I visited the Chickamauga National Battlefield a couple of weeks ago seeking info on the 38th Indiana. I was please to find a monument had been erected for this unit. This unit was organized by Benjamin Scribner in New Albany. It was composed of men from Crawford and surrounding counties. I was also pleased to learn that there are several books that can be obtain that give the history of this unit and the Army of the Cumberland. If you are heading south on I-75 it is definitely worth a stop. Located just a few miles south of Chattanooga.

Does anyone have any information regarding Hayworth Cemetery in Milltown IN? My grandfather, James Oliver Dooley (b. 15 Feb. 1891) died in an auto accident on 5 Aug. 1934 when a speeding auto ran a stop sign and plowed into the Dooley family vehicle as they were returning home from church. My grandfather was the only fatality. His son (and my father) William Pell Dooley was 11 yrs. old at the time. James Oliver Dooley was burried at Hayworth Cemetery but I haven't been able to locate any information on it. Perhaps the name changed? I have the newspaper article about the accident that my aunt Mary Dooley Creech gave me years ago. I appreciate any info you would be willing to share with me. Beverly Dooley Cobb

He married Sarah Hubbard in 1846, and they were in Mississippi by the time their first child was born. I have a photo of Autie wearing a uniform, and I'm curious what type of uniform it is. I'd like to know when and why he moved to Mississippi. I know that he had a brother named Lorenzo Wilson who died in the Civil War. I would love to learn more about the Wilsons of Crawford County.

Burials in Crawford County

I am searching for cemetery information on my ggg-grandfather, Elijah ROBERSON (19 Feb 1842, Crawford County, Indiana - 07 Mar 1908, Great Bend, Kansas). I have located the obituary and funeral records for him and they just simply state that he was returned to Indiana for burial. His first wife was Sarah Emma GRAVES (10 Jul 1855-09 Apr 1882). His second wife was Nancy S. VANWINKLE (14 Oct 1845-04 Jan 1870). Elijah also had several children who died in infancy: Infant, 11 Sep 1875; Isaac A., 23 Mar 1877-11 Aug 1878; Mary Anna Bell, 18 Apr 1865-17 Aug 1866. Any information would be wonderful.

I am also searching for two ENGLEMAN burials in Crawford County, most likely in Whiskey Run Township. Martha Isabelle ENGLEMAN, 01 Dec 1860-29 Apr 1896. And her daughter, Nellie Mabel ENGLEMAN, 01 Dec 1894-03 Apr 1896. This is my great-great-grandmother and her daughter. Family legend has it they died as the result of a house fire. I cannot substantiate this claim, but since they died so close together, it would seem reasonable.

I was sent a photo that was taken on my great-uncle, Torrence St. Clair's farm, in Birdseye/Eckerty area in the 1940s. I am attaching a copy of the photo to this post.

I know who three of the children are, maybe four. The tall girl in the back on the far right is Wilma Jean St. Clair Walker, who died a few years ago. Standing in front of Wilma Jean is my aunt, and the boy in the back row middle with dark hair is Edison St. Clair. My aunt does not know who the other kids in the picture are.

Does anyone from this area recognize any of these children?

Issac B and Mary margarett were 2 of their children that were also born in Indiana. By 1850 they had moved to Missouri and Wingate had remarried.

Looking for information on my ggrandfather Thomas H. Hueston. He was born in Crawford county,IN March 2, 1864, married Sarah Ann Wininger March 7,1886 in Crawford county and died December 21,1939 in Orange county IN. I have information on his marriage and descendants. I found a Thomas Huston, age 6 in the 1870 Crawford county census with parents named Thomas and Susan. There were also several siblings, Elizabeth, Noah, Ellen, Allis, David and Martha. I can't find them in 1880 and have not found anything else about them. Does anyone know anything about Thomas Huston in Crawford county?

Can anyone tell me how the Parr and Riley families of Alton, Indiana are connected? My husband's family owns a home in Alton that previously belonged to the Riley family. The house has been in the Parr family for several years. The last person to live in the house was Nellie Parr. Nellie Parr was Chauncey Parr's mother. Other relatives include Rosemary Parr (Chauncey's wife), Ralph E. Parr, Berton Parr, and Percy Parr. I am unsure of the names of the Riley family. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

What efforts are underway in Crawford County to compile information on WW II and the contributions and stories from Crawford County? Last Fall I watched the outstanding Ken Burns documentary "The War" and started inquiring about Milltown and Marengo residents who served in WW II. There are few living veterans left. We should be interviewing them all to capture their stories and post them to for future generations. Is there interest in a project of this nature?

