There is an index to some Morgan Co. probates on the MAGA website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilmaga/index2.html
There are also online at FamilySearch.org under Illinois Probates. The images are browse-able so you can choose Morgan and then the correct index book. In addition, the LDS microfilmed records can be ordered through FamilySearch. Last but not least, you can find out if there is a probate or will for him from the Circuit Clerk's office or the Jacksonville Genealogy Society. Good luck!

It does say her father signed for her but icalled and asked for that paperwork and they said they sent me all they had. I live in texas now so everything is through the mail or computer. I recently sent to illinois menard county where they were married to look for death or divorce records because her husband married someone else in 1883. I cannot find anything on thier daughter Lourena either when she was young only after she married. her death certificate lists only andrew hill as her parents but her marraige license says laura m johnson was her mother. How confusing this can all be. thank you for your reply....ruth

If she was only 14 then her father or other relative would have needed to give consent for her marriage. I don't know if you already know who her father was, but if not, I suggest getting a copy of her marriage record and ask that all pages that might exist be provided to you. I believe they are on LDS films and you could look at it yourself that way.

Hopefully this will come as exciting news to you: I have a history of The Huffaker Family compiled by Ione Adamson Nolan in 1966. And I have a whole page about David Milburn and his wife Eliza, who was the cousin of Michael Lee Huffaker b.1800 Ky.Don't know how old you are, but you could even be named in this book, or at least your parent. Michael Huffaker established Woodlawn Farm in Morgan County Illinois in 1824. It has come to be discovered as an Underground Railroad site, and I am a tour-guide for the house and "farm" of 10 acres. I am thrilled that I have some info for you. My email is memawcrim@hotmail.com. PLEASE contact me.
Looking for information on John D Watts, born about 1825 (per census information) in Tennessee. Married Frances Jane Clampett in 1848 (per family records) in Jefferson County, Illinois. Lived in area as far as we can tell especially in Morgan County. They had many children: Harriet, Sarah, James, Hester, William, Elisa, F Anna and Charles L. (my great grandfather). A bit confusing because there seems to also be a Dr. John D Watts living in the area who was from England, but could be a relative to ours.

I can trace Frances' background but just have not been able to find anything on John David. Any help appreciated. Thanks so much for your time.
McHenry Johnston of Bond County Illinois
------
From Illinois Statewide Marriage Index (Johnson as spelled)
JOHNSON, MCHENRY GILMORE, MARGARET 1820-11-05 A 109 BOND
JOHNSON, MCHENRY RUTHERFORD, NANCY 1823-01-22 A 112 BOND
=======
From Mt. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church & Cemetery History 1819-1993 by Gerald E. Jenner
From Pg 108 James Johnston family
"James Johnston was born between 1760 and 1770. His wife's name was Jane...
The earliest land records available to Wanda Buss, who researched his family, indicate that he acquired land 20 Oct 1817 in Sec 7, Twn 5 N, Range 3 W of the 3rd Principal Meridian. That is the section in which Mt. Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church is located... The known children of James and Jane Johnston, Sr. wer: James, Jr.; John C; and Sarah M. (or H.) Johnston. Zillah and McHenry Johnston were living in Bond County when Mt. Gilead Church was organized. They were involved with the church and the community and they may have been members of the James Johnston family. However, neigher of them were listed in the wills of either James or Jane Johnston."

More of this family and the children are discussed between pages 108 and 114. I found this book in the Independence Missouri Midwest Genealogy Center. I believe the book can be found for sale online.

From Pg 114 McHenry Johnston
"McHenry Johnston in the age range of 16-26 was living in Ripley Township at the time of the 1820 census. Like Zillah (Johnston) Comer, he may not have been a child of James and Jane Johnston, Sr., but there is some evidence that he might have been, even though he was not listed in the will of either James or Jane Johnston. He was old enough to vote in the first election held in Bond County at Perrysville in 1817. He is one of ninety-one men who voted to choose three men to represent Bond County at a meeting to form the state government of Illinois. On 5 Nov 1820 he married Margaret Gilmore. She was between 20 and 25 years of age. She was a daughter of Judge John anad Eleanor Gilmore. She died at the age of about 25 years and she was buried in the Gilmore plot in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, along with her father, who was a Bond County Treasurer and Judge, her mother, Eleanor, and her sisters, Martha, Jane D., and Polly (Gilmore) Rutherford, wife of James B. Rutherford, the first hat maker in Greenville who started making hats in 1822. On 23 Jan 1823, McHenry Johnston married Nancy Rutherford. She was probably a sister of James B. Rutherford, but her relationship to James B. Rutherford is not known."
==================
James B. Rutherford (b. 1795 Lincoln Co. KY, married Polly Kelly Gilmore in Christian County Kentucky July 12, 1817.)
James B. Rutherford was my great-grandfather (my great-grandmother, his 2nd wife Jane Grigg Jay, married Sept.30, 1846).
The Gilmores and Rutherfords were in Bond before the 1820 census. Both families are mentioned numerous times in the history of Bond County Illinois. While James B. did have a sister named Nancy; that Nancy had married a Stephen Murphy and seems to have remained in Adair Co. KY. Allen Comer, husband of Zillah Johnston, was a witness to the will of James B. Rutherford.
All of these Gilmores, Rutherfords, Comers, and Johnstons are found connected to Mt. Gilead Presbyterian Church.

