Am researching MICAJAH GWARTNEY who was born in VA in 1750 and died in Harrison Co., IN in 1818 (Aug or Nov). His wife was Elizabeth McGuffy/McGuffey and they had the following children:

1. Ephraim G. Gwartney, b. 1791, Virginia, United States
2. John Gwartney, b. 1775, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, United States
3. William G Gwartney, b. 22 Dec 1783, Virginia, United States
4. Thomas Gwartney, b. 2 Nov 1789
5. Anthony Gwartney, b. 1790
6. Male Gwartney, b. 1793
7. Polly Gwartney, b. 1794, Kentucky, United States
8. Sarah Gwartney
9. Rebecca Gwartney, b. 1801

Also possibly another daughter Julia E Gwartney, b. 1802 VA who in 1823 married Jacob Roll.

Is there a local cemetery in Harrison County where Micajah and Elizabeth Gwartney were laid to rest? If so is there any marker or stone including any supporting information?

Any and all assistance is always greatly appreciated.

Leslie (AZ)

Seeking info on family of Josephine Green m. to Robert Smith in 1858 and married to Hays McCallen in 1874 in Harrison Co. Robert Smith died in 1872 leaving widow & several children. Josephine and Hays had one child, Myra McCallen c1880-82. Josephine died shortly thereafter and Hays may have died before or within a short time after her death as all children were scattered and raised by others. Any info on Josephine's parents, on Hays and his parents, or the relocation of the children would be appreciated. I'm especially interested in the fate of Myra McCallen. Thanks.

Does anyone know more about Casper SHUBERT or SHUPERT, who was a grocer, baker, and liquor dealer in Lanesville in the 1860's? Born ab. 1824 in Bavaria, he married Gertrude MULLER or MILLER at St. Mary's church, Lanesville, in 1854. Found nothing on him after 1864. I would like to learn whether he is related to my family.

Isaac Watson & Eliza Ellen Huckeby

I'm seeking information concerning the HUCKEBY/HUCKABY family of Perry County, Indiana.

My direct maternal third great-grandmother was Eliza Ellen HUCKEBY, born June 26, 1830; died August 16, 1901. Most records state her birth state as "Kentucky", but the 1850 census shows "Indiana." She died in Harrison County, Indiana, she is buried at the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Eliza's first name shown as "Elizabeth" in some records. She was married three times.

Eliza married 1) Thomas LAMB (son of Solomon LAMB & Elizabeth SHEPHERD) on October 4, 1847, in Perry Co., IN. They were married by John J. LANG, MG. They had at least one child:

- George Wright LAMB, born November 20, 1848 in Perry Co., IN; died 1932 in Pocatello, Idaho. George married Eliza Marie COMBS on December 29, 1875. I have not verified these dates.

Thomas, Eliza, and their son George were listed in the 1850 census for Perry County. Thomas apparently died sometime between the 1850 census and 1857.

Eliza married 2) _______ SMITH, ca. 1855 probably in Perry County. They had at least one child:

- Charles E. SMITH, born April 18, 1857 in Perry Co., IN (per his marriage return); died May 23, 1926, in Harrison Co., IN. He married Anna M. HOTTLE on October 12, 1882, in Harrison Co., IN.

Charles' marriage return lists his parents as "Samuel SMITH & Elizabeth E. HUCKEBY." However, his death certificate shows his father's name as "John SMITH", his wife Anna was the informant. I have been unable to find a marriage license for Eliza Ellen (HUCKEBY) LAMB & (John/Samuel) SMITH in Perry County.

Presumably, Eliza and ______ SMITH moved to Harrison County, IN in the late 1850's.

Eliza married (as Ellen SMITH) 3) Isaac WATSON (son of Abraham WATSON & Ann ADAMS) on June 16, 1858, in Harrison Co., IN. They were married by Abraham BENNETT. They had at least eight children:

- Isaac WATSON, born March 16, 1859; died May 28, 1920. Never married.

- Anna M. WATSON, born November 20, 1860; died July 23, 1940. Married Samuel W. TINDALL, 1890.

- Ella WATSON, born November 5, 1862; died October 2, 1891. Never married. Buried at the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery.

- Infant (Son) WATSON, "Died May 19, 1865. Age 9 days." Buried at the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery.

- Joshua B. WATSON, born June 28, 1867; died February 6, 1936. Married Margaret E. KINTNER, 1888.

- Sarah J. WATSON, "Died September 23, 1869. Age 5 months, 21 days." Buried at the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery.

- William H. WATSON, "Died July 23, 1871. Age 4 months, 14 days." Buried at the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery.

- Emma Bell WATSON, born December 12, 1872; died January 27, 1947. Married Curry Lee MILLER on January 25, 1894. Curry & Emma are my second great-grandparents.

