Black Oak Cemetery visit

Subject: Black Oak Cemetery between Arenzville and Beardstown

Louisa M Hobrock Mathews/Matthews is supposed to be buried in this cemetery.

Many of her Hobrock family members are reportedly buried there including her parents Herman Heinrich Hobrock and Anna Thron Hobrock.

Louisa's stone may have the name Hobrock on it, or her married Mathews or Matthews name.

She was born in 1874 in Cass Co., IL and married 1890 in Schuyler county. Her death year would have been 1890 or later.

Am specifically seeking Louisa's date of death.

If anyone has information that she had children I would be interested in that, and as well as any other info.

If someone is going to Black Oak Cemetery and can look for her stone and send me information as to what is written on it I would be most appreciative. Thank you in advance.

Lyra

Obit, date of death for Margaret E. Mathews/Matthews

Trying to locate obit and/or date of death for my gr grandmother Margaret Elisabeth (Kehl) Mathews/Matthews who died in 1912 at about 36 years of age. She is buried at the Ashland Cemetery, Ashland, Cass Co., IL.
Headstone gives only years of birth and death, no specific dates.
Have not located her on 1910 census, but did locate her husband George M. Mathews/Matthews at the Cherokee State Hospital in Cherokee Co., Iowa in 1910.
In the 1900 census George & Margaret were in Greene Co., IL.
I do not know the date Margaret died, nor the location. She may have been in Cass, Morgan, or Greene counties at the time of her death since she had relatives in those counties.
Her family had been in Nortonville(or Murrayville)area, Morgan Co., IL since mid 1850's.
Have one old photo of her grave right after burial. There were no leaves on the trees so I am guessing it was January, February, March, October, November, or December of 1912.
George died March 3, 1914 and the little notice from the White Hall, Greene Co., paper only mentions she died before him.
I'd so much appreciate any info anyone may have on Margaret Mathews/Matthews.
Thanks in advance!
Lynn

Marshall and Carpenter Families

I am doing family research on the Marshall families who came to the Cass Co., Mason Co., Menard Co. and Sangamon Valley area around 1830. William Marshall and several of his children (George, John, Elisha, Jordan, David, James) along with some Carpenter family members moved to this area from the Jackson Co. and Overton Co., TN area. William Marshall is said to have died in Cass Co. at a great age (possibly in 1856 or 1857). Abner Carpenter is buried in the Snicarte Cemetery and his wife, Mary Marshall Carpenter is buried in the Finch Cemetery, and John Marshall is buried in the Bethel Cemetery. If you have any information on these families or are connected to them please contact me because I would like to exchange information.
Jan

My gggrandfather was John S. "Jack" Smith, probably born in Tenn. He married Susan Fowler (also born in Tenn) in Cass County in 1838, who bore him John, Elisha, George, and Averilla (sp?). His will mentions these children. Also, he names son Andrew, and "dau. of Mary", and a "Nancy". I believe he was also married to Mary Moss (b. Tenn), and possibly a Dulcenda (sp?). Dulcenda is mentioned as "concort" in his bio. He could have lived plural or polygamist "marriages", each woman in her own house. John Angel, married Elizabeth, daughter of Mary Moss, and publicly had other wives. Both Johns moved their families to Illinois. Can anyone help me unravel this man's family?

On Nov. 25, 1848 a Charles WELLS purchased 40 acres of Federal land in Chandlerville Township (19N), Cass Co. It was granted Feb. 1, 1850.

According to my search on Heritage Quest, no Charles appears on the 1850 or 1860 census for Cass Co.

I'm very puzzled as to why he wouldn't appear to be living on land that he purchased.

My gr grandfather was a Charles W. WELLS, b. 1830-32 OH or VA. His son, my grandfather, Edwin Finley WELLS, was born in Cass Co., IL, March 1858. In 1856 Edwin's sister, Dema, was born in MN. This family appears on the 1860 MO, Dunklin Co., Union District census which was enumerated June 15, 1860. This census states that my gr grandfather was a carriage maker.

Can anyone help me figure out what happened to the Charles who purchased the Federal land? Any help and suggestions are gratefully appreciated.

Peggy Riggs Kopp

Hi Barb,
I wrote to you in June 2005 and was not able to help you. I was wondering if you ever found more on your Grandfather and if you were able to prove he was the same Herman Barrett that was a brother to my great grandfather, James Marrion. I would love to know as I have thought of you several times not being able to find much info. Darlene

Ernest Paul Widmayer 1849-1915

Ernest Paul Widmayer was born in Markgroningen, Wurttemberg, the son of Jacob Christoph Widmaier (1811-1854) and Friederike Louise Baitinger (1812-1890). In early 1854 the Jacob Widmaier family emigrated to America arriving in New York on May 11. The family moved on the Buffalo (Niagra) NY where in July 1854 Jacob died. By 1862 the family was located in Hampshire Twp, Kane, Illinois. Ernest served in the Civil War and after went to Jacksonville, Morgan, Il to join his brother, Charles, there in the meat business. By 1872 Ernest and brother, Robert, had started a fresh meat business in Virginia, Cass, Il. That year Ernest married Mary Matilda Ream of Hampshire, a daughter of Levi Ream and Magdelena Schumacher. Ernest and "Til" were the parents of eight, the youngest being Walter H. Widmayer (1889-1954) who married Pearl McDonald, daughter of Henry & Nettie (White) McDonald. The Markgroeningen roots of the Widmayer family include ancestors who married there in 1561. Additional information about this Widmayer family is found in the Summer 1984 issue (Vol. XVI, No. 2) of the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly. Welcome contact from others searching these Widmayer families.