James B. Rutherford also had a brother named William. In 1819 Green Co. KY (next door to Adair) a William Ruthford (sic) married a Nancy Miller. I have been unable to track or prove the connection, but I believe that this Nancy could have been the widow of William Rutherford; and as such was the sister-in-law of James B. Rutherford, and the Nancy who married McHenry Johnston.
The document from the Bond County clerk does not indicate that Nancy Rutherford had been previously married.... nor does it indicate that McHenry Johnson was presiously married.
I been trying to sort this out for some time. i guess there is no way to know who doras father,my great grandfather really is. Troublesomme it is my direct line.

PS: to my earlier post-- I found the Bingman family in Alexander, Morgan, Illinois in the 1900 Fed census but "Keen" is listed as "Chas" instead and some other details were changed including the number of years they reported being married (8) and the year of birth for Dora (1893 instead of 1892). Seems like they were trying to make it seem as though they'd been married in 1892 and Dora was born the next year.
Perhaps the 1910 Fed Census for Peoria, IL contains some clues.

It lists Keen Bingman 34, Lorena Bingman 32, Dora Bingman 17, Viola Bingman 15, Lizzie King, 36, sister to head of household, widowed. At Dora's birth, Lorena would have been a mere 15 and Keen Bingman 16 (birthdate Feb 1876 IL) They state they have been married 10 years, less than the ages of the two daughters. Number of marriages for Keen is written "1" on the original document and "2" for Lorena. Lorena reports that she had given birth to 2 children and had 2 children living.

If Viola was born during the years her mother was married to Mr. Starner, she is likely his biological daughter. Though it is not clear who was the biological father of Dora, if Keen were the father, at 16 he wouldn't have been in a position to marry Lorena, but might have wanted to do so. Because Dora always went by the Bingman name, it may signify a close connection, either emotionally or biologically.

Also see the 1900 Fed census for Alexander, Morgan, Illinois: Kern Bingham, 24, boarder is listed as single, but is the right age and has his father and mother born in the right places (Kentucky and Indiana, respectively.) Where were Lorena, Dora and Viola in the 1900 census?
If she lived long enough to have a social security card, then you could send to the Soc Sec Admin for her SS application. This would most likely have been completed by her in the early 1940's and she would have entered her birth date, place, and both of her parents' names, etc. Do it soon because the SS Admin is trying to restrict genealogists' access to this information. Also, be sure that in Morgan County they not only checked the original birth records but checked the delayed birth certificates which had to be submitted when social security came to be. The county clerk's often don't like to search those because they are not usually indexed very well and are more chronological in the order filed rather than by surname so can be tricky. Good luck!

I cannot find a birth record for dora starner either. Any ideas on what to do now would be appreciated

Your thought of Laura M Johnson Hill no longer living at the time of her daugtgher's 1892 marriage may be accurrate.

One more record that may interest you is the marriage record of Andrew T Hill to Martha 'Cline' in Menard Co IL on 31 March 1883.

Their (Andrew and Martha's) daughter, Etta Lee Hill was born per Etta's death record in Oakford (Menard Co) IL on 24 May 1887. Etta married John E Shephard. Etta appears in the Tillman Hill/Malaha Elizabeth 1900 home in Brown Co IL census along with two of the son's of Malaha from Mahala's previous marriages (Wells and Nation). Etta's death record list her parents as Andrew Hill and Martha 'Kline'.

As Etta and her sister , Mary Hill, both are living with their father (Andrew Tillman Hill) in 1900 and Andrew is on wife #3, it would appear that Etta and Mary's mother, Martha Cline/Kline could have died also. Unfortunately death records for the females in the 1800's were not routine so finding places of death and dates can be a struggle. Sometimes you can find clues in items such as guardianship records, cemetery transcriptions ect.

