I saw your Grandpa a few times when I was a little kid, but don't really remember much about him because I can't get a picture of him in my mind. I saw Cecil's obituary when it was in the newspaper and was very surprised that he lived to 100 years-AMAZING to say the least. My Dad knew all of Fred's kids and we use to go to Clinton and check on Mary, Fred's widow. Do you know if your Grandpa had a brother who lived in Gibson City? I've been trying to find info on him and can't find anything about his death or burial. I am researching the entire Henson family.

Can someone who is connected to the publication of this book please reply and let me know if the information that I submitted on the Barnetts and Kenneys will be included in the book? It was a large manila envelope sent by certified mail and was signed for.
Also, I would like the phone number of someone on the committee who may help me if no one replies.
My emails to the committee were unanswered.

The Barnetts and Kenneys were very early pioneers, having a township named after the Barnetts, and a village named Kenney, so it would be a shame if they are not included in the history of the County.

Many thanks for any help with this.

I checked only the DeWitt Co. site.

There is a marriage for John W. Montgomery and a Mary A. Mason 8/7/1865.
Thanks to the previous posting, giving George's death date, here is his obituary:

Clinton Register
DeWitt County, Illinois
Friday, December 7, 1906

News was received here Monday of the death of Geo. D. Finch of Jacksonville on Monday, aged 77. He was born in Pittsfield, New York; was united in marriage to Jane Montgomery, in Long Point about 1866. Mr. Finch came to Illinois early in life. His wife died in 1880, while Mr. Finch was left with seven children to battle life’s journey. He enlisted in the 33rd Illinois Vol. Inft. and served through the war. After being discharged, he returned to Farmer City and resided until last December when he went to Clinton to live with his daughter. From there he was taken to Jacksonville. He is survived by seven children, L. G., of Springfield, Mo.; A. M., of Algonquin, Ia.; E. L., of Springfield, Ill.; Mrs. Edward Summers, of Wapella, Ill.; Mrs. D. W. Harrold, of Clinton; Bert, of Farmer City; Mrs. Sigenstrick, of Jacksonville. The funeral services took place from the M. E. church at Farmer City of which he was a life-long member. Interment in cemetery near that city.
………………..

I looked up George and Sarah in the 1880 census. Sarah was alive on June 22, 1880, when the census was taken, so I started checking the newspaper after that date. I knew with my luck that she probably died in December, and, sure enough, she did. One of the babies must have died around the same time. I checked for several weeks afterward, but there were no columns containing the Farmer City news, so I didn’t find anything.

Clinton Public
DeWitt County, Illinois
Friday, December 10, 1880

Farmer City.

Mrs. George Finch divided the honors equally and presented her husband with a boy and girl. The twins weighed seven and a half pounds each.
………………..

Clinton Public
DeWitt County, Illinois
Friday, January 7, 1881

Farmer City.

On Sunday morning, December 26, Mrs. Jennie Finch, wife of George Finch, departed this life after a short sickness, leaving eight little children, five of whom have the whooping cough, and the two least are twins but a few weeks old. Mr. Finch is an industrious man, but with such a large family it was difficult to get much ahead. This case calls for all the sympathy and benevolence of the good people of Farmer City.

Downen / Downing Family

I am trying to track down the Downing families that I believe to be descended from Josiah/Joseph Downing who I think is the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson. Is anyone out there connected to this branch of the family?
Here is what I think I have pieced together so far...

I found a listing of the possible children of Josiah/Joseph Downing here -
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/D/DownenJosiahJoseph-Rebecca...

I believe I am related to this family through Elizabeth J. Downen who married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt County, IL in 1846. (I would like to verify that Elizabeth J. is actually the daughter of Josiah and Rebecca!)

The website above mentions that the wife of Josiah Downing might have been Rebecca Jane Troxel. But that the marriage record in Christian Co., KY, says Rebecca Mann. Anyone know any more about this possible Troxel connection?

It seems that Job Downen (the son of William Downen and Margaret Robinson) along with his brother Josiah and father William moved to DeWitt County, Ill.

Job Downen married Alabama Williams in 1835 in Macon County, IL. He died in 1841 and Alabama later married Frederick Troxel (the father of William Ford Troxel).
Now I believe that William Downen also moved to IL and remarried to Ludica (Spencer)French. He was living in DeWitt County, IL in 1850.

Josiah Downing (48) was living in DeWitt county in 1850 with his family.
wife Rebecca, 45
Josiah 16
Margaret 14
Alfred C. 11
Job 8
Henry C. 6
Josephine 3
All of the children born in IL.

