The Pfanschmidt murder & fire occurred September 29, 1912 behind what used to be the Haunted Tavern on Highway 96 between Payson & Quincy.
Mr.Charles Pfanschmidt, wife Matilda, daughter Blanche & a school teacher Miss Emma Kaempen were all murdered one night. The home where the murders took place was burned down the next night.
The police & sheriff charged the Pfanschmidt's son Ray with the murders. The trail was first held in Macomb & then to Princeton, Il. where Ray was found not guilty.