Eliza's husband, Isaac WATSON, "died June 9, 1872. age 50 years, 1 month, 21 days." Buried at the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery in southern Harrison County, IN.

Eliza's tombstone reads, "Eliza E. Watson. June 26, 1830. August 16, 1901."

There is also a "John, son of I. & E. E. Watson. Died September 6, 1863. Age 12 years, 4 months, 18 days." However, he cannot be a son of Isaac WATSON as Eliza didn't marry Isaac until 1858.

I believe that Eliza Ellen HUCKEBY (1830-1901) is a granddaughter of John HUCKEBY (1775-1827) & Frances Ann BRANNON (1781-1851). If this is correct, she is either the daughter of Thomas Huston (1800-1845), John, Jr. (1804-1852), or Joshua Brannon HUCKEBY (1802-1889), the three eldest sons of John and Frances HUCKEBY.

I have been unable to locate any additional information on Thomas Huston or John HUCKEBY. I don't know who they married, if they had children, or where they lived.

Their brother, Joshua Brannon HUCKEBY (1802-1889) married Rebecca LANG, 1824 in Perry County, IN. I think that Joshua & Rebecca had a daughter named Elizabeth. A DAR Lineage book (1919) apparently lists a "Elizabeth Huckeby" as a daughter of Joshua & Rebecca. However, that Elizabeth married a Louis/Lewis Lunsford BURKE. I have been unable to locate any information on this Elizabeth, the lineage book may be incorrect.

Eliza Ellen Huckeby (1830-1901) named one of her sons, Joshua B. WATSON, probably after Joshua Brannon HUCKEBY, who is either Eliza's father or her uncle. Eliza Ellen may be named after Joshua Brannon HUCKEBY's sister, Eliza Huston HUCKEBY (1818-1888) who married Samuel T. GROVES, 1836.

If anyone has information on the HUCKEBY family, please contact me. Additionally, if anyone had access to Perry County marriage records (1840's and 1850's), please let me know. I am uncertain, but think that "Thomas LAMB" and "Eliza HUCKEBY" had a marriage affidavit taken when they were married on October 4, 1847. If anyone had a book with Perry County marriage affidavits, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Jesse Stamper
Email: Leecorydon@juno.com
I am seeking 2nd marriage, death and burial info on Sarah Ellis Crecelius b 1863 in Crawford County, IN. In 1888 she married John LG Merryman b 1868 in Crawford County. John died in an accidental dynamite explosion in 1922 in Crawford County. John is buried in Union Chapel Cemetery in Crawford County. His tombstone also has Sarah's name and birth year, but her death year is blank. I was told by an elderly Crawford County resident that following John's death, Sarah married a Mr. Zimmerman from Palmyra, IN.

Stan

Does anyone have any information on NANCY WALKER b abt 1790 in VA, probably migrated to Hardin or Mercer co KY, and from there to Corydon, Harrison Co IN, where in 1814 she married SIMON VAN ARSDALE. They had numerous children. Sons were WILLIAM H and ALEXANDER, two first names which do not appear in the Van Arsdale family. I suspect that her father or brothers may have had those names.

Nancy, along with her husband and most of her children, died during the cholera epidemic of 1832, most likely in Indiana.

Three daughters survived: HARRIET Van Arsdale m Samuel Enfield, MARGARET Van Arsdale m Nathan Caldwell, and my gg grandmother NANCY Van Arsdale who married Eli Branson Frazier. The three girls lived with relatives in Montgomery & Boone Co IN, and according to sources were bound out for service when they came of age, until their marriages. Margaret & Nathan eventually moved to Iowa.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Suicide in Harrison County - Curts, Moses

Article regarding the suicide of Moses Curts, published in the New Albany Daily Standard on 11/15/1871, page 4, column 3.

"On Friday, evening last, Mr. Moses Curts, a respected, influential citizen of Scott township, Harrison county, committed suicide by hanging. His family left him at home, as well as usual, on Friday morning, and went to a house raising in the neighborhood. In the evening his wife returned and found him absent, as she supposed, but thought nothing strange of that, expecting that he would return in the night. Not coming home at night, however, search was made for him in the morning, when his body was found hanging in the smoke house a few feet from the door of his residence. No cause is known for the commission of the horrible deed. He leaves a wife and children, who are much respected in their neighborhood."

I found the following article published in The Corydon Democrat newspaper on Nov. 24, 1892, and I cannot seem to find out exactly which Briles' line the individuals mentioned are connected too?

"Last Saturday a 12-year-old daughter of John Briles of Scott township was dragged to death by a cow. She was leading the animal to water and her hands becoming cold, she tied the rope around her waist. In some way she tripped and fell which scared the cow, causing it to run, dragging the child after it. The cow continued to run until she gave out and stopped. The child was picked up dead with her back broken. The funeral took place next day and the remains interred at the Potato Run burying ground".