Mary Ann (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married Joseph Spencer in 1849 in DeWitt county, IL. This Joseph Spencer is also related to the Troxel family. Although I am not sure how he and Ludica are related.

As I mentioned earlier, Elizabeth Downen (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) married William Ford Troxel in DeWitt county in 1846.

There is a marriage record for Mariah Downing (the daughter of Josiah Downing?) in Macon Co., IL in 1877 to Cyrus Hollinger. Could this have been her second marriage?

The family of Josiah/Joseph Downing then moved to Linn county Kansas, Mound city Twp. where they were in 1860.
Josid Downing, 58
Rebecca, 54
Alfred, 22
Job, 20
Josephine, 12
also living next door
J. Downing Jr. 25
Phebe, 26 - b. NY
Martha, 1 - b. Kansas

I have not been able to locate any of these family members in 1870 census.

In 1880 census, some are living in Saline County, Miami Twp., Missouri.
Job Downing, 38
wife Amanda, 31
Loretta, 12
Frank, 9
George, 7
Stella, 5
Nora, 11/12,
all the children born born in MO
living next door is Alfred Downing, 41

Also living in Saline County, Miami Twp. MO
Josiah Downing, 44,
wife Phebe, 43
Henry, 19
Annie, 14
John, 12
Mary, 10
Josiah, 7
all the children born in IL.

I have not been able to track these families any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated on trying to figure out this Downen / Downing puzzle. I would like to verify the children of Josiah and Rebecca and try to figure out where they ended up. Also if anyone has information on the family of William and Margaret Robinson, that might be helpful too. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Do you know how Job Downen and Elizbeth J. Downen are related? Elizabeth J. Downen married William Ford Troxel - she was born 14 Jul 1827 in IL. I have very little on the Downen family. William Ford Troxel is the son of Frederick Troxel Jr. and Jane Cox. The 2nd wife of Frederick was Alabama Williams who had previously married Job Downen.

Another note of interest, Joseph Spencer (who married Mary Ann Downen) is the son of Elizabeth Troxel and Samuel S. Spencer. Another Troxel - Downen connection.

How is this Mary Ann Downen related to Job or Elizabeth J.?

I saw Bernard listed with Reno's parents in the 1930 census...but didn't know if he belonged to Reno or Reno's brother, who I believe was living there as well. That clears up another mystery!

It's interesting to see that Reno had moved on to Chicago and Bessie remarried and moved to Decatur. Wonder what happened in that marriage??

Thanks,
Kaylynn
Nebraska

Thanks for responding! It looks like the marriage of Bessie and Reno fell apart. Perhaps that's why he's living with his parents in the 1930 census.

Is there a way you could post a copy of Frank's obituary? That would be nice to see.

I've never seen a photo of Viola North, my g-grandmother's sister, but I do have a photo of Bessie and her brother Russell. It was taken about 1907, give or take a year. Do you have any additional information on Russell? I know he married a woman named Lena, but that's it for him.

Do you know if Frank had any children by his first wife, Grace Mable Brown? I don't have any information on her, other than what little information my grandmother had.

I know Frank's third wife was Sarah (Luscaleet??), and I have a photo of their tombstones, but not much on the children of Frank and Sarah.

Again, thank's for the information on Bessie. I'll have to do some searching in Decatur and see what I can find.

Kaylynn
Nebraska

My lines in DeWitt Co., IL

Cantrall
Gano
Harper
North
Provin

From what I've seen, Bessie (dau. of Viola NORTH & Frank HENSON,) married Reno DAY sometime before 1916. At least one child was born to them, Merle, May 26, 1916. I found Reno in the 1930 DeWitt County census, living with his parents, but there is no sign of Bessie. He's listed as being married. Anyone have an idea what happened to Bessie?

Viola was a sister to my g-grandmother, Fanny Jane NORTH HARPER. They were daughters of John Preston NORTH and Sarah Melinda PROVIN.

Kaylynn
Nebraska

Hi Patty,

I would love to have a copy of the record that you have. Do you have a scanner and can you send it? I think the last time you replied you thought he was in Leroy IL cemetery. I am going to take a trip soon to that area. I am trying to get my stuff ready so I know what to look for. I usually just go and kinda amble around. The library in LeRoy is very good. I will look again through their files. I found a picture of the Brock's there in a family file. I also see there is a Walden file. I don't think I looked at it last time I was there. I will go look through it. I can also visit anything you need. I am just waiting for a little break in the weather here.

Rucker Chapel has a service once a year on Memorial Day weekend. There is a lovely lady who keeps everything going who was married to a Brittin. The place is kept up remarkably. Maybe you could try to attend this year and we could get together.

