For those who have not already discovered the site, there are free census transcriptions for Indiana counties at www.us-census.org/states/indiana.

These transcriptions are very useful to researchers who do not have access to images. They can also be useful to researchers who do have access to images because in many cases, they are prepared by people do research in the areas they are transcribing, and they are able to provide a more accurate index of names.

These transcriptions have been done by volunteers who work for free and provide their work at no charge, and the number of transcriptions available depends upon the number of volunteers willing to do the work. Because of this, only a few census years are available for Crawford County.

If you do research in Indiana, be sure to check and see if there are transcriptions available for the areas you are researching. Also, PLEASE consider volunteering to do a transcription, even if it's only one township. Your work can help hundreds, if not thousands, of your fellow researchers.
Since an obit is not available, could someone help me to find a paragraph or so about Robert Sumter's life?
I have family tree information about his 1st wife, Lucretia Kinnett, and his 2nd wife, America Myers Summers. I really would like a summary of his life, especially since I was hoping that an obit would have that information.
He served in the Civil War. I found two Robert Sumters, with very close date of births, who both served in the Civil War.
Any suggestions or ideas to share?
Thank you,
Glenda Magsam

Glenda Magsam --
Robert Sumpter, b. 25 Dec 1829, d. 6 Aug 1912 (Civil War Veteran) is buried in Cedar Cemetery at Leavenworth. Though some people call it Cedar Hill Cemetery, the property deed lists it as Cedar Cemetery. A Cedar Hill Cemetery is in Harrison Co.
His widow, America (Myers) Cummings is buried in Fredonia Cemetery, near her first husband, and other family members.
DBL
Dear Jane,

As a young boy growing up in Brazil, Indiana I was very blessed to, on many occasions, have exchanges with your mother. My mother, Sherri, would often drive her to Indianapolis to the airport, and being fascinated with her travels, would often ride along in the back seat. I remember many amazing conversations with your mother about her many world travels, art, music, and life. I remember staring, for what seemed hours, at her "Americana" series of paintings. I could go on all night about how wonderful your mother treated my mother and I. As I recall, I even had the pleasure of meeting you once, as well.

One final note, I'm not sure how it came into my possession, but hanging in a place of prominence in my foyer is a pen and ink drawing by your mother, of an engraving by Rembrandt of "Joseph Telling His Dream"....

Thank you for your rememberances, and I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

There are many who have only #'s...like you said..if the headstones were gone or unmarked...then they got a #.
I have family buried there...Let me know specifics...I live close by and it is a beautiful area.,...I'll take pics for you if you would like. There is a newer Wickliff Cemetery also I can check. Just need names and dates if possible...
Glad to help
Mary Ellen
Deborah --
Re: Guardian Bonds
A guardian must be bonded, appointed by the court, and responsible to manage the rights and property of another person, such as a minor, or a person incapable of managing his own affairs for some reason (idiot, lunatic, spendthrift, habitual drunkard, etc.)
A guardian may be chosen by a child over 14, or by appointment of the court, if under 14.
Guardianship records may be found in the probate court record books or in separate books named as guardian bond books. Minor heirs were not considered capable by law of managing their own persons or properties, therefore a guardian might be appointed, usually in the county of the ward's residence.
It was not always necessary for parents to be deceased for a guardian to be appointed. Children might be left a legacy by a grandparent or other relative, or might be eligible for a veteran's survivor pension. A natural parent or another person might be appointed guardian.
Guardian bond records can be a valuable genealogy tool when naming the ward, age, and parent's name.
Doris Leistner
I am looking for a john thompson who died in 1952. I also would like to know do you have a Mahala Thompson that is listed in one of the cemetaries. She died in 1899. She was my great grandmother. Supposedly was to be born around 1880. I am trying to figure out if the one John Thompson who died was married to a mahala thompson at first. He was the one who died in 1967. There is a John Thompson that was married to a Catherine Hedden also. I am so confused with all of this so do you know if any of these were married before and I thank you very much. I am also trying to find the website that has all of the pictures of the graves but I forgot where it was at. Could it be there is another John Thompson but it's spelled a different way? Can you send a list of all of the John Thompsons and thanks again.

I have cemetery books for all the townships in Crawford County, and if your people had headstones, they may be listed.

My cemetery index book does not show a Crawford Cemetery.

Also, if you visit the Crawford County Historical and Genealogical Society website, the society has put up several of the cemeteries along with pictures of headstones.

Re: Sinclair G. Sturgeon buried in Sinclair Cemetery outside of Wickliff>>

Hi Mary Ellen - Thank you for your offer to help.
Yes, there were several cemeteries that were moved when they built the reservoir and flooded the area. I was told that some of the smaller cemeteries were left behind and flooded over, and if a grave didn't have a headstone or couldn't be identified, they left that grave behind too. If there was a headstone, but the coffin and contents were in bad shape, the workers just picked up a handful of dirt from the burial place and re-buried that in the new cemetery with the headstone.

I was also told that when the lake was created, the water was so clear that if you took a boat out onto the lake and looked down to the bottom, you would be able to see the mailboxes and buildings still standing.

There are many trees on Ancestry with Sinclair Sturgeon in them and it appears some have the wrong middle name for Sinkler. His middle initial was "G".

While he is allegedly the son of Nancy and Obediah Sturgeon, I am of the suspicion that Sinkler may have been born out of wedlock to one of Nancy's oldest daughters and the father was a Sinclair from Kentucky, who was also related to the Orange/Crawford/Dubois County Sinclair families.

Microfilm readings of cemetery transcriptions at the State Library in Indianapolis for the Sinclair Cemetery have many details next to the names of the people interred in the original cemetery. Notes next to the name of Sinkler G. Sturgeon state that he was buried next to Pleasant and Mary Sinclair and that he was living with them. This is either a coincidence or really strong circumstancial evidence that indicates that he was the son of a Sinclair and a member of that immediate Sturgeon family.

Obediah and Nancy separated or divorced and Nancy was living in Newton Stewart with several of her children, one who married an Alcorn, while Obediah was back in Kentucky.

Sinkler Sturgeon's dates according to the headstone in the cemetery are:
born May 30, 1851
died May 10, 1873
