Meredosia - New Route 104

The past year or so, there have been blurbs in the Looking Back column of the Jacksonville, Ill. Journal-Courier about the construction of Illinois Route 104, which runs from Quincy to Taylorville. Meredosia is located on 104. The bridge there is in bad condition and is scheduled to be replaced. According to the present plan, the new route will start at an angle running northwest from near the Grade School, through the park, and then to the river, north of where the present bridge is located. In another message, here or on the Morgan Area Gen. Assoc. Message Board (MAGA), there was some information about a "soda" operation in Meredosia. It was located west of "the little hotel", which for many years was the home of the James Majors and family. The home is scheduled to be demolished. However, the Baujan home, immediately to the north across the alley, seems to have been spared. For those of you familiar with "Dosh" and the buildings along the new route, you might want to contact the Meredosia Museum to see if someone locally could take photos of your places of interest before they are razed. I believe that the Shaffer funeral home and the "pecan house" to the west are on the list, as is the house on the corner across from the park. The Lutheran church was demolished a few years ago. This will definitely change the look of the hub of the town. By destroying familiar landmarks, it will be more difficult to locate exactly where your ancestors resided or had businesses in that part of town. Hope this is helpful. Kathleen (STANFIELD) COOK
