Thank you for posting this obituary. Hope it will lead me to info on John Todd Mahorney.

Am trying to find what the connection is between Dignam and Mahorney. Dignam was a witness for Mahorney on his passport to go to Great Britain with his family in 1877 while both living in Indianapolis.

Mahorney was from antebellum free black family. He was born in Chambersburgh, PA, but also associated with Pittsburgh it seems. The family may have once been enslaved in Virginia. Mahorney was apprenticed as a brick layer but later went into business as a wig and hairwork manufacturer (a business of his wife's family--Jared Gray). This was a very upwardly mobile family in business, literary societies, education, labor organizing and politics in Indianapolis. Can you shed light on Dignam and their association? If not, I certainly thank you for sharing the obit which is a lead for me. --Maribeth
