on the list. A person's data may be wrong. There have been persons still living that were on the list. The SSA sells this DMF via the National Technical Information Service, plus updates; but, at a cost so far prohibitive to us.
Full Explanation: http://www.ntis.gov/products/ssa-dmf.aspx

The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record," and possibly the address where correspondence by the SSA was sent. It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in years past, it was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney; today, a living spouse). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.

The "last benefits" notation that appeared later on the SSDI was NOT necessarily concerning a benefit sent to that person. It was also identified for the location where the final Death Payment was sent. In the past, that might have been sent to a spouse, or ANYONE that had paid the burial costs. In recent years, the law was changed to just be a spouse. Persons are listed on the SSDI that had NEVER received a payment; but a surviving spouse had received the death payment, OR Survivor payments. AND, surviving children under 18 are also recipients of monthly payments as a survivor. The "last benefit" for a deceased might not appear because a survivor (spouse or child) are STILL receiving them. The SSA does NOT go back to add, change, or correct information.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Gordon was living at the Masonic Home in Fairfield, Henrico, Virginia.
J. Gordon Craig, b. VA, 14, inmate, home didn't know where parents were born. In these kind of homes the children are often listed as inmates. I don't think the word had the same connotation as it does today.

Name: James Gordon Craig
Born: 29 June 1915
Branch: U. S. Gordon Craig
Born: 27 May 1916 [note that this date is different than the military DOB]
Died: 5 Jan 1997
Soc. sec. # assigned in Montana before 1951.

You listed his death place as Silverton, Shoshone, Idaho. I found that too on the Social Security Death Index but that "Last Residence" doesn't necessarily mean what it says to the Social Security. They put information in that field for their own purposes.

The State of Idaho doesn't release death records until 50 years after the death and you can't order a copy unless you are a close relative.

Now that I've said all that and we don't have any other info about where he died, there are a couple of choices on where to find his obit.

You can contact the Shoshone News-Press, www.shoshonenewspress.com/
Box 149, 401 Main Street, Kellogg, ID 83837, 783-1107.

You can contact the Wallace Public Library, http://wallace.lili.org./node/69 for a copy. Alfred was a World War I veteran and was moved to the Idaho Veterans Cemetery in Boise in 2009.

His wife was Georgia Benander Slawson, born 17 Apr 1908 and died in Murray on 17 Nov 1944. I would like to find out where she is buried. She is not listed as being buried with Alfred in Boise. Her parents are buried in Spokane, Washington but have not had any luck finding her there either.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for both replies; you've given me some wonderful directions/leads to follow.

I was able to contact the funeral home that handled her final wishes and learned yesterday that her remains were cremated and returned to the family for disbursal -- so she likely never was buried.

I'll continue digging to find out more about her family.

Namasté, “PJ”

PJ, following is an obit i was able to locate on Mary Ann. Check with your local library if they have a system where by you can access the Newsbank America's Obituaries and Death Notices using a library card from them.
The obit I found with this feature follows.
Don

Idaho Spokesman-Review (Coeur d'Alene, ID) - May 7, 2003
Deceased Name: Mary (Schlecht) Ganser -- KELLOGG
Memorial service for Mary Ann (Schlecht) Ganser, 81, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Rita's Roman Catholic Church in Kellogg.
I am looking for help with some research on my 2nd cousin, Mary Ann (nee Schlecht) Ganser who was born 16 December 1921 in Hoven (Township), SD and died 5 May 2003 in Kellogg, ID.

I would specifically like to know where she is buried. In a perfect world, I'd also like to get my hands on a copy of her obituary so that I can verify her military service and occupation history.

My understanding is that her husband (who was born in 1913) is still living in Kellogg, ID and that Mary Ann & Joseph Edward had a total of five children; four sons (Joseph Edward,Jr; John Kevin, James David, & Michael S.) -- plus a daughter, Susan Mary.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Yes. Rose Thorn Stagner is my aunt. And since I last posted my query, I have discovered quite a bit more (corrected) info about Eagle City, ID where my grandfather (sic) Frank Hall Stagner--William Everett Rhett---spent some time. His half-sister was Elizabeth (Betty) Hall who married William Stagner in Toston, MT around 1879, more or less. Betty, widowed around 1895 or so, lived most of her latter years in Spokane, WA. I found her grave in Spokane where she passed in 1930. I commissioned a head stone for her on behalf of our whole family named Stagner. But as you can see, Stagner was never our real name.

What is your interest with Rose Stagner? I am sorry, but I cannot place your name as a relative in the 'fold'. Perhaps your name has changed from one I would recognize through marriage?

Caution...Ancestry.com accepts information from ANY source and is not vetted for corrections. There is a load of false information about Frank Stagner, his wife (my grandmother) Agostina del Rosario, and others. There is a strange thread about my aunt Rose. True, she was a very noted movie star in the Philippines both before and after WW II. But after that, a Google search for her name comes up with some very strange replies. My aunt Rose passed away several years ago in the San Francisco area.

If you wish to contact me directly, and have a real interest and information about the Stagner-Rhett family, you can contact me at:

anjinsan1@gmail.com

Thanks,

Phil Garcia

On the back it says "Wyoming Studios" & "In appreciation of April 1981 Productivity" We know that there was a major disaster at the mine in 1972 and that they sold out or went out of production in 1981 or 82. Does anyone know anything about these buckles? Were they given out yearly? Any info would be appreciated!! Lori
