Opal Nichols dies
Opal Nichols, 86, of 711 Park Drive, Marion, the former operator of the Nichols Grocery on West Main Street in Marion, died at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 1976, in the Creal Springs Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 3, 1890, in McCormick, to Elisha and Alice Jane Browning Reagan. She married Leonard E. Nichols in McCormick on April 8, 1908.
The Nichols came to Marion in 1918 and opened Nichols Grocery. Mrs. Nichols operated it after her husband died in 1943, and until her retirement in 1956.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion, the Le Roy A. Chapter 350 of the Order of the Easter Star, the Past Worthy Matrons Club and served on several committees while active in the Easter Star.
Survivors are two daughters, Edna Watchell of Marion and Marjalyce Dedman of Elkton, Md.; two sisters, Gladys James of Rosewell, Ga., and Edith Winstead of Herrin; three grandsons, James E. Dedman III of Wilmington, Del., Robert Dedman of Long Island, N.Y., and Del Nichols Watchell of Fort Worth, Tex.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Four sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Marion. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
