I have some information for you on the Escue side if you are interested. My great-grandfather was Fred Escue and my great-grandmother was a Melvina (Lambert) Escue, who was my grandfather's mother. Your information doesn't show her, but it does show 3 other wives. I wonder if he was married a 4th time? I can do some checking on that if you are interested.

Christi (Escue) Germann

For example, I'm still looking for obit for Edmond Green Escue, who died Feb 13, 1918 and Sophronia Isabel Coleman Escue who died Dec 05, 1917.

Joyce Escue Culver

No one applied for a pension for Thomas S Lewis. I found my Tolers in the 1850 Union County Census. The name is misspelled as Toller, but it's John and Abigal and they have daughters Elizabeth and Nancy. The family lived next door to Jesse Toller which I assume is also a misspelling. Now I just have to find out what happened to Nancy to be sure that my Leander was her son and not the son of Elizabeth. That's the thing I really need to clarify.
Thanks for all your help.

Thank you for your reply! I have gotten CW pension records for Samuel Lence and his brother-in-law, William Calvin Hale, and checked a service record for Jacob Lence, but it was the wrong man (10 years too old for my family.) William Hale and Elizabeth Lence were married at the home of Adam Lence, her "uncle," But in examining his family, he is in the generation between between Mary and her children, and appears to be the eldest child in his family. In order for him to be a true uncle, he would need an elder brother born somewhere in the neighborhood of 1810. I believe that you may be correct about Mary being the Lence, but I still can't find a Lence family where she fits. She was born in North Carolina and could belong to one of the families that stayed behind, but no one fits there either that I have found. Any ideas? Unfortunately, I don't know of a surviving Lence descendant on my side (paternal grandmother). So you can understand my brickwall. Any suggestions for further research areas are greatly appreciate.

Did anyone receive a pension from Thomas Lewis. If Nancy was dead before or died during the year of 1870. Thomas Lewis children would receive a pension.
What other families were living near the Buckners in the Arkansas census 1870? I will look at the census. I will check to see what I have on the Lewis family there are marriages in other lines I research the Tripp families.

It has been almost three years since the last reply, but the only sure way of answering whether Samuel & Jacob are Lentz/Lence descendants is DNA test a male descendant of each. DNA testing confirmed the "4 brother" thought in NC proving Dewalt & Sebastian as brothers, and are ancestors of the Lentz/Lences in southern Illinois. Did anyone ever get the war and pension records for the Jacob b. 1833 son of Mary Lence? At present I can't remember, but didn't one of the daughters get married at the home of her uncle Adam Lence in Jonesboro? I'll stick my neck out, but I believe Mary was the Lence, and never married.

I'm still waiting for his military records from NARA but it appears that Thomas was in the 6th Illinois Calavary and enlisting in 1861 and ended up in Andersonville. Nancy was said to have died in childbirth. You see my ggrandfather's history is rather murky. He was suppose to have been born in Illinois as was his mother. His parents were suppose to have died and he was taken in by a family of Buckners. I found him on the 1870 census of Lawrence County Arkansas living with Leonard and Elizabeth Buckner. When I found out that Elizabeth was a Toler I went looking for Tolers. That led me to Thomas and Nancy. The part about Thomas fits all the family stories but I can't find anything on Nancy. I would love to be able to say that I've finally found his parents but if I can't find any documentation I am still at a dead end. I've search through Union County, Williamson County and Alexander County with no luck. I'm sending for their marriage lin hoping there will be something there. I do appreciate your help very much. Even if you prove our assumptions wrong that's helpful because I will stop wasting my time and look elsewhere.

I have been researching the Toler's of Union County Illinois and Southern Illinois for about 15 years. I have been working on your problem. When and where did Thomas S.Lewis die. What outfit was he in. Most Toler's were Union Soldiers. I did find a Nancy Lewis in the census 1870 with a son Samuel Lewis. Would S. stand for Samuel as a middle name.? What county timelines should we look for.

I don't want to hurt feelings and I appreciate all the help I get but I haven't been able to find any documentation except for the marriage record that I've found several places. I am gratiful for the information passed on by the Buckner researcher but I take everything with a grain of salt until I see some documentation. Anything you can find would help a great deal.

