German Catholics in Nauvoo

I'm seeking direction to the best sources for information on German Catholic immigrants who settled in Nauvoo.

My 3rd great grandparents were Gabriel Berg (b. 29 Jul 1822 in Grossostheim, Bavaria; d. 21 May 1875 in Nauvoo) and Anna Mary/Maria Zimmerman (b. 28 Jun 1829 in Grossostheim, d. 9 Aug 1900). They had at least 8 children, one of whom was my 2nd great grandmother Margaret, b. 17 Jun 1855, presumably in Nauvoo.

Margaret married John Finke, born in Nauvoo 30 May 1853. He was the son of Johann Heinrick Finke (b. abt. 1824 in Hanover, Germany; d. bef. 1880 in Nauvoo), and Anna Catherine ? from Hanover, Germany. There were at least five children in this family.

I'm interested not only in information about my own family, but the story behind this immigration and settlement as well.

Thanks!

Will do free lookups in Hancock County area

I'm willing to do free lookups in the Hancock County Illinois area. This includes marriages, divorces, trips to cemeteries (pictures too), trips to the local Historical Society as well as the courthouse, etc. I'm going anyway, and several more things to look up shouldn't be a problem.

If you request copies of things to be sent to you, I may ask for reimbursement of postage and copy fees, depending on the cost to me and depending on how many requests I get at the same time.

If I'm not contacted on a Friday evening, I can probably look this stuff up the same day you request it (except maybe if you're asking for a picture of a headstone). But if not, please be patient and I will get back to you on it.

The Carthage Republican - date unknown.
"FATAL ACCIDENT AT HAMILTON"
James A. Kinkade, who operates a feed mill at Hamilton, was caught in a revolving belt in the engine room of his feed mill Saturday, sustaining injuries from which he died at St. Joseph Hospital, Keokuk, Saturday evening. In attempting to replace a large belt on the fly wheels his clothing became entangled drawing his body into the revolving wheels. C.B. Marshall and son and C.M. Brant, customers, came to his assistance, too late to save him.
Coroner Moore summoned a jury which rendered the following verdict:
We the jury, find that James Allen Kinkade came to his death by accidentally coming in contact with the belt of tractor engine which was being used to operate a grinder in his mill. Evidence shows that Mr. Kinkade was entirely alone in room when the accident occurred. From the evidence and circumstances it is apparent the accident was entirely accidental. Mr. Kinkade sustained a fracured fermur of right leg and other minor bruises.

He died August 1852 in Nauvoo and she died June 1876. Their son George Alexander and his wife Carrie are in the 1880 census for Nauvoo.
I have not been able to find any wills or other documents or location of the graves of James and Janet. I have contacted the historical society and the courthouse and would like to know where to look for cemetery information from that time period. I would appreciate any help.

Specifically, I am looking for any and all MARTINs who may have been living in the county at that time.

Specifically, I am looking for an Alexander Martin recently arrived from Ohio.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jeff Martin

Mary Ann Fellows - NH/Hancock County, IL

Looking for siblings or parents of Mary Ann FELLOWS who was born in New Hampshire circa 1818 and married in Hancock County, IL in 1841 to George BACKSTER/BAXTER. They settled in Muscatine County, IL by 1850 and Mary Ann apparently died there between 1870 and 1880, at which time George is listed with a different wife. A Joseph FELLOWS appears in the 1840 census of Hancock County, IL - who was he? He is the only candidate I have found as a possible parent to Mary Ann.

Thanks!

My 2nd-Great Grandmother, Louisa Maria Hall, was born in Exeter, Illinois - one source states that Exeter is in Scott County and a second source has it in Hancock County. I know that today there is a small unincorporated village called Exeter in Scott County and that Scott County was formed in 1839 from a section of Morgan County. I also know that Hancock County was formed on January 13 1825, out of Pike County. Can anyone tell me if in 1839 there was a place called Exeter in Hancock County? Thanks for your help.

