As a gift to my mom, who just turned 89, I am researching our family tree. For this branch, I am interested in William Smith, brother to Nathan and Abraham, who reportedly moved to Ohio from Vermont in 1811. William, who was born in Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont in 1785, died in Manchester, Ohio in 1849. I gather from other postings that William was in Ohio by 1840. His wife, Rush Bushnell, died on 2 Feb 1839, and is buried in Bennington County, Vermont.

So...when and why did William leave Vermont for Ohio? Could be that his wife's death prompted that act, but he had at least three children (Martha, Mary Ann and John) who also lived in Vermont, and were alive at the time. I am having difficulty locating another son, William Stephen, but my gggrandfather, Frank (Franklin) Smith moved to Oregon, and a bit south to Northern California. Family lore has it that something "scandalous" happened.