For example, on a recent trip I made to Milltown, I interviewed Charles VanMeter of Marengo. He became a cook in the Army while serving in WW II and was stationed in Europe. He returned home to open his restaurant in downtown Marengo and later built Vans Little Cottage on SR 64.

We, as a group, could compile a list of veterans and develop some parameters for interviewing them. Could we create a place to host the stories on the Crawford Gen Web?

Here is a link to what Perry County is doing:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inperry/wwiimem.htm
It doesn't include the richness of stories, however, which is what I think we have the opportunity to capture while these veterans are still with us.

Karla Schlensker Sneegas

Hi all, I am the GGG Grandson of Hardin Satterfield. I am trying to locate as much information on the Satterfield Families of Crawford County as I can. A lot of you have been a great help and I thank you. If anyone has information that can help me "fill in the blanks", I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm currently working on Ransom/Rancine Satterfield whom I believe to be the Father of Hardin, Greenville and Louisville Jesse. Also there may be a fourth son Ransom.

I'm also interested in the descendancy of these Satterfields, as I know nothing of Louisville, and am having trouble with Greenville's descendant tree.

I would be happy to share what I've found so far.

Thanks

A Fellow Stroud researcher sent this to me. We are trying to figure out which Stroud family this gentleman belongs to.
Thanks for any help you can provide. Kat in Texas.
---------------------------
Hon. John Stroud died at his residence, near Milltown, Crawford county, last Friday. He had been suffering some time from the effects of pneumonia, and up to the time of his death his physician was hopeful of his recovery.

I've hit rather a dead end in my search for my mother's side of the family.

I'm looking for information on the parents and siblings of Charles Sands Crandall. He married Mary Jane Stephenson about 1908. According to what little I could find, his father was John Crandall and his mother Hannah Cunningham.

I'm also interested in similar information on Edmond Grant Wyman (usually just Grant Wyman) and Jennie Whitaker (also Jenny, Jinnie, etc. and Whittaker).

Eldridge Glenn Crandall, the eldest son of Charles and Mary (born 1910), moved to Lake Geneva, Walworth County, WI with his wife Millicent Revetta Wyman (daughter of Grant and Jennie) and their children about 1940.

If any of these people cross with your own research, or if you have any additional information about any of these families in the Whiskey Run area, I would be very interested in hearing from you.

Thank you;
Carel

Crawford County should be extremely proud that one of her own was used by God to touch so many lives. I attended Dr Roberson's funeral. Thousands were at the funeral of a 97 year old man. That alone speaks of the influence of his life.

Renowned Minister Dr. Lee Roberson Dies At 97
Longtime Pastor Of Highland Park Baptist, Tennessee Temple Founder
posted April 29, 2007

Dr. Lee Roberson, longtime pastor of the Highland Park Baptist Church and founder and president of Tennessee Temple Schools, died Sunday morning at the age of 97.

Dr. Roberson was world-renowned in religious circles.

His longtime associate, Dr. J.R. Faulkner, wrote this account of his life:

He was born in a two-room log cabin on Nov. 24, 1909, and spent his first two years on a farm near English, Ind., a small town in the southern part of the state. In 1911, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Roberson, took him to a farm near Louisville, Ky., where his father farmed, worked on streetcars, and built homes to make a living. At the age of 14, he was led to the Lord by his faithful Sunday School teacher, Mrs. Daisy Hawes, and joined the Cedar Creek Baptist Church outside of Louisville.

After spending two years at the Louisville Male High School, where he received a diploma in public accounting when he was 14 years old, Dr. Roberson then attended the Fern Creek High School and was graduated after four years. While a student, he played football with the high school team.

Brother Roberson entered Old Bethel College in Russellville, Ky., in 1926, and finished the first year. There he worked at various jobs from washing dishes to scrubbing floors to pay his way. From Old Bethel College, he went to the University of Louisville to complete his college work with a major in history. He also completed his work for a degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. At the age of 19, he was called to a church in Jeffersontown, Ky., which he did not accept.

In his early years, Dr. Roberson was well known as a singer. Having studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and with the well-known teacher, John Samples, of Chicago, his services as a vocalist were in great demand. He served as a soloist on the staff of radio station WHAS of Louisville, Ky., and WSM out of Nashville. Doors were opening in the field of secular music. Dr. Roberson could have signed a contract with a certain man in the city of Nashville that, no doubt, would have led him to the top in music. However, he felt that this was not the thing the Lord wanted for him; so he refused to sign the contract.