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

POW/MIA Korean War, Harrison Co. LOVELESS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Harrison County, Indiana as his home of record.

Soldier: LARRY LOVELESS
Born: August 2, 1931 Caucasian
Date of loss: August 11, 1959

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 69 families in Indiana that have not been located. There is one family from Harrison County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Little Flock Baptist Cemetery Restoration Project

We are in the process of restoring the Little Flock Cemetery located between Elizabeth and Buena Vista in Harrison County. We have completed the clearing of all of the underbrush and most of the trees. Only those trees that were too large to risk harming the stones have been left standing. A tree service would be necessary to clear those from the site. Next, we need to treat the area with herbicide to kill off the briars and weeds, and follow with stump removal treatment. After that, we will need to plant grass, erect a permanent marker, and if possible, fence the area to protect from vandals. Muscle power we have, money power we do not have. If you have an interest in preserving this Harrison Co treasure, we would love to hear from you.

The first burial was believed to be Benjamin Shields in May of 1819. There are at least 100 graves in the site, with two or three Revolutionary War and three Civil War soldiers buried there. Most of the graves are marked with ordinary fieldstones. We would hope to provide permanent markers in place of those at some future date.

We welcome all to visit the cemetery and view its beauty. Each morning as we came into the site to work last month, we found deer grazing on the little remaining grass and squirels eating hickory nuts in an old shagbark nearby while bluejays cracked beechnuts in the trees. It is truly a blessed and peaceful cemetery. The road into the site is cleared but accessable only by four wheel drive. We still need to improve the road with gravel.

I hope that all will understand that we did not do this for personal gain. Further, that all donations will go back into the care and preservation of this fine old cemetery. We have local support from family descendents of Nathan Veatch. Bernard Beauchemin and wife Sandra of Corydon were our hosts and co-workers on the project and we owe them our deepest thanks.

Could anyone please do a lookup for a birth record of William Bruce, b. 1823 in Harrison Ohio?

I am also looking for his son, Charles Moore Bruce, b. Sept 21, 1850 in Ohio? I'm pretty sure that Charles was also born in Harrison Ohio.

I think they were Methodists, so if there are any church records which might be available I'd really appreciate a lookup for this information also.

Thanks you!

Wright/Cathcart

Sorry I missed this particular message. I have quite a bit of information on the Wrights of Harrison County, IN. It was all received by a 4th cousin of mine who lived with his parents until their death. I'll just put some information and you can see if this is the same family:
George Wright b. July 1757 and died June 27, 1838 in Harrison County. He married Jane (unknown) who was born abt. 1751 and died Oct. 8, 1839. My notes say they had 4 children, but I have only one. My notes also say that the Wrights began their family reunions about 100 years ago and are related to Phil Harris, the comedian and band leader.
George and Jane are buried in Musselman Cemetery.
Their child: Robert Wright was b. 1784 in Belfast, Ireland and died September 25, 1839. He married Ginnet Cathcart. She was born in SC. My notes say they had 7 children. Robert and Ginnet are buried in Musselman Cemetery. Children of Robert & Ginnet are William who was born in Tennessee and married (1) Mary Biggs, 4 April 1831 and (2) Comfort Carr in 1844. Child of William Wright & Mary Biggs, Mary Wright Shuck, was murdered and her head cut off and body stuffed into a barrell and thrown into Buck Creek.!! More? The genealogy then gets into the marriages to: Rowe, Timberlake, Singleton, McKim, Shireman, Shickel, Roby, Watson and more. Let me know what you think.
Donna Tesch
dtesch@mn.rr.com
Posted in response to a query I received on INHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com requesting information about Potato Run Cemetery. Hopefully it will help someone if I also post it on here.

Potato Run Cemetery is located in Scott TWP, Harrison Co., IN. This part of Scott TWP has now been taken over by Harrison TWP. It is situated in Section 10, Township 4 South, Range 2 East.

The church at Potato Run, or Browns, as it was first called was organized in 1814 by rev. Dr. John George Pfrimmer. They had a log house as early as 1828. The charter members were largely made up of Brown, Cole & Miller families. Later we find that the Cole, Breeden & Craig families dominate. It is located among the hills of Blue River between Leavenworth & Corydon.

Since the Sate of Indiana has bought all the land around the church, the families have moved & only special meetings are held in the Church.