By the way, one of the members of the DeWitt Genealogy society happens to be a grave wicker? Don't know if that is the right term or not. He was at last years Rucker Chapel service, as he has ties there as well. Will wait to hear from you. Vauna

I also have a Britton in my family tree, but she was married to James Garner II and was born in Bourban County, KY in 1767, with the spelling of Britton.
You mentioned you have a list of burials at Rucker Chapel. I am extremely interested in this information if you are willing to share. I have Gardner family there, and have tried to find for certain just how many. I know Joseph Gardner is there. His son, Charles, my GGGrandfather is supposed to be there according to a Obit. I have. He died in East St. Louis, IL, in May, 1925, and his remains were shipped to "Farmer City". Bonnie Walden, who volunteers from the Clinton Library, has also tried to help with this. I have been to Rucker Chapel once, and noted there is a stone for an E. S. Gardner, (should be E. T. Gardner), with wife Melvina Walters engraved as well. If there is any possibility that you would be willing to send a list or copy of the Gardner burials at Rucker Chapel, I would be so very appreciative of the help. There were quite a few Gardner's in the Wilson area as best I can find, Parker; Joseph M.; Thomas; John Wesley; Edward T.; and Charles. Thank you for any help you would be able to provide if you are willing.
shangran
John was married to Elizabeth Cornelious on Dec 30 1801 in Madison, VA.
There were Lillards and Garriotts living in that area during that time. John's middle name is Lillard so I'm guessing it might be his mothers maiden name or his father's mother's maiden name. He is buried where the tombstone is for Mary Elizabeth Brittin - the single tombstone - not the one that has William E. Brittin's name on it with her name. I have an old record from a deceased relative who recorded names and lot numbers in Rucker Chapel and the deceased relative has in lot 51 - G.P.Brittin. William E. and Mary E. Brittin are on Lot 52. M.E. Brttin is on Lot 49. I have always said that he was buried near that one tree (which is probably not there anymore) near William E. and Mary E. Brittin are and when I finally looked at these papers and saw G.P. Brittin, I knew how I knew he was buried there; I was told many, many times that George Perry was buried in that grave. I was told even as an adult by my parents and by my Great Aunt Hazel Brittin Boling that when Mary died, a tombstone was made by mistake with only her name on the stone. There was already a space on William E.'s stone for Mary's name to be engraved. The new stone had already been ordered, made and paid for so instead of destroying that stone, it was put on George Perry's grave because there was no stone there. Then, Mary's name was engraved on the stone that she shares with William E. That is the reason that Mary Elizabeth Peavler Brittin's name appears on two stones. I was at Rucker Chapel with my Mom and my Great Aunt Hazel Boling around 1980 and was told again to remember that George Perry is buried there. I asked again why the stone had my great grandmother's name on it and they again repeated it to me - that another stone was made by mistake for Mary and since there was no stone for George Perry, that stone was put there so people would know that someone was in that grave. Had I not really looked at these old papers that I have, I don't know when I would have remembered this. I have no proof other than what is on paper and what I know to be true that my parents and Great Aunt Hazel told me, but I am positive if someone were to go to Rucker Chapel with a grave finder, there would be a grave there. I do not remember for sure if any of George Perry's wives are there or not, but I believe Rebecca might be. Only a grave finder would be able to tell if there are two graves there, I guess. I know this sounds far-fetched, but it is 100% true as it was told to me. I am sure of it. There is only one family member left that might know and I will try to contact him to find out if he can verify this along with me. I am not holding out a lot of hope that he will be able to verify it, though, as he is the youngest one of the family still living.

Looking for Death or Obit information for Clara Williams, age about 19, who was the daughter of Joseph Preston Williams and Olieva Angeline (Annie) White Williams. The family lived in DeWitt County at the time of the 1920 Census, although Ancestry lists the fathers name as Jonathon. Clara is not listed with the children in that Census. I don't believe she was ever married.

I have two obits and will post both of them and answer other questions in another post. This obit does not have a date or the newspaper name on it. However, from looking at it, it appears to possibly be from The Pantagraph, Bloomington, McLean Co., IL.

