I have a 1918 edition of the "Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farmers & Breeders". This is for Will & Southern Cook Counties. The book lists farmers, their family members' names, addresses, phone #'s, cars owned by families, breeds of livestock owned by farmers, etc. I will do look ups for anyone who may have ancestors living on farms in that area in 1918.I'm also researching surnames Hasenjaeger, Sennholtz & Krohn in Will Co. if anyone has any info on those surnames.
I'm trying to locate any information on James Seybert in Will County. James bought land in 1838 and again in 1840. He had land near Wilmington, and the District of Sands. Does anyone know where the District of Sands is located?

How can I find out when and who bought his land?

James seems to disappear after 1840 and he is not in the 1850 Will Co, Il Federal census.

His neighbor was a Andrew Whitten, who sent a letter to the Clerk of Courts to asking and paying for a marriage license for Elizabeth Seybert and Daniel Wing. Andrew wrote this letter on April 22, 1833 in the letter he states the girl has no father and her mother gives her consent.

Does anyone have any information on these famlies?

Thank you to anyone who can help,

Mary

I'm trying to search the 1870 census & have run into a problem--the family I'm tracing was located in Will County, Reed/Reid Township on the 1880 census.

Apparently prior to 1875, this was Clinton Township, which was broken down into smaller localities. This particular area would be the extreme southwestern part of Will county, which is Braidwood.

Without knowing the locality, I'm finding it near impossible to find this family on the 1870 census, when I'm led to believe they were already there.

Does anyone have access to a pre-1875 map that might detail the localities for Clinton Township in Will County that would include Braidwood?

I would truly appreciate any help with this!

She was born between 1837-1839 in MD.

I have been unable to find them in the 1860 census, but they were living in Girard, Trumbull Co, OH for the 1870; in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH for the 1880; and in Joliet, Will Co, IL, for the 1900.

Their children were:
Patrick (1859-1897) m. Sarah HESTER
Mary (1861-?) m1. Thomas MULLIGAN, m2. John GARDNER
Margaret (1864-?) m. John DRUMGOOLE
James (1866-?) m. Bridget McKEOWN
John P. (1868- 1946) m. Mary Ellen BARRY/BERRY
Jane (1870-1872)
Michael (1871-?) m. Minnie McVEY
Andrew (1874-?)
Peter (1879-1905)
Cecelia (1882-1884).

John died 1 January 1910, in Joliet, Will Co, IL. At the time of his father's death, James was living in Cleveland, OH, and the other children were living in Chicago or Joliet, IL.

Is any one aware of WEBBs in Co Mayo, IRL, between 1830-1850? So far I haven’t been successful in finding this John WEBB in passenger lists.
Looking for members of a large clan of Storbeck siblings who came from Mecklenberg, Germany to Will County, IL between about 1850 and 1873 (children of Christian Heinrich "Henry" Christoph Storbeck and Magdalena Maria Elisabeth Stratman). They were Henry (married Fredericka Hagen), Charles, John, William (married Fredericka Lahning), Minnie (married Langamann/Langeman, Sophie (married Steinhauser), Mary (married Frederick Schwieger), and Henrietta (married Nicklaus Younker). Henry was probably one of the first to come over, William and Henrietta the last. Henry died in Will Co, IL (some of his children went to Martin Co, MN) and William died in Cottonwood Co, MN. Would like to find out more about the other siblings and their families. Thanks, Anne

Am looking for the death record or obit for Permelia Rowe Holden. Permelia married Abel E. Holden in December of 1854. Am not sure if Rowe was her maiden name or the name of her previous husband. Permelia died sometime prior to October 1876.

Also looking for the death record of Abel E. Holden's third wife Mira Stone Holden. Mira/Maria married Abel Holden October 1876.

The Holdens lived in the southwest section of Frankfort Township in Will Co. Abel Holden died in 1883 leaving his property to his wife Mira Stone Holden.

Abel Holden's obit indicates he was buried in Frankfort next to his two wives (Amy Cole Holden and Permelia Rowe Holden) near Squire Sanders. Unfortunately we have not been successful in locating the place where he was buried.

POW/MIA KOrean War Will Co. MOLTON, RUZON

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Will County, Illinois as their home of record.

