Libbys and Shaws in Mercer County

Abraham Libby (b: Dec 10 1784 in Maine d: Jun 4 1848 in Mercer Co.) and Phebe Moulton (b:Maine d: Aug 14 1841 probably Mercer Co.) migrated from Maine to Illinois about 1840. Abraham served as a minister with the Methodist Espiscopal church. Their daughter, Phebe Ann Libby Shaw (b: Oct 24 1831 Maine d: Oct 8 1892 Kansas) appears with her sister Olive Farrall in the 1860 census, occupation: Common School Teacher.

Levi Shaw (b:Feb 3 1802 Newark, NJ d: Feb 22 1864 in Mercer Co) was married to Martha Metzler before they moved to Illinois. Their son, Velzer (sometimes misspelled Valser or Delzer) (b: Jun 9 1837 in Berlin, IL? d: Feb 18 1934 in Kansas) It's possible that Levi's father William G. Shaw (1752-?) also made the trip to Mercer County.

It appears the County Death records start with 1877. Are there any records before then? I don't know what cemetary anyone was buried in.

I'm hoping someone might have some information on this line or that I might find a family connection.

While there, I purchased an old photo album containing pictures of the Fuhr family from approximately the 1880's to 1900.

There are 27 photos in the album. The album itself is in very poor condition, however the pictures are in perfect condition.

Only 2 of the photos were identified.

One of the photos was labeled "Grandpa Fuhr's sister Catherine Rudolf."

I would very much like to see these photos placed with descendants of Grandpa Fuhr's.

Please contact me if interested.

In The History of Mercer and Henderson Counties (1882), John B. Smith (1818-1892) identifies his parents as Edward Smith and Rebecca Reasoner Smith (p. 693). Is this the Rebecca Reasoner Smith living with George and Phebe Smith in the 1850 census? Any information about Rebecca would be deeply appreciated. I'd be glad to share what I do know about the Smiths who came from Muskingum and Marion County, Ohio, to Mercer County.

I'd also be glad to do lookups in The History of Mercer and Henderson Counties.
.

LARRANCE family in New Boston township

Jonathan LARRANCE married Elizabeth SWAFFORD in Henry Co. IN in 1830 and they were there for the 1830 census. About 1837 they moved to Mercer Co. IL and were there in the 1840 census. Both died before 1850, and I found 4 of their children (they may have had more?) in the 1850 census:
1850 ,Mercer,IL township 13 N R 4 (W?) p 351 2 Sep 1850 #108/108
George Ralston 34 M farmer Ohio
Lavina Ralston 22 F IN
Louisa B. Lawrence 18 F IN
Ealanor W. Lawrence 17 F IN
Noah Noble Lawrence 15 M farmer IN
Americus Lawrence 8 F (sic-was really male)Iowa

Louisa married William P. MYERS and they are buried in New Boston Cemetery. Their children in the 1880 census (Mercer Co.) are: Myron, Horace, Grace, Lloyd, Lillie and Earle Myers.

I haven't found anything about Ealanor. Did she married in Mercer Co.?

Noah Larrance married 1st to Amanda Alice Mannon in 1864. They had 2 daughters, Maud (m. W. L. Spore) and Rose (m. U. S. Grant Commons, before Amanda died. Noah remarried a Nancy (surname unknown). In the 1880 census they have 3 sons: Harry O., Joshua E. and William Larrance.

Americus V. Larrance married Rebecca Irene Drew in 1863. In the 1880 Mercer Co. census they have 2 daughters, Ethel (m. Bert Poffenbarger) and Pearl. Another daughter, Estella, had died in 1874.

I am researching Larrance descendants, so I would appreciate any information on any of these people, or contact with descendants. Thank you!

James Shaw Obituary

After many weeks of suffering from a cancer upon the side of his face and on his throat, James Shaw, a citizen of this city for many years, passed away peacefully to his final rest at 11:30 am Friday August 12,1904. Funeral services were held from the late residence in the northeast part of the city on Saturday at 3:30 pm Dr. U.Z. Gilmer
officiating. Interment was in the Aledo Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Indiana, January 5,1845 and came with his parents when he was 10 years old to Millersburg, where he grew to manhood and worked several years. In 1870 he came to Aledo and engaged in the draying business, which he followed for 25 years. After quitting
the draying business, he carried mail between this city and Millersburg for several years.

Mr. Shaw was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Fuller who survives him. To them, five children were born
of whom three are dead and two sons Charles P. and J. Will
reside in this city. Four brothers and three sisters, all of whom live in the west survive him.

