I have Etienne Boutron dit Major married to Angelique Proteau on May 3 1706 at Notre Dame de Lourdes, Quebec.
Etienne Boutron dit Major was the son of Claude Boutron dit Major & Blaise Saindo of Franche-Comte, France.
In 1706 Etienne & Angelique were living at Fort Detroit, New France (Michigan) where their daughter Marie Angelique Boutron was baptized on July 5 1707. Please see: www.telusplanet.net/public/dgraneau/metis
as my source on the baptism.
There is an entry at genealogy.com under the Proteau message board that states that Etienne was a soldier in Laforest Company. He may have very well been a soldier.
I have Etienne & Angelique's children as follows:
1) Marie Angelique b. July 5 1707
2) Marguerite b. Sept. 16 1709
3) Joseph b. Nov. 20 1711
4) Jean-Baptiste b. Feb. 28 1713
5) Therese b. 1715
6) Nicholas b. Oct. 1 1716 d. March 25 1717
7)Louis b. March 19 1718
8) Andre b. May 26 1720 d. Aug. 15 1720
9) Guilaume-Etienne b. July 8 1722
10) Elie born??
It does appear that the surname Boutron was dropped at some point in favor of Major. The last time I have Boutron used but with a slightly different spelling is with Gedeon Beautron dit Major in 1856 at his marriage to Marie Lariviere at St. Andre-Avellin, PQ on Jan. 21 1856. That is the last time I have Boutron or Beautron appearing in my lineage & as you can see my maiden name was Major.
Gedeon Beautron dit Major was my great great grandfather.
Perhaps the name started off as Boutron, but if these men were military men it's possible that major was their rank. It's possible that Major was a nick-name. In any case the name Boutron was dropped in favor of Major as far as my own lineage goes.
Of note: Etienne Boutron dit Major would have been the great great grandfather of Gedeon Beautron dit Major according to what I have on my ancestry.
Hope this helps someone.