Soldier: JAMES ENOCK MOLTON
Born: 1932 Black
Date of loss: July 5, 1953 MIA

Soldier: FRANK RUZON
Born: 1931 Caucasian
Date of loss: December 3, 1950 KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 112 families from Illinois that have not been located. There are two families from Will County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Postings on other geneaological sites indicate Wheatland Township Cemetery is in poor condition. Wheatland Township cemetery is located on 104th Street, just west of Plainfield-Naperville Road in Naperville (Will County), Illinois. I live about 4 blocks from the cemetery and frequently take walks in it for exercise. I am happy to report that it is a very peaceful and well-maintained cemetery. The grass is mowed every week, the fenceline is kept well-trimmed, the bushes and trees trimmed, etc. It was opened in 1842 and burials continue to be made, even now. Many of the headstones and monuments suggest the individuals are from (or related to) the pioneer families of this area. These families include Birkett, Boughton, Clow and Patterson. I estimate about 400-500 graves (about 20 rows with about 20-30 headstones). Most of the headstones are in excellent condition.

Thomas Clark early breeder of Hereford Cattle

I am researching Thomas Clark, b. 28 Aug. 1842 near Hereford, England, d. between 1920 & 1930 and his wife Margaret (Heal) Clark b. 22 Jun. 1841 Parkham, Devon, England d. after 1930 and their children Annie Alma Clark b. 11 Feb 1873 in Elyria, Lorain, Ohio & d. 13 Sep 1944 in Sycamore, DeKalb, IL; Flora Heal Clark b. abt. 1879 & John H. Clark who probably died young. Thomas Clark first resided in Cleveland, Ohio, then Elyria, Lorain, Ohio (1870 census). They moved to Illinois in 1877 and can be found in Washington Township, Will, IL (1880 & 1900 census)and Beecher Village, Washington Township, Will, IL (1920 census). He emigrated in 1866 & was naturalized in 1877.

Their daughter Annie Alma Clark married Dewitt D. Van Voorhis 19 Dec. 1894 & had the following children: Morris Clark Van Voorhis b. 13 May 1896 d. Dec 1981, Faith Mildred Van Voorhis b. Abt. 1901, Donald Dewitt Van Voorhis b. Abt. 1905, Ferna May Van Voorhis b. Abt. 1910, & Joyce Arleen Van Voorhis b. 10 Aug 1918 d. Mar 1997.

From the Portrait and Biographical Album of Will County, Illinois, Containing Full Page Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens of the County; Chicago: Chapman Bros., 1890:
THOMAS CLARK, a practical and successful breeder of Hereford cattle, is located on a fine farm, one mile northeast of Beecher. It comprises one hundred and twenty acres on section 9, Washington Township, that were selected with a view to their present use, and are adapted by nature and improvement for the purpose. The "Evergreen Stock Farm" is known far and near, and well repays a visit, the owner being thoroughly posted regarding the stock in which he takes such delight. Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the improvements is the commodious stock-barn, 67x97 feet, with a capacity for one hundred head of cattle and a large amount of hay and grain. All the buildings are well-constructed and sufficiently large for the various purposes for which they were designed. The herd at present consists of about sixty head, chief of the herd being Peerless Wilton No. 12,774. At the head of the herd are the fine bulls, Anxiety Third, No. 4466, and Anxiety Wilton, No. 30,272, all registered numbers familiar to stockmen. At the State Fairs held in Peoria, Mr. Clark carried off most of the sweepstakes, and at Buffalo, N. Y., he received $750 in prizes; he justly claims to have carried off more premiums than any other breeder of Herefords in the country. Thomas Clark, Sr., the father of our subject, was born in Herefordshire, England, and came of pure English blood. He grew up in his native shire, and became a breeder of the famous cattle which bear the name of the shire. As a farmer and stock-breeder he was eminently successful, and followed the business during his life, becoming prominent in that line and well known as a good citizen. He passed away in 1862, at the age of seventy-eight years. He had married a lady of his own shire, whose maiden name was Mary A. Fluck. She lived to be more than three-score and ten years old, dying in 1887, in the shire wherein her whole life had been spent. She had borne two sons and four daughters, five of whom lived to mature years, and four are yet alive. The three daughters remain in their native land, and all are married. The parents were members of the Church of England, and the father was Church Warden for many years. The gentleman whose name introduces this biographical notice was born near Hereford, England, August 28, 1842. He was reared amid the surroundings of farm life, and received a common-school education. He was about twenty-one years old when, in 1866, he set sail for America, the land of promise across the Atlantic. From Southampton he crossed to New York, whence he went at once to Cleveland,Ohio. There he learned the trade of a butcher, carrying it on in that city until 1869, and then going to Elyria, Lorain County, where he continued the same occupation for a time. He soon, however, embarked in the enterprise toward which his taste and early training led him—that of breeding Hereford cattle. Having had better advantages than most men who are engaged in the business, to learn the characteristics of the breed and the best means of caring for them, he began under favorable auspices a work that has been crowned with success. In 1877 he purchased and took possession of the now well-known "Evergreen Stock Farm," a part of which with the fine residence is represented by a view on another page. The many good qualities of Miss Margaret Heal won the earnest regard of Mr. Clark, and winning her consent to become his wife, the marriage rites were performed in Elyria, Ohio. Mrs. Clark was born in Devonshire, England, June 22, 1841, and educated in the land of her birth. She was one of ten children born to a Devonshire farmer and his worthy wife, and one of four who came to America. She was about twenty years old when they settled in the Buckeye State. Her parents remained in the mother country, dying there when upwards of four-score years of age. They belonged to the Episcopal Church, in the tenets of which they reared their offspring. Mrs. Clark has borne her husband three children, and the loss of the only son—John H.—has brought sorrow to the parents' heart. The daughters who gladden the home are Anna A. and Flora H. The parents give their adherence to the church in the doctrines of which their progenitors instructed them in youth. Mr. Clark is an independent Republican. Not only for the enterprise he has manifested in his worldly affairs, but for his kindly nature and upright character, he is respected by those who know him, and his estimable companion also holds a high place in the esteem of their associates.
9-15-2007

