Manning Monitor February 3, 1920

Nellie Tressa Rutz-Potthast one of six children of John and Minnie Rutz was born August 20, 1877 in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of 10 years she moved with her parents to Lincoln Center, Audubon County, Iowa. Here she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. On May 12, 1895 she was united in marriage to Walter Potthast and they have made there home in Manning ever since, except for a period when Mr. Potthast was in the RR Business. To them 3 children, Minnie, LaVere and Irene. For ten years she had suffered from brights disease and tho every effort was made to give her relief, it was to no avail. She made a good fight for life and was patient and uncomplaining till the Death Angel came to bring her relief Friday morning at 1:40, aged 43 years, 5 months and 8 days. She was member of the Women's Relief Corps and that organization acted as a guard of honor at her funeral services Monday afternoon. She leaves to mourn her loss her faithful husband, 3 children, 4 sisters, Mrs. Charles Kienast of Centerville, SD, Mrs. Chars Spornene of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. August Massen of Guthrie, OK., Mrs. Henry Crane of Boresford, SD., and a brother Carl Rutz of Centervill, SD., and many friends and neighbors. She was a faithful wife, a loving sacrificing mother and a good neighbor. She made her home life first. While no one could deny her relief from the pain and weariness she endured for so long, it is with regret that we give her up for a time. The sympathy of the community surely goes out to this stricken family in its sorrow. The funeral service was held in the Methodist Church, the Pastor conducting the last rites and the remains laid to rest in the Manning cemetery.
