I am trying to find any information of where Lorain Creed might be buried in/near Belvidere. She shows up in the 1870 Census living with her brother, Cephas Gardner. She was born about 1808, he was born about 1801. I am wanting to find out if there is any other family buried near to them that might solve some family questions. I know that Cephas Gardner died in 1881. Any help is most appreciated.

ken brodbeck
wichita,ks
shocker76@aol.com

I am looking for the family of Ben Fry/Frey and his wife Mary Bowley. Ben was born July 1861 in Huron County, OH, the son of Jacob and Rosina (Remele) Frey. The surname changed around quite a bit... from Frei to Frey to Fry. To make things more confusing, the relatives who stayed behind in Norwalk, OH kept the spelling Frey while those who left changed it around to Fry. Anyways he was the brother of my ancestor Frances Frey Fritz and woulod love to exchange information and photographs.

My father, Allan Curtis Parker was born in Boone county on 30 June 1908 to Hiran Houghton Parker and Bessie Carne Bowley.
I have a fair listing of my Parker ancestors but I know virtually nothing about my Bowley/Martyn ancestors. My grandmother, Bessie, worked in the County Clerk's office until her death in 1913. Her mother, Anna Marie Elizabeth Martyn died in Belvidere in 1911. Her father, William Bowley and Annna Marie apparently were immigrants from the United Kingdom
I am trying to trace any information about this family and possibly contact members of the family still living in Boone County.
Thank you very much.

Allan Parker

I am looking for information on Abel W. JOHNSON, b. ca. 1787 in Vermont (1850 & 1860 census say NY, but 1870 says VT). Assuming he is the Abel I am looking for, he was born in Pownal, VT, the son of Noel and Mary (WEAVER) JOHNSON, and moved to Cazenovia, Madison Co., N.Y., as a child. He married, 1st, Sarah DEXTER in Cazenovia and had at least one child, Ann Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Ann), who married William Hale INGERSOLL and moved to Janesville, Rock Co., Wisc. Abel probably moved first to Warren, Marion Co., Mo., and then to Belvidere by 1850. Belvidere census records show a wife Philomela, b. ca. 1808 and children Arabella, Gulelma, and William. I would love to be able to prove, or even to have more circumstantial evidence that Abel Weaver JOHNSON of Cazenovia is the same person as Abel W. JOHNSON of Belvidere.

Could someone living around the Irene, Illinois area possibly tell me the name and address of the caretaker for the Flora Cemetery? I wrote to the Boone County Historical Museum but never received an answer back. I also sent a letter in care of the caretaker for the Cemetery and it was returned to me. I am trying to locate the grave of James William Gouchenour who died 21st October 1909 and was buried in the Flora Cemetery. There is evidently no stone, as he is not listed in the Cemetery book. I would like to visit this cemetery this summer and would like (if possible)to find out ahead of time where the location of the grave is. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Rudolph Families and Farm on Rudolph Road

I'm looking for family histories pertaining to the Rudolph Family and their ancestors. They owned a farm on Rudolph Road, which was probably in Spring Township or Belvidere and has since been sold outside the family. Julius Rudolph (1836-1924) was born to Prussian immigrants George Rudolph (1811-1864) and Eva Eichler (1814-1881). He married Sophia Naker (1850-1918), daughter of Martin Naker (1820-1899) and Catherine Burkett (1826-1867). Julius and Sophia Rudolph had at least 16 children. Their daughter Lillian May Rudolph (1876-1962) married Berdell Roy Lucas (1874-1957). The Lucases had one daughter, Bernita Belle Lucas Wiles (1903-1997), who was my great-grandmother. The Lucases moved to Saint Augustine, FL in the 1920's, but many of the Rudolphs remained in the Boone County area. Many are buried in a cemetery in Genoa, Dekalb County, IL. I have the names of the Rudolph children, several grandchildren, and some photos.

1881 murder by poison of Mason Daniel Stott by wife and Dr. Cream in Garden Prairie..

I would like to know if anyone can forward me newspaper clippings or the obit. of my GGGGrandfather Daniel Stott a Mason who was murdered by his wife and Dr. Cream (Who some think may be Jack the Ripper). He died 12 Jun 1881, so the obit. would probably be just after that. I would appreciate any news articles regarding the death, investigaiton and subsequent trial. I have the coroner's inquest stuff and some stuff from a magazine in the 60's, but no articles from the time period. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would be more than happy to reimburse for any copies, shipping etc.

Additionally, I would like to know if anyone has any contact with the Mason lodge there in Belvidere and if they have any records of him. I have had some luck with other lodges in IL, and hope for the best.

Jeff
Loftin2668@aol.com

Has anyone ever had any luck getting copies of sacramental records, from St. James Church, in Belvidere?

I tried maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I called and the woman asked said to "just send them a letter". I did, and I enclosed a check to cover expenses. I waited impatiently for 3 or 4 months, and then gave up. They never cashed the check.

A couple years later. I sent another letter and another check, and again I heard nothing.

My Great Grandparents James and Margaret (MURPHY) CURTIS, are buried at St. James Cemetary, so I assume that they were members of the Church.

If anyone has found the secret to getting records, will you please share?

Hannah Norton (1775-1864) is listed as "W/O Samuel Norton". This is in ERROR. Hannah Norton (1775-1864) was the mother-in-law of Samuel H. Norton. Hannah's husband was Henry Norton who died in Maine. They are the parents of Samuel H. Norton's 1st wife.

Hannah Gower Norton was the first wife of Samuel H. Norton, and she also died in New Portland, Maine. (Samuel H. Norton and his 1st wife are my Great-Great-Grandparents.)

Hannah Norton (1775-1864 was the mother of Hannah Gower Norton and the W/O Henry Norton of Maine.)