Several years ago, Mr. Shaw while draying received a bruise upon his cheek. A small enlargement resulted which gave him no trouble until a year ago when it developed into
a malignant cancer, which resisted all medical treatment
and finally caused his death.

Mr. Shaw took the harsh share of suffering that was his lot with an uncomplaining patience. He was ready to go to his Master and often expressed the wish that he might be taken. ( This Obit was taken from the Aledo Newspaper 1904 ) The parents of James was G.E. and Lucinda Shaw and
the parents of Elizabeth were Jefferson and Elizabeth Blaisdell Fuller Sr.

Michael, Daniel, and Dennis Guinty (Ginty)

Michael Guinty was from Preemption and married Sophronia Sophia Wood in 1867. On the 1860 census for Mercer County I believe Michael lived with Henry & Mary Corns. He had two brothers Daniel and Dennis. I have naturalization records for them with Michael signing as a witness, those are dated 1858, the location was Rock Island, IL. I have an 1850 census record when they lived in LaSalle County, IL. They also had sisters Ann, Ellen, Bridget, and Mary. Their parents died about 1851, I believe from cholera in LaSalle County and evidently the children were scattered at that time; but the naturalization records indicate the boys must have kept in contact. Daniel, my gg grandfather, settled in Henry County and owned the land that is now Oakwood Country Club/Golf Course. Michael went on to fight in the civil war and he and Sophronia relocated to Kansas. Although I a fair amount of information on Daniel and Michael, I do not know what happened to Dennis after naturalization in 1858 and I have no record of the girls after the 1850 census. Any information on any of these Guintys would be very much appreciated.

Archibald GARDNER, Rachel BICKERTON

I'm looking for information on a GARDNER family in Aledo around 1864.

Rachel BICKERTON (born 21 November 1844, England)
married Archibald Gardner (born 4 January 1836, Scotland)
in Streator, LaSalle county, when his regiment (30th Ill. Infantry, Co. A) was on leave during the Civil War.

He was a resident of Aledo, Mercer County when he enlisted. A William Gardner also of Aledo, enlisted on the same date, this may be a brother or father.

I believe he came to the US in 1854 and I know he moved to Iowa by 1885, so that narrows down the dates.

I don't have any information on his parents so if anyone has that information it would be greatly appreciated.

We are planning a trip to Keithsburg in Aug. My Mother's family lived in Keithsburg around 1910 through 1975. I am wondering if anyone still in Keithsburg knew them.
Grandmother: Pearl Garner
Grandfather: Bert Kinsey
Mother: Elizabeth Kinsey (born 1915 - graduated from Keithsburg High School in 1933)
Uncle: John Kinsey
Cousin: Lane Kinsey - ex-wife Donna, son Christopher
I have fond memories of summers in Keithsburg and would like to know if Donna and Christopher are still in the area? My Grandfather was a bridge tender on the Mississippi River in Keithsburg. I remember shells in the road with holes punched out for buttons that were made in the local button factory. We called the turn-off to Keithsburg the 'hard road'. The grade school had a metal fire escape which was a large tube. Lane and I would play in it until someone chased us off. There was a roller rink, a smoke house, Crow's gas station and a general store. I learned to ride my 2 wheeler on what we called the 'sand hill'. The Hickerson's lived next door (he was a doctor). We would put on plays in their back yard. Has it changed much?

CRANDALL/CRANDELL, William L

I am trying to trace a descendant of my great grandfather's sister. Jeanette Dailey, b. 1854 in St. Croix Co., WI married Lorenzo Crandall in 1874 in St. Croix Co. Their only child Guy was born circa 1876. In 1895 Guy married Helen Hodgins. They had one son William Lorenzo b. 1896. William lived with grandfather Lorenzo and his second wife Josephine most of the time. Wm is actually cited as Lorenzo's son in the 1910 census. In 1930 Wm. is found in Fairbault, Rice Co., MN as an instructor in a private school. The S.S. Death Index and the History of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Hudson, Wis. cite his death as Jan 1972 in Mercer Co, Illinois. His S.S. number was issued in Illinois as well. Does anyone know of this Crandall line? Any help in finding out about William's life(marriage, children, etc.) is most appreciated! Thank you, Dawn

I can never get the links to paste right, but the item number is 130009773859 ans if you search for Joy Illinois Bible it should be about the only thing that comes up.