I would like to make contact with you. I am doing the geneology for my husband's side. He too is related through Noel Datin and Valentine. I have many books about the Court of Louis X1V and Mme Montespan. These books mention her son from her marriage to d'Antin. His father's family was from south of France. He had a sister who was placed in a convent whom I have not been able to find any information about since she was placed there. I know that Montespan's sister was a powerful abby over a convent and that King Louis X1V enjoyed her company. She would have had the power to make anything happen. Montespan also had a brother who was at court as well as her parents, the Mortemarts. According to the Datin book that I have a copy of Noel's relatives included an astrologist in Japan, Lessups who started the Panama Cannel and the Chiro Museum. I have found information that he knew the King of Egypt, King Said and asked for his help to open the museum becasue the temple robbers were taking the artifacts out of the temples. He was known for his studies of the writings of the temples and started to record and make copies of these writing. Montespan's son d'Antin was in charge of the paintings and moved all the orginials to his home and had copies made, which it is said the King Louis X1V knew. King Louis X1V was a visitor at his home. The name was changed from D'Antin to Datin due to one of the relatives going to the wrong side during a war. the name can also be found as Antin many books. I would appreciate it if yo would contact me through rootsweb. Thank you for your time and consideration of my request for the contact.

Barnard Gang
I'm looking for the "Barnard/Bernard Gang" of Hancock Co., IL. "Big John" Barnard murdered Henley Sutton. Big John was arrested along with two of his brothers Anderson and Elisha and two cousins John Barnard Jr. and Clint Barnard. They were sentenced to death, but Governor Taylor intervened and gave two of them their freedom
[ Elisha and John Jr. [ the cousin]]. Big John got 10 years and Clinton and Anderson got 5 years. All this happened after the war and the Sutton man was a mean character also, who had killed his own father. The Newspapers had a "Heyday" with all this calling them the "Barnard Gang" Another article says; The aged grandfather of the Barnards, than whom tere is no better citizen in Hancock County, refused to allow his name to appear on the petition praying for pardon, but said, "No, the boys are guilty, and have been tried and convcted, let them suffer." All this is pieces of articles from the Newspapers from Jan. 1889 to Oct. 1892. I'm dying to know who this Barnard/Bernard family was. Can someone give me a helping hand with the census and the Newspaper articles. Thank You Karen

I am searching for information on my Whitaker family. My great grandfathers name was James Russell Whitaker (he generally went by Russell) and he was born around Adams county, Illinois. His first wife was named Anna, but I don't know much about her. His second wife was Kittie M. Martin Deeter (but I don't know how long she went by the name Deeter). I have yet to find a marriage record for them, but I would guess it would have been between 1913 & 1916. They had a farm near LaCrosse, Illinois. They had 3 children Leah Irene, Raymond, & Gladys (my grandma). James Russell died in 1925 of a hemorage (sp?) of the lungs, he had been ill for a time. I know for a time that she remained on the farm and a brother of Jame's helped her with it. I am looking for any information I can find on him, Kitty and their relatives. I know his father's name was John Whitaker and his mother I believe was Martha. John had a second wife named Fannie White. I also know that John's father was Louis Jefferson Whitaker & his mother was Sarah Whitaker. (Jefferson & Sarah died in Adam's County) I have a little bit of information on these people, but not a lot. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for any information on Uriel Sherman, my gg grandfather. He joined the 118th Infantry Regiment of Illinois Volunteer in Company A, from Fountain Green, Hancock Co, 15 Aug 1862. Uriel was married to Loanda (Lonanda?) Johnston or Johnson. They lived on a farm outside Fountain Green. It is thought that Uriel was 38yo when he enlisted. That would put him born around 1824, and we thought in Ohio. He enlisted the same day with another Sherman, Silas Gilbert, who was from Herkimer NY. Silas was only 23yo. We don't know if there is a relation between the two. Uriel had 4 sons and 1 daughter. Two of the son's were Ransom Sherman, and Elmer Emmett Sherman. Elmer was born on the farm 7 Feb 1862. Uriel died when Elmer was 12yo. Elmer is my ggrandpa. Elmer eventually moved to Iowa and was a Dr. there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
(this is all I know about my family)

My father, Karl Gene Spiker, was born in LaHarpe, IL on Aug 8, 1941. He has 2 brothers, Richard and Robert, and one sister, Alice. His mothers name is Jenny and his fathers name was Eddie or Edward.

My fathers, father Eddie (Edward) died of TB around 1947. This is when my father and his siblings were taken away from their mother Jenny and put into foster homes. The siblings were split up with Richard and Alice gong to the same home and Karl and Robert going to a different home.

Jenny Spiker now currently resides in a home for the mentaly disabled in Lomax, IL.