I found a Buckner Family Tree on Ancestry.com it has Jonathan Toler son of Stephen Toler and Elizabeth Powell. I have Stephen Toler's Wayne Co NC will. There is no Jonathan Toler mentioned in the will. I did see a marriage Jonathan Toler and Abisalla. Now question is how did documentation for Elizabeth Toler daughter of Jonathan Toler. There were Stephen Ashley Toler (my line), John Marshall Toler, Powell Toler, Silas Toler, William Toler,Lewis Toler, and sister Elizabeth Toler Wiggs came to Union Co IL. Their uncle Jesse Toler also came to Union Co IL. Williamson Co IL boarders Union Co IL. Now which Toler married a Abisilla. I believe Powell Toler married Abisilla Bridges. I do have a Nancy Toler married to Thomas J. Fain 12 Dec 1843 in Johnson Co IL. Question did Nancy Toler marry before Thomas Lewis???
I do not have a Elizabeth Toler in my file married to a Buckner. Does not mean that I have every Toler documented. We need to look at census records and I will see what I can find. I would believe that Nancy and Elizabeth have to belong to one of the original Toler brothers mentioned above or their Uncle Jesse Toler.
Tim Casey

According to a Buckner researcher Nancy Jane Toler was the daughter of Jonathan Toler and the sister of Elizabeth Toler who married Leonard M Buckner. I'm trying to document this. All I know for sure is that Nancy Jane Toler married Thomas S Lewis on April 11 1856 in Union County Illinois. Katherine moved to Walnut Creek, CA area to be closer to her daughters and is buried in the area. Many of the Schmitt family is interred at the Holy Cross cemetary in Wendelin. You can assess this website for free: find a grave.com. I have gathered some information from this site based on the information from the headstones. Joseph H. Schmitt, my grandfather, is the son of Leonard and Katherina Schmitt. He is buried in St paul MN with my Grandmother, Susan Iffert Schmitt. I believe that this may help.

William Mercer (1850) - Union/Pulaski Co. Leona/Lenora

I am interested in any connection to this Mercer line, marriage/death/obits of William F. Mercer (1850), m. Leona/Lenora unknown maiden or birth year. Both may have died between 1873-1880

The following are census findings, of William's parents Thomas Mercer & Minerva nee Allen 1850-1860 and 1870 census of William, age 19/20, in both Pulaski & Union Counties.

In the 1870 census I find two William Mercer's 6 miles a part, one living with a Lenora Baggs, b. abt. 1828, IL and the other with his sister Caroline/Charlotta nee Mercer Briley. I am pretty sure both Williams the same person and since notes of my cousin has William m. Leona, I presume Lenora is whom he married abt. 1871-1873.

First born George Allen Mercer, Sep 1873, IL, found in 1880 census, no parents. My presumption is both William and Leona/Lenora died after 1873, bef. 1880 in either Union or Polaski Counties.

1850 census

Name: Thomas M Mercer
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814
Birth Place: IL
Home in 1850: District 2, Johnson, IL

Household Members:
Thomas M Mercer 36
Minerva Mercer 37, b. abt. 1813, KY
Charlotte Mercer, dau., 17, b. abt. 1833, IL, marries Samuel Briley
Francis M Mercer, son, 11, b. abt. 1839, IL
Harriet Mercer, dau., 4, b. abt. 1846,
William Mercer, son, b. abt. Jan 1850

1860 census

Name: Thos M Mercer
Age in 1860: 45
Birth Year: abt 1815
Birthplace: IL
Home in 1860: Pulaski, IL
Post Office: Wetaug

Household Members:
Thos M Mercer 45
Manerva Mercer 50, b. abt. 1810, KY
Francis Mercer 20, b. abt. 1840, IL
Harriet Mercer 12, b.abt. 1858, IL
Wm Mercer 10, b. abt. 1850, IL
Melissa Allen 19, b. abt. 1841, IL – is related to Minerva Allen, most likely a niece.

1870 census

Name: William Mercer (possibly William F) census taken 17 Aug 1870
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Age in 1870: 19
Birthplace: Illinois
Home in 1870: Township 14 Range 1, Pulaski, Illinois
Post Office: Ullin

Household Members:

Lenora Baggs, 42, b. abt. 1828, IL
Malinda Baggs 20, b. abt. 1850
Henry Baggs 15, b. abt. 1855
Marshall Baggs 12, b. abt. 1858
Lizzie Frazier 12
William Mercer 19

Note: Dongola, Union Co., is 6 miles from Ullin, Pulaski Co. So it is possible both William Mercer’s are one in the same. As the census for the two locations were taken a month a part.

The Lenora above maybe Lenora Boren, who m. Jackson Beggs, 10 Apr 1842, Union Co.

Name: Samuel Briley - census taken 18 Jul 1870
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Age in 1870: 39
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1870: Dongola, Union, IL

Household Members:
Samuel Briley 39
Caroline Briley 37, b. abt. 1833, IL in 1880 is Charlotta B. Briley 47, in the 1880 census
Sarah M Briley 17
Manerva Mersir 60, b. abt. 1810, KY
William F Mersir 20, b. abt. 1850, IL
Henry Mersir 10, b. abt. 1860, IL

Notes: George A. Mercer in 1880, age 6 is the son of William & Lenora/Leona Mercer

Living Mercer-1944>Wayne Everette-1921>Ben Schrieber-1899>George Allen-1873>William F-1850>Thomas M.-1814>Richard H.???

http://drdocyoung.com/others/mercer-ringnell/mercer.htm

I appreciate any assistance,

D.R.
Cemetery, Death or Probate record lookup in Anna area...Please!

