Hmmm... It was a different website that pegged it closer to Sangamon on the map but gave the same coordinates. It appears that the other map was incorrect because I agree that it is NE of Athens when I plug those coordinates into Google maps.

When I said South Athens I was referring to the township map that the IL State Archives uses to distinguish different areas of Menard County. But it appears that would be incorrect.

They should have outlawed using the same city name throughout an entire state. It is just nuts. :)

I was thinking of contact Menard County Assessors Office. Maybe they could pinpoint an area that never was an actual city but was commonly referred to as Walnut Grove. The land records today may still refer to an area that way like a subdivision name.