The first church that Brother Roberson served as pastor was in Germantown, Tn., while he was going to college. In 1932, he was called to be pastor of the Temple Baptist Church in Green Brier, Tn. It was there that he discovered the truth of the second coming of Christ. After three years with the Green Brier Church, where the Lord wonderfully blessed, Dr. Roberson entered full-time evangelistic work in 1935. He served as evangelist of the Birmingham Baptist Association; and within two years, he conducted some fifty revivals in the Birmingham area.

It was while he was in Birmingham that he met Miss Caroline Allen, who, on Oct. 9, 1937, became Mrs. Lee Roberson.

On the first Sunday in November 1937, Dr. Roberson became pastor of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield, Ala.

In 1939, Brother Roberson was asked to be the state evangelist for Alabama. He felt this was not the Lord's will for him at the time, so the offer was not accepted.

On May 2, 1941, Lee Anne, the Roberson's oldest child, was born.

After five years with the Fairfield church, Dr. Roberson was called to the Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, in November of 1942. Brother Roberson, our pastor, is a man of God at home as well as at church. He has set an example of faithfulness and devotion to his family and to his convictions before his church and to the entire world. At home, he has sought to teach his children in the fear and admonition of the Lord around a daily family altar, which has reflected itself in the lives of the children.

Dr. Roberson's devotion to duty and to his convictions has laid upon him a demanding schedule that has caused him, throughout his life, to get up early and to burn the midnight oil in prayer and study of the Word of God and the writings of others that he might maintain his burden to reach as many souls for Christ as he can, by every possible means. New sermons are constantly pouring from his soul and new books from his pen.

Whether he be speaking from the pulpit of the Highland Park Baptist Church, the chapel platform of Tennessee Temple Schools, to his Men's Bible Class, or at one of many other special services, his messages are always fresh, fervent, and filled with the power of God. In speaking of him, someone has said, "He is truly the Spurgeon of our times."

Dr. Roberson's daily schedule began with Bible study and prayer at 6:30 in the morning, followed by breakfast and devotions with his family, a broadcast beginning at 8:30 a.m., and a chapel service at Tennessee Temple Schools at 10:00. His morning hours were also filled with private conferences with church people and students of Tennessee Temple Schools. His daily visitation program took him into the numerous hospitals of the city as well as homes of the church members.

Pastor Roberson's favorite Scripture...
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." -Romans 8:28
I am looking for the gravesite of Mary Ann Douthit Sloan wife of Benjamin Neal Sloan she died in November 1879 and is said to be buried there. I was able to go to the cemetery several years ago, there are few markers left standing. Thanks for any and all help. Carol

STROUD/AGAN family of Crawford County, IND 1800's

I am researching my husband's STROUD family. His direct ancestor was Thomas STROUD (b. 13 May 1772 in North Carolina-d. 26 Jan 1852 Marengo, Crawford County, Indiana Buried at Marengo Cemetery, Crawford County, Indiana.)
He was married (?secondly) to Jane AGAN about 1806.
Another family researcher found a land sale for 7 Mar 1806 in Randolph County, North Carolina:
Thomas Stroud to Samuel Aston 100.00 for 100a. Randolph Co., NC.
We believe that Thomas moved to the Crawford County IND area at that time. I found this book in the New Albany-Floyd Co. Library that verifies this info:
" A History of Crawford County" By John H. Weathers. Written in 1889. Reprinted in 1983.
pg 14. There were pioneers in what is now Crawford County--hunters and adventurers were here as early as 1804....In 1806 quite a number of families came to southern Indiana. One man settled on Cider Fork of Whiskey Run Creek in what is now Whiskey Run township. This was Thomas Stroud. He must, therefore, be accounted the first settler of Crawford county having settled in March 1806.
In the fall of 1806 Mr. Stroud was followed by E. E. Morgan, William McKee, and William Frakes.