Samuel H. Norton, after his wife's death in Maine, moved his three sons and mother-in-law to Boone County, Illinois around 1850. Samuel's brother-in-law, Robert G. Norton (Robert Gower Norton) and his wife Candace Case Norton were already living in Boone County, Illinois--Flora twp at that time, and later in Belvidere. Samuel H. Norton's son, Samuel Jr., was killed in the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. Samuel Jr. was "buried where he fell" according to Civil War records. So he was buried in Tennessee.

Would anyone be willing to look up an obituary for me?

The USGenArchive page listed the following information as two obituaries indexed at the Ida Public Library.

Kate Dillord DeWane
Died Oct. 28, 1908
Buried at St. James Cemetery, Belvidere

Mrs. John DeWane
Died Nov. 2, 1905
Buried at Rockford

These women are some of the earliest family members I can find in census records and I am hoping that their obituaries might lend some clues to help me figure out more about my family. Thank you!

Ethel Mae Welch, b. 5 Sept. 1892 in Belvidere, Boone County, was dau. of Charles Welch, b. 14 Feb. 1865, Nottinghamshire, England -- died 22 July 1955, Belvidere and of Sara Jane Brown, b. 14 Jan. 1872, Caledonia Twnsp. -- d. 30 June 1952, Belvidere.
Sara Jane's parents were William Brown. b. ca. 1823 in England and Sarah Jane, b. ca. 1837 in England. They were married 25 Jan. 1868 in Boone County; bride's name given as Mrs. Sarah Jane Gilson. I've been told that her maiden name was Hart. Two Gilson girls, Ida and Nellie, were listed with them in the 1870 census. Other children in the family were Maria/Marya, Rachel (m. Fralich?), Harriet (m. Will Wood?), John, Ann, Lizzie. It appears that this was also a 2nd marriage for William.
The Gilson girls apparently married in Boone County to Birkatt(??) and Pease.
Looking for any info on any of these people. I have further material from England on Charles Welch and his family.

Anne Gometz agometz@gridusa.net
While visiting relatives in Sweden this summer, I found letters written on behalf of Frieda Johnson Smith, who was known in Sweden as Rut Jonsson. In April 1933, she was living at 913 Warren Ave. in Belvidere, IL. She was an heir of Alfrid Ferdinand Jonsson, and apparently was related to Emil Jonsson, who lived in Bjorkeholm, Morlunda, Sweden. Emil Jonsson married a relative of mine, and I am trying to establish who Frieda/Rut was and whether we are related.

Looking for a Thompson couple who came from Morristown, NY in 1846 and settled in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois.

This childless Thompson couple (No names given) adopted and took in my g, great grandfather George Emerson five years after his father (Mathew Emerson) died in New York. George was 12 years old at the time the Thompson couple took him to Belvidere, IL in 1846.

George's mother's name was Sarah (Wiles) Emerson.
After her husband Mathew Emerson died Sarah could not care for all of her six children and this Thompson family graciously offered to care for George. I am not sure if they legally adopted George or not.

It is written in our Emerson family information that this Thompson family living in Belvidere, Illinois raised large flocks of turkeys and George would drive the large flocks of turkeys on foot and ox carts filled with feed to the Chicago market.

George eventually left the Thompson's to live with his Emerson family. The Thompson's gave George a beautiful horse as a gift which he rode home to Rice County, Minnesota.

It is noted that George Emerson was well read and very well informed about medicine. He often gathered herbs for his medicines. He was a beautiful penman and kept leather diaries for several years. He was a fine carpenter and a good market gardener. He never drank or smoked and seldom swore.
May these be qualities that the Thompson family instilled into young George?

George Emerson married Margeret Finlayson February 18, 1858 in New Richland, Minnesota.
Margeret Finlayson born to James Finlayson and Sarah (Wells) Finlayson.
The Finlayson family also moved to Belvidere, Illinois in 1851 or 1852. I am thinking that George may have met Margeret Finlayson in Belvidere, IL.

If any of this information sounds familiar to your Thompson family information could you please contact me?

Sincerely,

Sandy (Emerson) Tuzinski
2008 Dixon Drive
Bloomington, MN 55431
pstuz@prodigy.net

The Porter Family of Garden Prarie

I am e-mailing from England.
A letter from a J. M. Porter of Garden Prarie, dated 12th March 1863, was found amongst my late father-in-laws possessions. There seems to be no connection between his family, the Vaughans, and either the sender or recipient of the letter. Therefore any help in solving the American end of the mystery would be greatly appreciated.

The letter is written on one large sheet of paper, first across the page then up and down it. It is in rather a delicate condition and there is no envelope with it. It seems to be to a lady called Emma, probably living in or around Hetheringsett in Suffolk, England. It mentions family members in England and Garden Prarie, in particular the Porter brothers?, Edwin, Robert, Horace and John. It also mentions a Harry Boreham who has 'given up blacksmithing and opened a drinking saloon, poor business for him'.

The letter is full of local news, the hardships caused by the Civil War and the opportunities in California, although the writer fears that for those members of her family going there 'the indians will be troublesome this summer'.

Any information about the Porters or the English family to whom it was written would be appreciated. I can send a transcription of the letter to interested parties.

Thank you for any information you can provide

Peter Morritt.

Belvidere's Ida Library A Great Resource

Just wanted to second Jim Thomas's recommendation to many of us: that we make use of the Ida Library. Last month I had the privilege of going there, and he's right. The people there are very helpful, and there is a wealth of material in that little area. I came away with copies of newspaper clippings, marriage information, death certificates, cemetery transcriptions, etc. I'd never visited that area before, but I loved it. As an added bonus, I even located the house my ancestors lived in over a century ago--in nearby Beloit, and it looked almost the same as it did in the photo my family has had on their wall in California for all these years!