You might ask for a volunteer look-up for Andrew's 1927 obit in both the Peoria area and the Springfield area. It's possible it could give a glimpse of Andrew's life with more clues to follow up on.

Good luck to you.

I am trying to find any newspaper or other records relating to wagon trains formed in 1852-1853. My ancestors Jacob Huffaker 1808-1867 along with several of his minor and aduly children and son in law David Milburn left Morgan County Ill. For Texas during this time period. From what I've read the huffakers were rather prominent and i thought their departure might merit mention in the local newspaper. If anyone has some idea which newspapers might have been published in that time period and locale and where i might access or contact someone for help it would be greatly appreciated.

Elizabeth was Mahala Elizabeth and Andrew was her 3rd husband. (1st Wells, 2nd Nation)... two sons from the previous marriages appear on the Brown Co IL 1900 census with the couple. The couple is in Sangamon Co in 1910 (on this one she is listed as Mahala and he has been transcribed as "Andrew F Hill, census record to my personal reading of image view is 'T', as it appears differently than the others on census with an 'F') On the 1910 there is a little box section where # of marriage was asked. For this couple "M2" appears. I would not take that number as accurate as other records indicate this is at least her 3rd and possible 3rd for Andrew also

Andrew Tillman Hill signed, but does it actually indicate that Laura M Johnson Hill is still living in 1892? If listed as mother only it does not indicate the woman is still living. Andrew though through signature is still alive. Andrew appears on census records through 1920 and then his death record in 1927. He’s buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Sangamon Co IL. You can see a recording of Andrew Tillman Hill as buried in this cemetery via the Illiniois Digital Archives. He’s in Oak Ridge Cemetery Interment Records volume 5 page 195.

Mahala Elizabeth (Higgenbottom …sp? I've seen several spellings for this) Wells Nation Hill is also buried in this cemetery. (Volume 6 page 70) and her death record is online both viewable through Family Search or Ancestry.

You'll notice on Andrew Tillman Hill's online trascription that his spouse is listed as 'McHaley' , either a bad reading and/or poorly spelled by informing person. According to the Oak Ridge Records Andrew was living at 1009 5th Ave, Peoria, Peoria County IL at death. According to the online death record he has been in this area for two years.

Also see Mahala's 1st record (Mahala "Higgenbottom" to John "Welles" 30 Sept 1869 Sangamon Co). Second to a Nation also Sangamon Co IL in July 1880. She appears as without a spouse on the 1880 Sangamon Co census.

On Mahala Elizabeth's son, Grover Nation (from 2nd marriage) he list his mother 'Mahalia Hill' of Sangamon Co IL was his nearest relative. His birth on WW1 registration card states his birth as 22 May 1886

The one person I can not yet find trace of on 1880 is the little girl Laurena Hill herself. If mother is still living she may be listed under a different surname of a possible mother remarriage (happens often) or she may be with a grandparent of either of her parents (or a brother/sister of either parent) and again listed not as Laurena/Lorena Hill.

After Andrew’s marriage to Laura M Johnson in Menard Co IL on 8 April 1875 there are several records that could be a second marriage for the gentleman. What I do not see as of yet is his final marriage record to Mahala Elizabeth. I don’t have time to dig any more at present, but based on the information you have provided as Laurena Hill Starner Bingman’s father being Andrew Tillman, the above is Andrew Tillman and his wife Mahala Elizabeth Higgenbottom Wells Nation Hill basic starting ground.
Have you ordered the marriage applications for both the 1892 Starner marriage and the 1899 Bingman marriage. The applications should list the brides parent/s and her place of residence at time of applying for marriage license.

It would be a more 'current' possible source of information over the lady's death record. Any record is only as good as the person giving the information...thus sometimes the closer you get to an actual event the more accurate information becomes.

If you order, you want more than the certificate, you wish to seek the application. You might also desire to have the civil cases in the county reviewed for the divorce records (same of these can be quite enlightening as to what all has/is happening in the household).

You also may wish to go a bit earlier in civil cases to see if there is something pre the 15 Sept 1892 between Laurena and Mr Starner. I'm not saying there will definately be something there, but with Dora being born prior to the actual marriage there is a possible that there is a courthouse trail leading up to this marriage.

You have a 'mystery' to unravel here, a death record or an obituary in your case (nor a simple census record) is going to do the unraveling for you in seeking deeper into what it is you actually wish to learn.
You would probably need to post to Morgan County instead of this board.