Hi Darlene,

Was getting absolutly no where trying to connect myHerman with your family....then recently World War 1 Draft Registration cards became available on line and lo and behold there was my Herman, born 07 Mar. 1883 in Joliet Il. And the reason I know this is the right guy is cause it lists next of kin. He lists Jeannet Barrett, daughter. Thats my Mom!!!!! Now I still have no census records, marriage or deaths but what a surprise. Says he is a metal polisher with br. eyes and br. hair. All this is more than I have know in many years. Guess this eliminates your family..oh well we tried. Best regards, Barb

Identification of EVANS/MILLER family photos from 1800s

Hello,
I am trying to identify the people of these family photos that were from this area (Cass, Morgan, Schuyler, & ? counties) at one time. The surname of these photos are EVANS or MILLER most likely. Caitlin & Williams (Photographers), Jacksonville, IL was stamped on the back of some of these. Haven't been able to find information out about the photographers either.

The pictures seem to vary in years and approximately taken during the 1850s-1880s. If you have a guess as to what years they may have been taken, I welcome your input.

If you believe that you could be related by looking at these photos, please contact me to compare notes.

Please go to the following to view the photographs:
http://gballard.com/lW05-00005-01/default.htm

I am looking for info on this Ossian. LDS says his parents were a Joseph and Elizabeth Ross. If this is true then I believe that this Joseph may be the son of Joseph Ross and Abigail Lee. If this is true then that would make the Ossian Ross who married Mary Winans my Ossian's uncle. The Illinois marriage index has my Ossian M Ross (b.abt 1826 Illinois) and Amanda Lee (b.abt 1839 Illinois) marrying 3 Aug. 1854 cass Co Illinois. They are in the Cass Co Census of 1860 with the following children: Mary 12, Frances 11, Catherine 9, Harriet 8, John 7, Ruth 6, and Bell 2. Also with this family is Charles Lee 18 brother of amanda and Matilda Lee her mom. By 1870 this family has moved to Atchison Co Missouri. Also there is a Joseph Ross who marries an Elisabeth Sidwell in 1823 in Alexander Co Illinois. Do not know if there is any connection. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Looking for a Charles Keener, supposedly lived/died in Beardstown around the first world war, born in the 1860's in Scott Co., IL. He had married a Shaw, who was from that area, I believe. Last time I checked, some years ago, there was no access to either cemetery records or death records. Have the death records ever been made available, or the cemetery records, perhaps? The folks at the courthouse were pretty hardheaded about anyone using their material! Any help appreciated.

Dearing

I am looking for information on Benjamin Harrison Dearing (b. 1822) whose parents were John Dearing and Margery McRoberts. He married Charity Wright before 1849. There children included James (1849), John T. (1851), Sarah (1853), George (1855), Robert Franklin (1858), Mary Jane (1860), Malissy (1862), Lydia (1865), Minnie (1867), Charles (1868), Edward (1873). After Charity died, he married Elizabeth Lewis and had Polly (1877), Harry (1877), and Emma (1880). He died in 1881 and is buried in the Little Shepard Cemetery. I am related through Robert Franklin who married Mary Bridget Mahoney in 1887. One of their children was Katherine Angela Dearing who married Albert Otto Caszewski in 1907. They had a son Donald Robert who was born in 1910. I am his daughter.
Eads Family

Charnock Eads (1815-1880) & Sarah Taylor (c1820-1898) were married 1838 in Morgan Co, Il. They raised a family of eleven children. In 1850 the family is listed in the federal census for Morgan County. In 1856 they are in Wapello Co, Iowa and in 1859/60 they are located in Douglass County, Kansas. Charnock died in Cass Co and is apparently buried in Walnut Ridge Cemtery. Sarah Taylor Eads died 1898 in Jacksonville and is buried in the Jacksonville City Cemetery. Amongst the children is Lucy Jane Eads (1852-1905) who married 1869 Joseph Lafon White. Joseph and Lucy lived in Cass County and raised their children including Nettie who in 1890 married Henry McDonald, a long time businessman in Virginia. Carol Widmayer Otto is the great grandaughter of Henry and Nettie. We have researched the Eads family back into Scott Co, Ky; Washington Co, Md and Kent Co, Md. We welcome contact with others searching these families.

Looking for information about wife and family of Andrew Reuschlein - Buried in Arenzville cemetery as Antreas Reuschlein. His son Frederick or grandson Fred changed the spelling to Reischlein. Andrew and at least 2 sons and 1 daughter moved to Illinois after his wife Margaret passed away in 1851 in Cumberland Maryland. Suspect his wife's maiden name was Fisher. I don't know much about his other son John, other than he was born around 1832 in Bayern Germany and married a Catherine (Nunz) on June 15th, 1852.

I have a picture of my ggrandmother Sadona Gertrude Houston, b 1868, Cass County, IL with a group of young men and women. I have been told she attended college, so I am assuming these young people were a college class. Their names are on the back ,but are very faint. I can see different towns listed by their names. My question is, what instututions of higher learning existed around 1885 near Cass County, IL?

Her father, Otis Petty, who worked for CIPS, and Frank were friends.
She would like to make a trip to Beardstown in the next month or two and try to connect with Frank or anyone who might know her or remember her family. Her parents were Margaret and Otis Petty.
When e-mailing me back please put her name in the message box so I don't delete it. If I don't know the address or name I don't open the mail. Too many viruses.
Thank you so much. This will mean so much to my mother.
Victoria Conley