If there is anyone who can tell me the name of the main newspaper that carries obits for Homer Township (now called LOCKPORT) in Will County?

I know that a Mr. GLENN EGBERT HALEY died May 11, 1977 in Oceanside, California/San Diego County (he was born Aug, 12, 1900 in Chicago) but is most assuredly buried in Hadley Cemetery in Will County. His wife, BERNICE MARIE HALEY is also buried there, and she died January 29, 1990 (and was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Chicago, IL). I'd like to receive a printed copy of the obituaries if they are available.

If anyone can help me find obituary notices or surviving family in the Will County area, I would be most grateful, as there are no obituaries available from the San Diego newspapers. Please respond directly to my e-mail address, keith345@hotmail.com, so as not to clutter up this message board with responses.
Is anyone familiar with Staff Sergeant Charles D. Ginn of Will County, Illinois? Sgt. Ginn was a World War II MIA who was lost in 1944 on the same Army Air Force aircraft as my uncle, 1st Lt. Irwin G. Zaetz. My information is that Sgt. Ginn's father was Mr. William Ginn, 102 First Street, Crete, Illinois. Within the past year, the wreckage of this aircraft was discovered in a remote part of northeastern India. My family is trying to find relatives of the missing crewmen to persuade the Department of Defense to send a recovery team to the site of the wreckage. Any information on Sgt. Ginn would be greatly appreciated.
I need someone to look up the Intention record for Franz Schneider. This would have been in Will County, Ill on Feb 06,1884. He later naturalized, however that was in Wisconsin. Also, would anybody be able to find if there were any deaths of children (possibly another Franz Schneider who would have been born in 1879)? So far we know that my great grandparents had 12 children, however we've only seen proof of 11 and one of the children is listed on the ship manifest coming in to the country in 1881, however he's never listed again. We know that they lived in Will County in 1884, however we believe they moved right after that to Wisconsin.

Joseph was born Feb 12, 1843 in Burlington Co, NJ. I found a Joseph H Gaskill age 26, harmess maker, born in NJ on the 1870 census for town of Joliet, Will Co, IL. All of the information is correct for Marrietta's husband. My question is why was he listed as a convict of the Illinois State Penitentiary? He was a coal miner in 1920 and in 1930 a guard at the state prison in Joliet, IL, later becoming assistant warden. Have not been able to find the date of his death. Need a lookup for obituary, funeral notice, or newspaper clipping. Nellie Smith Atherton died Jan. 9, 1972 and was buried Jan. 12, 1972 at Lockport City Cemetery by undertaker, William Goodale, Jr. of Lockport, IL. Need someone to look and see if Clarence is also buried there...or contact Goodale Funeral Home for information. I wrote them but received no reply.

Hewson & Mary Jane (Johnson) Townill/Townhill were the parents of 13 children and settled in the Plainfield area about 1882. According to various obituaries of some of the children, the family originated in Lincolnshire, England. It is correct that Hewson Sr (1850-1932) was born in Horncastle, Lincs. the son of John & Mary Townhill. In turn John was the son of William & Elizabeth Townhill who resided at Coningsby, Lincs where John and his sister, Maria, were born. Jane Townhill, daughter of Maria & John Fisher, married at Coningsby Thomas Kirman. Thomas and Jane Kirman came to Wheatland Twp, Will Co in 1873, and from 1883 farmed in DuPage Twp till their respective deaths in 1904 and 1912. They are my gg grandparents. Seek contact with descendants of Hewson & Janie Townill.