Are your STROUDS/AGAN families from the Randolph County, NC area and do you have any info on the Jane or Thomas Stroud in your database?
I look forward to hearing from you,
Kathy Booth Locke, Lewisville, Texas USA
The Hood River Glacier, Hood River, OR., August 22, 1902, page 3

WILL IN A GRAVE
It Was Found After Thirty Years in a Buried Family Bible

After lying in a man's coffin for more than 30 years a will has been exhumed at Leavenworth, Ind., and its terms are likely to increase a troublesome litigation among the heirs of the man who had the document buried with him, says a local exchange.
Jacob Kissinger was the man. The will was found by accident, because, when Kissinger died, although the will was believed to have been made, nobody could find it. So the heirs went to law, and have been at it for three decades.
A few days ago a dispute arose which could be cleared up by the family Bible. So the old grave was opened and the book taken out. It was in a good state of preservation, and when opened, to the surprise of everyone, disclosed the old man's will.
By the terms of the document found in the grave, the property of Kissingen was divided equally among five children, one of them a resident of Germany and born of Kissingen's first wife. And this is where the new trouble begins. None of the four American heirs ever heard of the father's first marriage, and not one of them guessed that he had a brother in Europe.
The German heir, of course, has been in ignorance, too, of the existence of his American brothers, and the property and money bequeathed to him. If he presses his claim now it is said that the four brothers who live here will have quite a hole made in their purses when they pay him what is his by his father's will.

---------

This was posted for reference only. I am not related to, nor am I researching this family. If you have additional information about the family or event mentioned above, please post it as a reply.
Williamson Nash and Elizabeth Baylor

I'm looking for information on Williamson Nash and his wife Elizabeth Baylor. They were married on 7SEP1851 in Crawford County, IN. They had 2 children, Mary Ellen Nash born in 1855 and Nancy Elizabeth Nash born in November 28, 1857. Mary Ellen Nash married Andrew Johnson Bennington on 23NOV1879. Nancy Elizabeth Nash married Frank Bell on 31AUG1879.
Obviously, Elizabeth died before 1858, because Williamson remarried Nancy Jane Webster on 22NOV1858. Williamson is listed as William along with Nancy, Mary, and Nancy in the 1860 census of Daviess County, IN.

Williamson and Nancy had 2 children together: Williamson Nash II born 29DEC1861 and Olive Nash born abt. 1872. Williamson II was living with Andrew and Mary (Nash) Bennington in the 1880 census in Daviess Co. Olive Nash was living with an uncle and aunt, Americus and Mary (Nash) Hedden in the 1880 census of Daviess Co. Did Williamson I and Nancy Nash die before the 1880 census? Is that why their 2 children are living in different households. Anyone with information on this family, please respond.
Thanks,
Janice

Crawford County Families

Two brothers, Robert S. THOM and Allan D. THOM came to Crawford County in the early 1800s and were instrumental in the founding of the town of Fredonia. Robert Thom married Hannah Marion JOHNSON on October 11, 1829 in Crawford County. They appear to have had at least two children. After Robert's death, Allan D. Thom married Robert's widow, Hannah, in 1837. Allan D. Thom and Hannah Johnson Thom had five daughters that I know of.

Children of Robert S. Thom and Hannah M. Johnson:

(speculative) Allan D. Thom b. abt 1830, m. Margaret R. LEAVENWORTH in 1855
Mary Jane Thom b. 1832, m. Wilford H. CONROD/CONRAD in 1855

Children of Allan D. Thom and Hannah Johnson Thom:

Malissa Thom b: Abt. 1838
Caroline H. Thom b: 1839, m. Henry Floyd SAMUELS in 1877
Mariah L. Thom b: Abt. 1842
Lucy Ellen Thom b: Abt. 1845, m. Robert Bruce GAITHER in 1867
Virginia Thom b: Abt. 1847, m. Samuel C. SMITH in 1868

Also, in the Crawford County Probate Records I find on May 4, 1830, Allan D. Thom was appointed guardian of Milton BARTHOLOMEW, John BARTHOLOMEW, and Owen BARTHOLOMEW minor heirs of Unice BARTHOLOMEW deceased. I do not know whether or not there is any relationship between the Thom and Bartholmew families or if it was simply a case where Allan D. Thom had the means to support three orphaned boys. As far as I know Allan D. Thom was unmarried at that time.

If any one has information on any of the named people or their families I would sincerely appreciate hearing from you.

I am looking for info on a James S Wright, born about 1820
in Crawford County. He had a son, David Elijah, who then had 8 children, Geroge Wilson Wright is my GGGrandfather, Homer Earl is my Grandfather. That's as far back as I can go. Oh, James married Mary Foster 7 Jul 1836, if that helps any. I believe that the family had moved to maybe Orange county, but I cannot find any info that confirms this. There seems to be many Wrights in Orange county. Thanks!