Names of folks burried there include Willett; McCullum; McCabe; Qualls; Brown; Stephenson; Daugherity; Briles; Blackburn; Swartz; Pease; Davis; Breeden; Trobaugh; Perew; Dennison; Landon; Denniston; Hockman; Langdon; Kintner; rainbolt; Cole; froman; Bird; Beyrley; Lamon; Bottles; Green; Earls; Allen; Curts; Wolfe; Heishman; Kellum; Rawlings; McGuire,
Meyers, Hannel, Bailey, Hockman, Snapp, Tague, and Hiser.

I have a list if you know the name, i can give you the other information that is listed on the tombstone. ~~ Lisa

My great grandfather was Marshall BEARD and his wife was Sallie KENNEDY. Marshall's son Henry Washington BEARD is my grandfather. Marshall was supposed to have come from Harrison County Indiana and I am having a difficult time tracing anywhere after him. He's my dead-end. Marshall was born in 1867 and died in 1926 or 27. I think he had a brother named Henry because my dad said "Grampa (Marshall) bought old home place and his brother bought Mrs Aders old place. Uncle Henry is who daddy was named after." I don't have many clues on Beard line so am just praying someone out there knows something and we just haven't met yet. God bless!!

I am starting up this thread again to see if anyone has any updated info on here...

Spinning off this thread, I am wondering about John Wesley Miller that married Harriet Highfill... He was born in Indiana around 1815-1820 (according to the census records)... Does anyone know the parents of John Wesley? Or where he was born in Indiana... I know that in the 1850 census they are living in District 45, Harrison County, IND and then by 1860 they had moved to Jersey County, Illinois.

Just wanting more background on John Westly... I did find where he is buried at and found his birthdate (Nov 1895-- no day)... I have been told that there are no Miller stones at this cemetery but many Millers are buried there... Not sure if they didn't ever have a stone or they are long gone by now...

DH and I are headed out there this evening to see what we can find...

Any new info??

She married Curry Lee Miller on Jan. 25, 1894. He was the son of George Melancthon (Manthley) Miller (1847-1912) and Nancy Funkhouser (1848-1931). I have seen her parents listed as Isaac Watson and Elizabeth Huckelby. However, I have been unable to find any information on Isaac Watson or Elizabeth Huckelby.

Does anyone have any information on the Huckelby family? I wonder if Elizabeth Huckelby is some how related to the Huckelberry family of Crawford Co., IN.

Any information on the Watson's or the Huckelby's would be appreciated.

Sincerely, Jesse Stamper

Murder/Death of Charity Curts?

Does anyone have any add'l information on the death Charity Curts, b. 11/21/1889, Harrison Co., IN, m. Sherman McAdams, d. 04/1932. Parents were Leonard L Curts & Teana Swartz Curts.

I found where someone had posted in their family tree the following information on the death of Charity Curts:
Corydon Democrat - 04/1932 - death
Tells of Charity being murdered by her husband John Green and then he took his own life. My grandmother, Lola Lang, was alive at that time and she never believed that story. Lola told me that she had been one of the women that came and the ladder was too far for John to hang himself. She always thought John's daughter killed them both. This is just speculation on her part.

Could someone maybe do a look-up in the newspaper and get a copy of the article for me?? Also, does anyone know what cemetery Charity is buried in?

Anything would be greatly appreciated. - Thx, Ashlee Prather-Hawkins

Charles Henry GINKINS was born aug. 3,1849 in Boyle County, Ky., & came to Corydon with his mother at the age of nine., his mother dying two years later. Starting in life as a boy, without the aid of father or mother, He learned to be honest & industrious. He was long prominent in the business & public affairs of Corydon & Harrison county. He was engaged in the restaurant, monument & coal business, & he was Recorder of the county one term of four years. He was a member of the Christian church & the Odd Fellows & Knights of Pythias lodges of Corydon. C.H. Ginkins was first married to Nanny E. Murdoch. Upon her death, he married Letitia Bruch. It is unknown how C.H. managed to survive in life once his mother died when he was 11 yrs. I would appreciate any help that anyone could be regarding what happened to young orphaned children back in those days in Corydon. This was my ggrandfather.
e-mail me at Baw395@aol.com

Cordelia A. Windell Hisey

I am looking for death information on Cordelia. She was born about 1848 to George & Catherine Windell in Harrison County. On 5 Jan 1869, she married William H. Hisey. After that point, I can't find her anymore. If anyone has information on her date of death, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, her mother Catherine and brothers Isaac and Zach haven't been found after the 1850 Census. Any assistance on any of these individuals would be greatly appreciated.

Windell, Bartholomew

I am looking for information on this individual. He was born March 10, 1874 in Harrison County. It appears his mother was Susan/Cordelia Shireman (she married John Shireman 1879). We are trying to find out who Bartholomew's Windell father was. I can't seem to connect Susan/Cordelia (not sure which is accurate) to being married to a Windell in Harrison County. If anyone has any information on Bartholomew's parents, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!