Could someone tell me if Will Co., IL had a state census in 1885 and 1895, and if so, would it be on microfilm at the genealogical society? Also wondering where I could find the naturalization records of an ancestor (in an old family tree, it stated he became a citizen on March 20, 1878) This would have been in the Joliet area.
Thank you

Conant Family in Will County, Illinois

I am looking for Conants living in Illinois who descended from Amos Conant. My ancestor, Amos Conant, came from Concord Massachusetts in the mid 1700s. He moved to Vermont then New York (Bainbridge). Many of his descendents moved to Illinois in the 1800s and I believe many are still living there today.

I am a descendent of Amos's but my line stayed in Vermont and never moved to NY or Illinois. I am trying to establish a connection between my Vermont ancestors and Amos's Illinois descendants. I am the group moderator at Family Tree DNA for the Conant family. See:

https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=E50236&...

It seems that my Conant line is not related to the Conants descended from Roger Conant of Salem Massachusetts. Amos is listed in the F.O. Conant's book on the Conant family as a Conant whose lineage is uncertain. It looks as if either Amos is not a true Conant or somewhere down the line a woman who married in to my father's Conant line had an affair with another man... At any rate, if I could get in touch with an Illinois Conant descended from this Conant line of descendants:

1. Amos, 2. Abel, 3. Lorenzo Franklin 4. Robert Fletcher 5. Robert F. OR his brother Joseph LaVerne

I do know that the line lived for many years near Joliet, Illinois.

Please contact me at mhconant@yahoo.com

Thank you.

This is my first message, so please forgive the subject line! The vast majority of my maternal family is from Joliet, and all but a few have passed on, mostly in the late 1960's, 1970's and at least one in 1992. Are there any resources I can use to locate these obits? The most important one to me is that of my Mother: Barbara (BURRESS)Ekdahl, b.27 December 1923, Joliet/IL/Will and d. 26 March 1968 in Corpus Christi/TX/Neuces. She was buried in Oakwood cemetery in Joliet. Thanks in advance!

Samuel and Emily Goodrich VT>DuPage Township 1850>MN 1860

I'm just working on a few peripheral family members, and wonder if anyone has any knowledge of Samuel and Emily Goodrich who lived in DuPage Township, Will Co, IL in 1850.

Samuel and Emily Goodrich appear in the 1850 Census of the township of DuPage in Will County, Illinois. Samuel is listed as a farmer. Their children: S. Augustin, 23; Allen S., 21; James H., 17; Ruth M., 14. Also in the house are Abigail Standish, 12, and Emana (?) C. Standish, 7. Both Samuel and Emily Goodrich were born in Vermont. Samuel was b. about 1802, and Emily was born about 1812. Could Emily Goodrich be the sister of Cyrus Adams?

Cornelius Adams, son of Cyrus Adams and Mary Sabin, was born about 1850 in Naperville,IL. Mary Sabin Adams died May 31, 1851.

In the 1860 Census, Cornelius Adams is living with father and step-mother, Cyrus and Ellen E. Adams, in Placerville, CA, June 1860, and with Samuel and Emily Goodrich in Bloomington, Hennepin Co, MN, in the Nov. 1860 and in the 1870 Census.

In the 1870 Census, Cornelius also appears in 4th Ward of St. Anthony, Hennepin Co.,MN, as a student of ministry.

Allen Family from Joliet

My Great Grandmother, Pearl Estella ALLEN, was born in Joliet, IL, on November 19, 1893. I am searching for her father's name, and think it might be in the 1895 Illinois State Census, in the city of Joliet. I am out of state and don't have access to these records, and would be most grateful if someone could find this information for me. I believe Pearl's mothers name was Gertrude. I found this in the 1900 Federal Census for the city of Joliet, which shows Pearl as having three younger brothers, Joseph (born 1895,) Thomas (born 1897,) and Robert (born 1900.) There is no male listed in the household, so I would guess her father died in late 1899 or early 1900.

Her father was connected to a large family of ALLEN's that moved to Rush County, KS, from Will County and Kankakee County, IL. I have a great deal of information on these Kansas ALLEN's, but I've not been able to figure out exactly how her father connects to them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am writing to request information on a possible marriage in your county for my gr-grandparents, Alfred Cuykendall (1840-1894) + Phillipina Sutter (1842-1907). He moved to Illinois with his family from New York some time in the mid to late 1850s; in the 1860 federal census, he is living with his mother Elizabeth Taylor in Aux Sable. Phillipina immigrated from Germany in that same time frame. By 1862, they were married and had their first child.

One undocumented reference on the Internet indicated that he may have married in Will county. They lived primarily in Morris but Alfred had an unknown connection in Joliet and surrounding communities as he went there to visit often and periodically to live. For example, when he enlisted in the 64th Illinois Infantry Volunteers in 1864, he declared himself to be a resident of Joliet. Grundy County Historical Society confirmed that they did not marry there. Can some kind soul verify if they possibly married in Will County sometime between 1860-1862? Thank you in advance.