We have no idea where Richard or Alice is.
DAVIS, ROOT families in Nauvoo

I'm looking for any information on Asa and Sarah Davis and Erastus and Marcia (Davis) Root and Jeremiah and Emeline (Davis) Root. These families came originally from Livingston Co., NY to Geauga Co., OH...to Indiana and then to Nauvoo. I believe the Davis family stayed for some time before moving on to IA. The Root family did not stay. They all came, I believe, as part of the Mormon move into IL. The Davis family was Mormon...and two of their daughters(Marcia and Emeline) married Root brothers. I found Asa Davis and son-in-law (Randall) in the 1842 tax record. I just found the Mormon connection a few days ago...so I haven't been able to research that very much. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your time. Holly Smith

I'm looking for marriage information concerning Isadora Clark, daughter of Daniel and Eliza (Parks) Clark. Isadora first married John R. Bennett in McDonough county during 1885. The couple had 5 children, 4 living as of the 1910 census, but were divorced at the time. Dora was listed as the "house keeper", living in the home of widower Charles Henry Reimolds. By the 1920 census, Charles and Dora were listed as married, still in McDonough county.

I've checked the McDonough county marriage records, but the couple did not marry there. The Illinois Death Index lists that Dora died in Hancock county on 20 September 1949 -

REIMOLDS DORA - F/W Y-80 0036783 1949-09-20 HANCOCK 49-09-20

I would appreciate any information regarding Dora's marriage, whether found in a marriage index or perhaps a locally published obituary. I'm hoping to track down a marriage license where the couple would have listed such information as their parents' names and places of birth. Thank you!

William Andrew Jackson Phillips was born about 1867 in Hancock County, Illinois. Parents were born in Pennsylvania. Simon Phillips of Hancock County could possibly be his father. William married Pearl Gray Hull of Pike County, Illinois. At the time of their marriage in 1915 they both were living in Adams County, Illinois but were married in Missouri. They were the parents of Mary Ellen, Julia Ann, Gladys, Gwendolyn, William Simon, David and Luana. On the 1920 census they were in Adams County, he was a Minister working as a Missionary. 1930 they were in Clark County, Missouri. They did not stay in one place very long. They were divorced and his wife married Robert Hatfield of Scotland County, Missouri. In 1932 William J. Phillips was living in Warsaw, Illinois. He died before 1946. I have tried the Illinois death index, the Missouri death index, court houses in Adams and Hancock County, IL. and Memphis, Mo., Keokuk and Fort Madison in Lee County, Iowa, all known places he lived and cannot find a death record for him or a burial place. I contacted a member of his family and they did not know anything about him. I am going to post this in Adams and Scotland Counties to see if anyone out there may have a connection to this person and can give me a birth and death date and the names of his parents and siblings.

Need help finding ROLLOSSON relatives in Hancock Co.

I am hoping someone can help me find my Rollosson relatives from Hancock Co. 3g-grandfather William Henry Rollosson (Rollisson on the marriage certificate) married Marietta Bostwick in Hancock Co. in 1855. The 1880 census lists Marietta Rollosson as head of household with her three sons, William Henry (jr), George B., and John Milton, my gg-grandfather. I do not know what happened to William Henry, nor to Marietta, nor her two older sons.

John Milton Rollosson married Mary Melissa Reynolds in 1883 (marriage license from Knox County). My great-grandfather, Frederick A. Rollosson, was supposedly born in Nauvoo. At some point he ended up in Louisiana, as did his mother, who is buried there, but again I have no idea where John Milton ended up.

If anyone has come across any of these names in your own research, I would love to know. It would be nice just to know where they are buried.

Thanks.

-Catherine Rollosson Halbhuber

Hi!
I'm looking for a shoulder patch of the above Sheriff's Department. A current one would be nice. I am VERY interested in getting the patch worn by their agency between 1966 - 1970 when Jamie Rhea was Sheriff.
Letters to the current Sheriff have received no response.
Also any information on former Sheriff Rhea and the two gentlemen who were his deputies during this time period would be appreciated.
Hancock Co. S/O was profiled in an article in the Chicago Tribune magazine on November 1, 1970 entitled "Hello Sheriff? Someone stole my tractor radio. Tractor too." I have a copy of this article which sparked my interest in their department.
Thanks & have a great day!
Don

Warsaw brick structure built in 1866?