Marriage page appears to say Amos Kiddoo married Mary Fullerton, February 10th 1891. The births page has son born dead March 25 1883, Bertha Florence Kiddoo born March 13 1891 & Edrice Fern Kiddoo born July 9 1894 (per seller). Bible has letters & such from Joy, IL with it

It is a great condition Parallel Bible, so the collectors have bid it up to $102 already. Apparently the seller also has a photo of Walter Fullerton up separately.

I will not be bidding on or aquiring this Bible, but would love to post it if anyone else does. My finances are too tight.

Tracy St Claire
Bible Records Online
www.biblerecords.com

Welliver has about 100 spellings, Woolever, wolliver Wolivar... They all came from PA late 1850's or later (Columbia and Montour Co's). There are 3 Jacobs, one in Hamlet, N. Henderson, and Premption in 1860 census.

Jacob ( wife Christiana/ Christina) and Russell P. live a house away from each other. (Hamlet) I am trying to tie them all together. I need parent info on them. Allen seems to be the oldest living in Mercer. Some of the Wellivers married Dunn's in Mercer.

Jacob and Christian's duaghter Mary catherine married W. Scott Hughes in Mercer. The Hughes went to Mo for a while and then returned to Mercer. They have Ira, Anna B., and Lenore. I am very interested in this family of Wellivers.

Russell has Winfield, Henderson (killed in civil war), Margaret, Eliza A.. Russels wife was a Cool probably. (Elizabeth)

There are a lot of families from the same area of PA around them in the Hamlet area, Blue, Deihl...

Any help is appreciated.

Trying to find family who immigrated from Sweden in two groups. The first consisted of Augusta Matilda Anderson, her sister, Charlotta Elisabeth Anderson (b. 1866) and a cousin, Emma Wilhelmina Gustafson (b. 1855). They came in 1878. The second group came in 1880 and consisted of a brother and sister, Clas Ludvig Anderson (b.1859) and Anna Louisa Anderson (b. 1864). They had tickets for Keithsburg in Mercer Co. where Augusta Matilda was living in Bald Bluff Twp. Does anyone know what happened to the other cousin or brother or sisters? Emma may have gone to Rockford, IL and married a Fredlund.

I have been trying to find info on my Forster line. I happened across something this morning on the 1880 census and was hoping that someone might be able to shed some light on it for me. I was told by my grandmother that her parents were Marshall Lafayette & Clara Louisa Forster Lutrell. Clara's parents were Thomas Kingsley & Mary Lucinda Mundy Forster.

On the 1880 census today, I happened to find Clara Forster's brothers listed as Foster. That isn't the first time that I have seen the Forster name as Foster. What really confuses me is the fact that the 4 boys were listed in the household of M.F. & Mary J. Postlewait. I have no clue as to who this family would be, or why the boys were living with them. Thomas & Clara were still living, and I have no sons who would have married a Postlewait, so it's not like they were grandparents. Can anyone help me with this family?
Cabeen Spence Sears family Query

Is there any Cabeen or Spence family members out there with detailed family geneaolgy? I am looking for information on Samuel Porter Cabeen and (wife?) Catherine Cabeen. I am trying to find information on Catherine's children with a husband Jesse Spence from Chariton , Mo. I am confused about the order of marriage with Samuel and Jesse. Was Catherine a Cabeen in the first place and married her cousin? The information I have is from a decendency chart off the web for Thomas Cabeen I, an Ahnentafel off Rootsweb from the Mulligan Family, and the 1850 census for Samuel P Cabeen. The individual we are trying to track is Martha or Maggie Ann Spence d/o Catherine and Jesse. Our Maggie married a ? Sears and had one child (we know of) William. She was tracked to Catherine and Jesse through a marriage license found in Clinton, Iowa to a second husband Daniel VonVorst.

Thank You

School or Club - Initials WVBC - ca. 1909

I have a photo of a basketball team ca. 1909. There are six of them, and the names are Graham (2 of those), Dodson, Stephens, Speer, and Phillipp. Stephens is holding a basketball that has written on it W.V. (top) B.C. (bottom) 0(left) and 9 (right). There are no first names, and I'm trying to figure out where this Dodson fits into my family tree. Does anyone know about a school or club in Mercer county in the early 1900s with the initials WCVB? Thanks!

James & Electa (Axtell) Blair were listed as living in Mercer County in the 1910 (New Boston), the 1920 (Eliza) and 1930 (Millersburg) census records. He was born in Morning Sun, IA on 12/14/1871. They had three children - Morrison, Marie, and Robert. As I cannot find when James and Electa passed away, I am hoping they remained in Mercer County. If someone if familiar with the family and could find obituaries for them I sure would appreciate it. Thanks for any assistance. Fran, Iowa
