Hi, August Basse Sr was my GGG Grandfather and I have been looking for his work. His son August Jr, and grandson August L were all in the same trade. Can you tell when the clock was made or have any information, like a label or something that can be researched. Or a picture of it? Regardless of who made it, I think it is remarkable that it still exists today and still works. I'm glad you wrote about the clock.

Linda,
Rhoda and Samuel Stone of Adams County, Illinois, were my great great grandparents. Rhoda's maiden name is a mystery. It does not appear on the Hancock County, IL record of marriage between Mrs. Rhoda Stone and Mr. Enos Thompson on 19 Jan 1843. I don't know anything about her death.
Samuel was the son of James Stone of Hardy County, WV. James was the son of Thomas Stone of Prince William County, Virginia. I am currently investigating the possibility that Samuel Stone and his family settled briefly in the intersecting area of Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio before moving on from Licking County, Ohio to Stone's Prairie in Adams County, IL. Samuel Stone was in Switzerland Co, IN for the 1820 census with children of the correct ages. His children were Enoch b. 1814, Abraham 1818, Mary Ann , Geo Washington b.1831.
My great grandfather, Enoch Peyton Stone, married Emily Burk, b. Indiana or KY. We know little of Emily's father. Their youngest son, Samuel Thomas Stone, was my grandfather. He appears in the 1860 Pontoosuc census at age 5 in the household of E.P.Stone.
This was in The Quincy Daily Herald, Apr 14, 1877, p.3
"AN OLD SETTLER Mr. E. Stone, of this vicinity, says the Carthage Republican, is one of the oldest living settlers of this part of the State. Mr. Stone came with his parents from Indiana to Adams county in 1822. The family settled in what was afterwards called Stone's Prairie, named after Rev. Samuel Stone, the father of our townsman. Their nearest neighbor was ten miles distant. Their only companions for a year or two were the Indians and wolves. There were no roads in any direction, and no signs of civilization between Mr. Stone's cabin and the Mississippi bluffs where, the following year, Quincy was laid out."
Thank you for any information about Rhoda.
Beth
His daughter (Catherine Hickey)resided in Quincy, IL until 1885.

Hannibal papers for those dates are rare as hen's teeth.

An online search of Quincy newspapers (Quincy Public Library) turns up nothing.

I'd be grateful for any help or suggestions.
Years go by and I'm still searching for an obit or church record (anything that might name family members) for Catherine Hickey (nee McNutt) died in Quincy Oct 23rd (or less likely 29th) 1885. She was wife of James S Hickey.

She's buried in Quincy, and all evidence suggests she died there, but there's no county death record, and a word search of online Quincy papers (Quincy Library) turns up nothing. (Scattered hits refering to a death of Mrs Hickey are for the wife of a Thomas Hickey.)

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am looking for the family of Evelyn Ruth Bredeweg. This was my wifes Grandmother. Evelyn spent her life in Indianapolis, Indiana and in Holland and Owosso, Michigan. She was adopted as a baby. I believe her fathers name was Frank. Frank and his wife had another daughter that they kept, their other daughter was a Catholic and I believe she lived in Michigan during some of her life. Not much to go on right now, but we will obtain more info from other family soon. I do know that Evelyn's adopted mother lost her leg in her lifetime and had also adopted a younger boy. Evelyn left her adopted Mom after much abuse when she was 15 and lived in Indianapolis and Michigan raising 8 children.

I notice your last name is Terwelp, are you from Qcy?

Your info will be great to add to my folder on him. August Basse, the son, wasn't a very good man. He married my g-aunt in 1890, then by 1910 was married to another woman (I think). I found all kinds of news clippings about him with all kinds of legal problems. He moved to Colorado and opened a jewelry store, but that didn't last long and he was chased back to Qcy by the Denver police. My aunt remarried after they divorced? Evidently his brother really took over the jewelry bs in Qcy after their dad died.
You can contact me at lois_heath@yahoo.com
Mom said it was Adams Elementary School. It was on Jefferson St. She also said it was an old red brick 2 story building. Mom wanted to know what your Grandmothers name was at that time and if she went to school there and if so what years. Appreciate your help.

For some reason, this caught my eye. I've looked thru the cemetery books for Adams Co. and for Woodland Cem., with no luck. After looking at IRAD, I found that Moritz HEYTE had a connection with Macoupin Co. (where my family is from). Try this link and type in his name; it should give you access to info from Soldier's Home. Moritz had a son in Brighton, Macoupin Co. at the time of his death. Possibly he was returned to Macoupin for burial. The print on the records is tiny, so I couldn't read it very well. Good luck.
http://www.macoupinctygenealogy.org/

My connection to the Sparks family in Adams County is Aquilla Sparks who was my GGrandmother's second husband (my Ggrandfather, Lindorff Butts died in the Civil War). She was Mary Jane Akers Butts, and she and Aquilla were married 7-4-1865 and had three children together - Henry, Laura (who married Charles Schultz) and Thomas. I'm interesting in discovering Aquilla's ancestors, and if anything looks familiar I'd sure appreciate your information.

Hi> My GGrandfather was Samuel C WEBB. HIs Father was William Leeper Webb. David Webb was my GGGrandfather. He Married Ruama Leeper, who had a son named William Leeper. William took the name of Webb but on the Ancestor Chart his name appeared as William Leeper Webb,to insure that generations would know we were related to the Leeper family. My Brother had a DNA test done to see where we came from and the results indicated we were from Ireland and had no trace of Indian. I rather liked the idea that I was part Indian and still claim to be. Lyell

Hi Lois, yes Augusta had a brother, August born 1840 in Germany. I will do some digging for exact sources for you but briefly can tell you some things, my record are not where I am at the moment. August Sr., Wife Lizetta, August Jr., and Augusta came to America June 1855. They first went to Philadelphia (?, I will get the details) then traveled to and settled in Quincy Illinois. In 1856 August Sr. started a jewelry business with brother-in-law Henry Huelsmann. The business lasted many years. First August died, then Henry, then Lizette. Son August, born 1840 took over the business, and after he died it went to I forgot who, will check it out for you. William August Basse Sr. and Lizette, my GGG grandparents are in my father's mother's line. I have a family tree, the Huelsmann family tree that was handed down thru Grandma's family that I got after Grandma died. It traces the family back to 1698 in Germany. Unfortunately it ended when Grandma died as I didn't know about the cousins and second cousins it lists. It is interesting. One man in the family was guard to the Prince of Armenia. And one lady was listed as having no children. I felt sorry for her because the people for generations before and after her had a habit of populating the area. My 7G Grandfather had a wife who gave him 12 children, she died, then he married another lady and she had about that many. My 6G Grandfather came from the 2nd wife, and he did the same thing. Seems strange doesn't it. But that was what they did. So when I read about that lady without children I felt sorry for her, and thought, that's me too. I will get some specific information for you, and get it to you. It's great to hear from you.

Hello,

My great-great-uncle, William Busch, stayed in Quincy when he first came to the U.S. and lived for some time with a relative of his named Jansen, who, prior to the Civil War, had been mayor of Quincy. Do you know who this Jansen may have been? Or how he is connected to William Busch or the Bertram family? Thanks.
Glen Blesi