This past weekend we were driving in the area and came across a very interesting building in the city of Warsaw. It is a very large, 4 story brick building on the road closest to the Mississippi. It was built in 1866 (according to the date on the top of the building front) and had many windows with a center stairway in the front of the structure. We followed the main street down to the river then turned left and went past the "caves or tunnels". I think we went about a hlf a mile when we came across the building on the river side of the road. The building also had what looked to be a barn and some out buildings nearby. We asked a local resident and he replied that it had been a battery factory the closed in 1979. What was it before that? Why was it built?
We are fascinated by the architecture of the area and the original conditon of glass panes, doors, roofs, etc... Any info on the are would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hello
I am looking for a needle in a haystack!
Ludwig/Lewis/Louis Friedrich/Fredericks (or some other variation of the names) is reported to be buried in a cemetery in Nauvoo.

Ludwig/Lewis was a Civil War Vet Company F, 82nd Infantry Regiment, Illinois

We find him listed on the Vets list in the Rulo, NE area in 1890, but we cannot find him buried in that area. We believe he may have been Catholic.

The family says that he was buried in Nauvoo, IL - we do not know any connections for this family in Illinois, but we don't know where else to look.

Does anyone do lookups for Nauvoo cemeteries? Any hints or ideas are appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Stephanie

Looking for anyone that may be researching this family. I have not proved that the Wm Ross I found on the 1850 and 1860 census records with a wife of Martha is mine or not. Sarah Ross married Moses True Dyer in Hancock County in 1847 and in 1852 came to Oregon with a daughter Lauretta. I have them on the 1850 census in Hancock. I believe that Wm Ross died before Sept. 5 of 1870, I found a guardianship record in Douglas County, Oregon with the name of Wm Ross and listing the children of Sarah. Thanks, Lorelee Iles Dendauw~Oregon

Thomas Nichols

Mr. and Mrs Thomas Nichols occupied my house for 25 years (1867-1892) I wondered if anyone had any information about them. I see the name Nichols on this forum quite a bit and thought I'd try again. I'm looking for anything I can get regarding occupation, etc. Pictures of my house from back then would make me ecstatic, but I certainly don't expect them... as always: writings in diaries or letters to family about the house, incidental family portraits from inside the house, floorplans (yeah right) anything, really. Even just a good oral story about my house or family gatherings there would be awesome.

The same goes for the people who have lived in the house. I'd like to start an album of previous owners and tell a little about them and their families.

Thought I'd let folks know in case he has family who might like to bid on them. Bidding ends in a couple of days. I don't have any more information on Capt. Tyler or the auction itself.

Marion Calvin Eckles biography - 1921

Marion Calvin Eckles biography

Marion Calvin Eckles, a very successful general farmer and stockraiser of Durham Township, is one of the substantial men of Hancock County. He was born in Durham Township, November 29, 1884, a son of Americus and Frances (Nichols) Eckles, born in Hancock County. The paternal* grandfather, Joseph Nichols, was one of the very early settlers of this neighborhood. After their marriage, the parents settled in Durham Township, but later retired and now make their home at La Harpe.
Marion Calvin Eckles attended the district schools, Gittings Seminary of La Harpe, and one term at the Peoria Business College, following which he remained with his parents until he attained his majority. At that time, he entered the Farmers State Exchange Bank, at Dallas City, Ill. and remained for a time, leaving it to go on a farm his father owned in La Harpe Township, conducted that for eight years. He then moved to the homestead of over 300 acres, in Durham Township, where hs ie now carrying on general farming, and raising horses, cattle and hogs.
On February 28, 1919, Mr. Eckles was married at La Harpe, to Millie M. Bushnell, born at Blandinsville, Ill., Oct. 24, 1889, a daughter of Henry and Laura Bushnell. Mr. and Mrs. Eckles have had three children, namely: Francis, born December 15, 1911; Laura, born October 1, 1916; and Marion, who died March 2, 1918. In politics he is a Democrat. He is a notary public. A man of ability, he has turned his talents toward agriculture with very gratifying results, and just at present his efforts are especially valuable, for every man who has engaged in raising foodstuffs as he has, has done much for his country in her day of peril. - Pg 1191 - Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois & History of Hancock County, Vol. II, by Charles J. Scofield, Munsell Publishing Co., Chicago, Illinois 1921

* Should say “maternal”.
