My G-Grandfather was a "guest" at the Valley County Jail during his trial back in July/August 1919. The Valley County Sheriff at that time was Edward A. Smith. My G-Grandfather, Charles A. Ernst Jr. was on trial for killing a man on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. My G-Grandmother, Frances Cooper Ernst was also a part of the whole thing and actually may have had an affair with the Sherrif during the trial. They had no place to put her in the jail during the trial so she stayed at the Cascade Hotel under "close" supervision of the Sheriff. In the trial it came out that she was seen going out to the lakes, around town, and even to the picture show with the sheriff. If you look up the Cascade paper during the end of July and beginning of August 1919 there was a couple of front page articles about the trial.
