12 March 1863 p3 c3 - Departed Heroes - On Wednesday, 4th instant, a solemn gloom was cast over our quiet city by the arrival of the last remains of five of the members of the 106th Regiment Illinois Volunteers, who enlisted in this place to go forth, and battle for their country’s cause; but alas! death’s grim visage hath borne them to our doors, whose loss is mourned by friends and kindred dear. Their names are: James M. C. Maltby, Co. G; William Small, Co. H; William Warrick, Co. C; Henry Lemly, Co. F; Sinnet Rankin, Co. C. Through the kind and indefatigable exertions of ex-Sheriff Nicholson and Orderly Robinson, their bodies were brought to their city, where a large concourse of friends assembled to pay their last respects to the sleeping dead. - For every one who falls in battle some one mourns. For every man who dies in hospital wards, and of who no note is made, some one mourns. For the humblest soldier shot on picket, and of whose humble exit from the stage of life little is thought, some one mourns. Nor this alone. For every soldier disabled; for every one who loses an arm or leg, or who is wounded or languishes in protracted suffering; for every one who had “only camp fever,” some heart bleeds, some tears are shed. In far off humble households, perhaps, sleepless nights and anxious days are passed of which the world never knows; and every wounded soldier who returns to his family or friends brings a lasting pang with him. Oh! how the mothers feel this war! If ever God is sad in heaven, it seems to us it must be when He looks upon the hearts of mothers.