Hello Fellow Union County Researchers!

I am looking for any records for a Slack Family in the Anna /Jonesboro area -particularly death and burial. Here are some particulars:
Henry Slack, b. @1820 in New Jersey, d. probably in Anna, Ill., after 1870.
Married Rachel (Kitchin) Slack, b. @ 1821 in New Hope, Penn, died after 1900 in, probably, Anna, Ill.
This family was allied with the Lyerly, Hinkle, Olmstead, Crabb and Wardner families in the area.
Virtually any Slack in the area was/is a relation.
Henry & Rachel Slack ran or owned a boarding house in Cairo before moving to Anna. Their child, Richard may have owned or ran a bakery in Anna. Richard Slack also played the role of a policeman in a play held at Millers Opera house held in 1906 to raise money for Benton Hall at Union Academy.
My Grandfather, Fred Slack, was born in Anna in 1891.
My request to this board is for any cemetery, probate, death or business records relating to the Henry & Rachel Slack family, in particular, but also any of the Slack families in the greater Union County area.
I have just about gone nuts looking for their burial records to no avail.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks sooooooooooo much, in advance,

Carl
In balmy Florida
If anyone has access to the 1860 Census records for Union, Co, I am trying to find out the names of the parents of a Cassandra Vaught, born 1853. She later married William T. Brooks in 1870 in Union Co.

I have a census record for 1850 (198b 14-15) that shows a Gilbert and Mary Vaught in Union co., so I suspect they were Cassandra's parents, but I would like to confirm.

Thanks,
Vic

Re: William Mercer (1850) - Union/Pulaski Co. Leona/Lenora

D.R. I am interested in this family because Francis Marion Mercer was the first husband of my gg grandmother Faith Jones. They were married 13 Aug 1861 in Johnson Co., IL. Frank served in the 120th IL Infantry Co. C. Frank and Faithy had two children Francis Marion "Frank" Mercer, Jr. born about 1863 and Albert Mercer born about 1867. Frank, Sr. died in Jan 1868 and Faithy, listed as Sarah Mercer and the two boys were listed in the 1870 census of Johnson Co. two doors from Faithy's brother Nick Jones. Apparently Faithy was named Sarah Jane Faith Jones in some order since she appears with a different one of those names in each census.

On 3 Jul 1872, Faith married her second husband, my gg grandfather Jesse Samuel Hodges and they had one child, my great grandmother Margaret Emaline "Maggie" Hodges, born 26 July 1873. Faithy died in 1875 and Jesse Hodges took his daughter and moved to Christian Co. MO. Maggie told me that her father wanted to bring her two brothers Frank and Albert Mercer along but the family prevailed in convincing him to leave them with family. I would be interested if anyone could tell me about them.

I note that Samuel Briley married Charlotte B. Allen 13 Apr 1851 in Massac Co. IL. Since Charlotte was born before the marriage of Thomas Mercer and Minerva Allen (26 Nov 1835 in Johnson Co.) she was probably a step-daughter to Thomas.

I have not been able to find burial information on any of the Mercer family. Any such information would be appreciated.

My mom said she is buried in a cemetery east of cobden. Is there a Manna Stuber? On ancestry.com it mentioned this name and that she was buried in union county. I'm not sure if this could be the same person.

A 1910 census lists a Curtis W Forrest age 21 wife Eva age 24 with a son John who was 2.

It also lists a boarder. Edward Fuller age 13. I think this boarder was my Grandfather. I am trying to trace my grandfather, I know he was born in Indiana. He told family members that he was an orphan. He died when my mother was 4 years old, so she knew very little about him.

Most of what we know came from my great grandfather, who was his father in law.

If anyone knows anything about Curtis W Forrest or an Edward Fuller that lived in Reynoldsville IL please contact me.

Sandra F

I think we may have some of the same line. My G-Grandmother was Margaret Fritsche/Fritz. She married David Roberts, divorced and later married a Gulley. If i"m not mistaken, she had a child named Woodrow from this marriage.

Thank you so much for the updated information. I'm glad to finally make contact with someone working on my family line. Can you help me with info. on the dates & where did John Carter & Amelia die ? I have searched for years to find out so I can request a death cert. if available on both of them. There is still no evidence of proof that Amelia was a "Armour". I believe there maybe a connection with John Carter to Elizabeth (Carter) Armour.
