My great great grandfather was Liberty Courtney, his daughter Matilda was my great grandmother. They are listed in the 1860 Census for Jacksonville, Mason County, IL although their last name was misspelled:
1860 COMTRING LIBERTY Morgan County IL 763 Jacksonville Township
Liberty, age 42, farmer, b. KY
Eliza, age 30, b. IL
Eliza, age 9, b. IL
Mat, age 7, female, b. IL
Lu, age 5, female, b. IL
Dor, age 2, female, b. IL
Smith, Dan, laborer, b. MD or MO
Eliza Courtney (aged 30 in the Census was the daughter of George A. Taylor). Eliza was living with her father in Cooperstown, Brown County, IL during the 1850 census. Liberty Courtney was living nearby with two sisters, Eliza and Julian (Julianne?).
Eliza married Liberty Courtney in June 1850.
By 1870 Liberty was living in Quincy, IL and was remarried. In the 1880 Census he was living in McKee, Adams County IL with his wife Elizabeth (Elizabeth Keyte) and his children.
Matilda was living with the Dr. Kirkpatrick family in Camp Point, Adams Co., IL in the 1870 Census. I have not been able to locate Matilda duirng the 1880 Census.
In Jan 1882, Matilda gave birth to a son named Arthur Jared Valentine, son of Jacob Valentine, in Hannibal, MO. I have not been able to locate a marriage between Matilda and Jacob Valentine. There is one Jacob Valentine, age 50 in the 1880 Census for Hannibal, Marion County, MO however this Jacob married a Tilley Patterson who is buried in Mt. Olivette Cemetery in Hannibal. He married Tilley in 1881. This does not preclude him from being the father (out of wedlock) of Arthur
Matilda also gave birth to a daughter, Nellie Courtney, on 30 Mar 1878 (illigitmate, father unknown) in the Adams County Poor House. Nellie died 31 Mar 1878.
Matilda married William Purvis in 1891 in Camp Point, Adams County, IL. On this marriage certificate she used a maiden name of Combs and a married name of Courtney. There is also a bible that was presented to her as Mrs. Matilda Courtney.
Her next marriage was in 1899 to William Lantis in Camp Point, Adams County, IL. On this (her final marriage) she reported her maiden name as Courtney with her parents as Liberty Courtney and Eliza Taylor. Matilda and son Arthur are living with William Lantis and his three sons Charles, George and Ray in the 1900 Census for the Village of Camp Point, Camp Point Township, Adams County, IL.
Where can I find Matilda in 1880?
The 1900 census for Arthur with the Lantis family shows that his father was born in IL. Can someone help me find the correct Jacob Valentine?