Frank E. Henson
LE ROY - (PNS) - Frank E. Henson, 87, a retired carpenter and father of Mayor Charles H. Henson, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bloomington at 12:45 a.m. Saturday. He had been a patient one week and had been in failing health several years.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Stensel Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Badger will officiate, and burial will be in Gilmore Cemetery.
Visitation will begin Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 25, 1873, in DeWitt County, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Henson. He married Sarah Ellen Luscalett in January, 1903, at Clinton. She died in 1959.
Surviving are three sons, Russell E., Homewood; Charles H. and Frank O., LeRoy; two daughters, Mrs. Bessie Booker, Decatur; Mrs. Lucille Anderson, LeRoy; a half sister, Mrs. Elijah Murphy, Clinton; three half brothers, Percy Henson, Decatur; William, Tuscumbia, MO; Otis, Monticello; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His wife, three sons, a daughter and three brothers preceded him in death.

The following obit gives a little more information, but neither of the obits mention Viola. I don't know why. This obit is one that was re-typed when I received it so I don't know if the person who re-typed it left out the 'n' a couple of times or if the newspaper did. I also noticed that Sarah's maiden name was spelled differently in the two obits.

The LeRoy Journal - no date

Frank E. He(n)son Dies: Services Held Here Monday

Frank E. He(n)son, 87, died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Bloomington where he had been a patient for six days. He had been in ill health for several years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in Stensel's Funeral Home, Rev. W. Bruce Badger officiating. Mrs. Robert Burns was soloist and Mrs. Effie Huddlestone was organist.

Mr. Henson was born Nov. 25, 1873 at Lane in DeWitt County, a son of Charles Henry and Mary Miller Henson. He married Miss Sarah Ellen Luscaleet Jan. 20, 1903 at Clinton. She died Feb. 9, 1959. A retired carpenter, he had lived in LeRoy since 1905. He was a patient in St. Joseph Hospital and LeRoy Nursing Home prior to his most recent hospitalization.

He is survived by three sons, Russell E. "Bugs" Henson of Homewood, Frank O. Henson and Mayor Charles H. Henson of LeRoy; two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Booker of Decatur and Mrs. John Anderson of LeRoy; three half-brothers, William Henson of Tuscumbia, Mo; Percy Henson of Decatur and Otis Henson of Monticello; a half-sister Mrs. Elijah Murphy of Clinton, 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, three sons, a daugher and three brothers. One son Pvt. Delmar O. Henson, was killed in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Pallbearers were Clarence Roark, John L. Smith, Ed Spearman, Maurice Kelly, Lee Combest and Frank Cremeens.

Burial in Gilmore Cemetery.

I will get back to you in a day or two with more information. I grew up about 4 blocks from Uncle Frank and knew four of his children and their children. There are still several grandchildren still living at this time. My grandfather, James Dennis Henson was a brother to Frank Elwood Henson.

Patty
Oklahoma

My lines in DeWitt Co., IL, among others are:

Henson
Brittin
Peavler
Seniff

Correction to my earlier post. Harry Punderson Merriman was Harvey Harrison Merriman's uncle, not his brother. Both were born in Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada. Several of the Canadian Merrimans came down to McLean and DeWitt County. The first to arrive was Amasa Jay Merriman, who was also Harry's nephew and Harvey's cousin, in 1839. He came to McLean County, followed by other brothers, uncles, nephews and cousins in 1843. Their parents and grandparents had come to Canada from New Haven, Connecticut.

Harvey H. Merriman, who ran the boarding house, came to McLean County in 1843, when he was about 12, along with his father Harvey C. Merriman and his 8-year-old sister Mary. The father may have become ill shortly after because Harvey H. Merriman's obituary says he went to live with his youngest uncle Ira Mooney Merriman, a hotelkeeper in Clinton. Perhaps both Ira and his older brother Harry P. kept the hotel with John Warner. Harvey C., the father, died in Bloomington, McLean County, IL in 1846. He was a brother to Harry P. and Ira.

Grandma Merriman from the photo was born Mary M. Beedle. They had three children, Mrs. Clara Bell, wife of W.E. Bell, living in Peoria at the time of her father's death in 1901, Lucius H. Merriman, living in Clinton in 1901, and Blanche Smith, wife of Dr. D.W. Smith, who died in 1897 in Colorado, where she had gone for her health. The Smiths were living in Cisco, Piatt, County, IL before that.

Harvey Merriman ran the boarding house from 1878 to his death in 1901, and his widow may have continued following his death.

I would be glad to share more about this group of Merrimans if anyone is interested. Charles P. Merriman, brother of Harvey C. and Ira, also settled in Bloomington, McLean County.

Frank Elwood Henson is my great uncle. His obituary from Dec., 1960 indicates that Bessie's last name was Booker and that she lived in Decatur, Illinois at the time of his death. I grew up in LeRoy so I knew all of Frank's children and I remember Bessie's half-sister, Lucille, speaking of Reno and Merle Day, but I do not know if he and Bessie divorced or if Reno died and she re-married after his death.