STORNER, ANDREW HILL, LORINA 1892-09-15 D 72 5629 MORGAN Co

Alvin Hill born IL May 1867 married Laura A Starner 25 Dec 1889 Morgan Co sister of Andrew Starner and lived in Arcadia village, Morgan Co 1900 census. Alvin was son of Wm M and Ellen Hill and Lorena was not his sister.

BINGMAN, KEEN STARNER, LOURINA MRS 1899-08-30 D 176 7762 MORGAN Co

STARNER, ANDREW MILLER, MARY (MRS) 1903-03-20 D 232 8887 MORGAN

BAKER, WILLIAM & BINGMAN, DORA 1912-04-08 C 22 8488 MENARD

Dora and Viola would be "Starner's" not Bingman's even though they are listed with the Bingman surname and yes both girls were Lorina's and she stuck to the first marriage year of 1892 on the 1900 census. "Lorina/Lorena" Hill is not found in Morgan Co 1880 census.

It may also be that Lorena and Andrew Starner divorced unless there were 2 from Morgan Co IL.

Lorena's death certificate may not have correct information as far as her father's first name. I assume that Keen Bingman was the informant. There is no evidence of an Andrew Hill in Morgan county.

This was the only "Lorena" listed in 1880 census in Morgan county. My grandmother dora bingman was born in 1892 and her sister viola in 1894. i found record of andrew lorena and viola starner. also keen and lorina and dora bingman. I think its complicated and im trying to figure out if my grandfather is keen or andrew or if lorena is even doras mother. My records say dora was born in kane county but they have no record of her birth. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for this belated response I can share alot of specific 28th Ill. Volunteers Regiment history, like where they fought and many particulars. Battle of Shiloh[Pittsburg Landing] the 28th was encamped near famed Blood Pond and was called into the Peach Orchard for the first days battle. Medal of Honor was granted to two 28th Vols. after first days battle. General Albert S. Johnson was wounded/killed directly across from 28th Regiment position and many later claims were made that the 28th Rgmt. halted his final attempt to charge these Federal forces. 28th Regiment was a part of the 'Fightin'Fourth Division that formed part og 'Grant's Last Line' at the Pittsburg Landing which held until the end of the first days fighting.

I am at a wall. Lydia (Lidia) H? Ogdon b May 1841 married Pleasant Hall Mask 18 Jul 1858 in AR. The 1900 census has her living with her son William Jacob Mask and daughter in-law Nancy J. The census shows her parents as father born in Illinois and mother born in Indian Territory. I cannot figure out how to identify her parents based upon this. Any ideas?

I contacted Bond County Clerk and received a copy of original marriage record McHenry Johnson & Margaret Gilmore Nov 5th, 1820 by William Hunter.[Immediately below McHenry's name is a Benjamin Johnson & Rebecca Plant April 15, 1820 ... relationship to McHenry is unknown][Only 10 marriages conducted by William Hunter, Minister Methodist Episcopal Church in Bond County, IL between 1820-21]

Marriage record of McHenry Johnson & Nancy Rutherford, January 23, 1823 by Abraham Williamson, Bond Co, IL was a transcription. I did ask the clerk to pay particular attention to the year.

NOTE: Bond County, IL in 1817 was 26 miles wide and extended north to the "Wisconsin line"! Only 11 counties in IL at that time.

Hi, I am answering your Ancestry message of 2011 which have just discovered in my messages. Have no idea why it just showed up now.
I would love to compare notes with you on the Baar and Brontsema family names. My G-G-Grandmother maiden name was Brontsema. I checked my tree and found Jan & Jantje. Jan was the son of Bene Siewert Baar who was the son of Siewert Benes Baar who was the son of my G-G-Grandfather and mother Bene Hindriks Baar and Hilje Willems Brontsema. I have sezrched for years to find the death place of Hilje. Last place I found her was in Chicago in 1900 living with my G- Grandfather, Simen Benes Baar her son and brother to Siewert.

Feel free to correspond on regular email. donald7216@att.net

Donald Baar

(*as an aside, very pretty photo of Roxy you posted above!)

Just commenting in the intention of being helpful in organizing 'source' note as you gather them: while the book notes the marriage date of 1865 for Stephen to Elizabeth Johnson, in your records file you may also want to make notation that the IL State Marriage Rolls Database gives this marriage as 10 April 1866 in Morgan Co IL , volume C, page 28, license # 1137. In keeping in mind then that both the transcription of bio clips and the transcription of marriage rolls are both have been typed by human for online information, if you question one or the other of dates as they do not 'match', the actual marriage license and/or the orginal printing of the book should be reviewed to assure which source is accurate. (typing errors do happen)
