Trying to find more on the family of William & Sarah (Clark) Chase. Based on census records, he was b. abt 1830 MD, she abt. 1842 OH or WI. Something I'm very confused about also is whether they were black or white.
1860 census: They are with Hiram J. Matter & family in Pine Creek, no race listed.
1865 IL census: Shows William Chase as a head of household in Pine Creek. The last columns under free persons of color are listed 2 males, 3 females.
1870 census: They are in Oregon, Ogle co. William is listed as Black, the rest of the family as White?? Shown are children: Caroline "Carrie" b. abt 1860, Ida b. abt 1861, George b. abt 1863, Lucy b. abt 1866, Sarah b. abt 1868, William b. abt 1869.
I can not find any of them before 1860 or after 1870. My husband's ancestor is Caroline Virginia "Carrie" Chase who married Joseph B. Green(e) of IA on 2 May 1880 in Clayton co., IA. I've also looked in the various counties in IA that the Green(e) family lived in. They moved to MN where Carrie died in 1923. Her death certificate lists her parents as William Chase & Sarah Clark.
They seem to have appeared, had kids, then disappeared. :)
