Parents for Sula Appleton, 1861 - 1960, m. Wm Russell

Classification: Query
Sula's father may have been John Appleton, who married Harriet Henry in 1866, but I'm pretty sure Harriet wasn't her mother, because

1) Most men married the girl back then.
2) Harriet has 2/1 in 1900, and both are accounted for.
3) She is out of order in 1870.

Slim clues, I know. This is what I have found. Anyone know more?

1870, Township 9 Range 3, Williamson, Illinois

Appleton, John, 33, Ark [Tenn]
Appleton, Harriet, 32, Ill
Appleton, Joan, 3, Ill
Appleton, Sallie, 8, Ill
Deloach, Mary, 25, Ill, domestic servant
Freeman, Jas, 18, Ill, farm labor

[Joan dies before 1880. Note "Sallie" comes after her. Mary DeLoach is from the family next door. Jas is John's half-brother, James.]

1880, Bainbridge, Williamson, Illinois

Appleton, J. W. F, 43, head, Tenn, Tenn, Tenn
Appleton, Hosett, 42, wife, Ill
Appleton, Sulia, 18, dau, Ill, Tenn, Ill
Appleton, Martha E, 9, dau, Ill, Tenn, Ill
Chenoweth, Elizebe, 76, Ky

She weds:
Russell, William to Appleton, Sula
04 Sep 1881, Williamson Co

1900, Carterville, Williamson, Illinois

Russell, William, head, Oct 1855, Ill, Ill, Ill, carpenter
Russell, Sulay, wife, Jun 1856 [Whoops!], Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Cora, dau, Oct 1889, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, James G, son, May 1891, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, William C, son, Feb 1895, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Grace, dau, Sep 1898, Ill, Ill, Ill

They have been married for 17 years.
Sula has a number that looks like the bottom half of an "H", but isn't "11", for children borne, and 5 for children surviving.

Same year, John and Harriet Appleton

1900, Bainbridge, Williamson, Illinois

Apleton, John, head, Jan 1837, Tenn, Tenn, Tenn, farmer
Apleton, Harriett, wife, Dec 1837, Ill, Ky, Ky
Apleton, Marthy E, dau, Jun 1871, Ill, Ill, Tenn
They have been married for 33 years.

Harriet has borne 2 children, but only 1 lives, which, if accurate, tells us we were probably right about Joan and Sula. Joan was 3 in 1870 and missing in 1880, so I assumed she had died. Sula (Sallie) was listed after the core family in 1870, which hinted that she was either John's from a previous marriage, Harriet's from a previous marriage or some sort of orphaned niece/cousin they took in. If Harriet is really 2/1, that eliminates the possibility Sula is Harriet's from a previous marriage, leaving open she is John's or an orphaned relative.

1910, Carterville, Williamson, Illinois

Russell, William, head, 53, Ill, Ill, Ill, packer, house
Russell, Sula, wife, 44, Ill, Tenn, Tenn
[Indexed as "Lula"]
Russell, Cora, dau, 21, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Grial, son, 18, Ill, Ill, Ill
[Indexed as "Trial", looks like "Grial" in the image.]
Russell, William, son, 15, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Fanny, dau, 12, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Gusse, dau, 8, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Bertusham, gr-son, 2, Ill, Ill, Ill

Cora there is single, but she has 1/1 for children borne and living, so odds are Bertusham is hers.

1920, Carterville, Williamson, Illinois

Russell, William, head, 64, Ill, Ill, Ill, miner, coal
Russell, Sula, wife, 56, Ill, Tenn, Tenn
Russell, Cora, dau, 31, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Treat, son, 28, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Willie, son, 24, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Augusta, dau, 18, Ill, Ill, Ill

1930, Carterville, Williamson, Illinois

Russell, William, head, 75, Ill, Ill, Ill, laborer, coal mine
Russell, Sarah, wife, 68, Ill, Ill, Ill
Russell, Carrie, dau, 41, Ill, Ill, Ill, none
Russell, Treat, son, 38, Ill, Ill, Ill, examiner, automobile factory
Russell, William, son, 35, Ill, Ill, Ill, laborer, coal mine

1940, Carterville, Williamson, Illinois

McDawell, William head, 84, 6th grade, Ill
McDawell, Sula, wife, 78, 6th grade, Ill
Russel, James, son, 47, 8th grade, Ill, Foreman
Russel, Carl, son, 44, 6th grade, Ill, married
Russel, Ethyl, dau-in-law, 36, 8th grade, Ill

William's MIDDLE name is "McDowell". The enumerator used it for some reason. Carl there, husband of Ethyl, is really William Carl, undoubtedly using "Carl" to distinguish himself from his father.
