Need obituary help in Gary, 1991

Need help in locating an obituary for Juanita Clark Glenn. I believe she died July 23, 1991 in Gary, Indiana according to the social security death index. Are there any researchers that do the Random Act of Genealogical Kindness for Lake county? I don't have access to any of the Indiana papers plus I live in a very small town that doesn't have the inter-library exchange. I would be grateful for any help.

Despite what his WW2 Draft Registration shows, he couldn't have been born IN Gary, since Gary was not founded as a city until 1906. He could have been born in what is NOW Gary, but the Lake County, Indiana Index to Birth Records does not show any Coffey/Coffee, and Whiting's birth index starts in 1899. It's possible his birth was not recorded at the time. You might see if Lake County has any delayed birth registrations.

I have been researching the American humorist and author Jean P. Shepherd, Jr. (1921-1999), perhaps best known now for the classic movie, "A Christmas Story" (1983). He lived in East Chicago in approximately 1927-28, while attending McKinley Elementary School, before moving to Hammond. I am trying to identify exactly where he lived in East Chicago. Two likely possibilities are the Atlas Apartments on Forsythe St. (now called Indianapolis Boulevard), or perhaps somewhere else on or near Beacon Street. Does anyone have access to city directories or the like for the relevant years? Shepherd's father had the same name as his son. His mother was named Ann.

Searching for Charles William Cooper, b. Jan. 1876/1878 in Knox Co. Missouri and his last known whereabouts are the 1942 WWII draft registration. He was in East Chicago living at 3920 Evergreen St. He is also found on the 1940 Census in East Chicago with wife Rebecca living 3505 Block Ave. He'd be about 66 yrs. old in 1942, so he could have lived up until the 1960s or later.

I'd like to know if there is a death index for Lake Co. ? Or city directories online ? I'm just trying to find when he died and where he is buried.

Also, is is fairly common for folks that lived in Lake Co. to have actually died in Cook Co. IL at a medical facility, or were there several hospitals in Lake Co. near East Chicago that they could have went to ? I'm just looking for what direction to go to find him.
GG-grandfather died 1872 - John or Johann Pickner reportedly in a sawmill accident. Have seen newspaper report of estate, but can find no burial site/obituary/death record for him. Have him in 1870 US Census in Center/Lake Co. Ind. with family.
No records on Findagrave or other online sources. Looks as if a lot of the cemeteries from that time period are now gone/moved etc.

Any help finding any additional information on John (Johann) Pickner would be greatly appreciated. Born approx. 1835 Bohemia, died approx. 1872 Indiana (or Illinois). Wife Anna R. Marcus (Markus).

Re: Hayes Vickers

Hello again. My father, Robert S. Vickers, is quite excited that you replied!

Information on Hayes can be found at:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSmid=4...;

My father read it and said it was accurate. Hayes died June 11, 1938, in Gary In. Born Nov. 10, 1879.

My father, Robert, says he remembers a cousin named Keir, from Spencer, who was the daughter of Mr. Peeso (he doesn't remember Mr. Peeso's first name). The daughter married a Robert (he thinks, but is unsure) Keir, who my father believes may have been an agricultural agent of some form. Perhaps you can piece some truths from his memory!

Robert Vickers went to Spencer circa 1956 with his mother, Leona Vickers, and his second cousin Frank Bowers from NYC, to see a Georgia, Matie, and Lana, though he's a bit confused on how each of these three relate.

So I'm continuing to get little bits out of my father, Robert, when he says "I have a picture she painted hanging in my bedroom." "Well, I said, that's really something!" So we went into his bedroom and pulled a painting off the wall signed G. Haygarth, and on the back it says "Painted by Georgia Peeso Haygarth of Spencer Iowa, sometime before 1936. Georgia was a first cousin to Hayes Vickers on the Bowers side." It's a watercolor of a snowy lane through some woods.

Another memory: Sometime around 1936 my father remembers being checked out of school so he and his parents (Hayes and Leona) could travel to Spencer to attend a funeral for Mr. Haygarth, who had fallen off of a roof onto his head. He recalls a son George Haygarth, but thinks George died unexpectedly on a cruise ship.

My father also remembers that the Keirs adopted an orphaned German girl (possibly named Heidi?), and on their transit from NY to Spencer, stopped in Gary to see the Vickers family.

I'll stop typing before he remembers yet more! I hope this means something to your family.

Jim (b. 1964)

My husband, Richard Keir, is happy to learn of this also. I will send a longer email to your son James with details of how my husband connects to your family. I am continuing to add data to the Vickers/Bowers/Peeso lines and hope that you and your son can fill me in on the more recent generations. I hope you are doing well and will enjoy reading what I send to James.
Grace Keir

Hi,

I am Robert Squire Vickers, son of Hayes and Leona Vickers, so you are getting this information straight from the horse's mouth.

Hayes Vickers is buried in Roseboom New York, along with Leona and many of the Vickers family. Hayes was buried, while Leona was cremated.

In truth this is being typed by Robert's son, James Squire Vickers, with input from my father, who turns 90 next Tuesday.

Robert is living in an assisted living center near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His two daughters also live in town, while I (his son James) live out in California.

My father says he had a cousin with a last name of Keir living in Spencer Iowa -- could this be you?

My sister and I found an obituary for Hayes, on a web site called something like "findagrave.com". It said that Hayes and his brother Harry (but not his twin Wheeler) died within hours of each other, which my father confirms. Hayes died at a hospital near his home in Gary, In, of encephalitis.

My father says he could say a lot more. You can reply and he will hopefully see your message, or you could email me (Jim) for information too -- vickers at siloet dot net.

Hello - you didn't mention the name of the deceased, but perhaps this is the cemetery? http://files.usgwarchives.net/in/lake/cemetery/hess-pap.txt - this is for the Hess/Hessville/Pauper Cemetery in Hessville, a par of Hammond, IN.

According to my parents, who grew up & still live in that area, this "Paupers" cemetery was originally established on the Hess family farm for the Hess family, later was a true "paupers" cemetery, and eventually evolved into just a rather inactive regular but small cemetery.

Dad also mentioned another cemetery not far away from this one, also located in the Hessville part of Hammond, that he could not recall the name of & I couldn't locate one on the internet.

I'm heading down that way over the next couple weeks & can go poking around if you'd like. Just email me & let me know a name to look for as I traipse amongst the stones :-)

There's also an Oak Hill Cemetery in Gary, Lake Co., Indiana but if your relatives were buried out of Prusiecki's then they are probably in the Hammond location. Both Oak Hills really went downhill. Volunteers have been really busy reviving the Hammond location now. When I visited the Gary cemetery in the mid70s I was knee deep in grass & weeds. They cleaned it up since but the sexton keeping the records for years was a disaster and many people went unrecorded. Many people buried from Prusieckis were interred in St. John-St. Joseph Diocesan Cemetery in Hammond if they were Catholics and in Elmwood Cemetery if they were not.

Hi Samantha,

Thanks so much for the great Reed info!! Jennie was my mother's aunt and my grand aunt. I never met her but my mother spoke of her fondly. I'd love to get all the info I can about her descendents from you. Would you happen to have any old photos of her, Ermel or their generations of offspring you could email to me?

Most of what I've learned about Jennie's family (so far) can be found in the "Chase Jensen" family tree on Ancestry. If you have any questions, please fire away :-)

Mary McGuire Mollard
mmm@sbbmail.com

Ramona, who also goes by Toni,Aunt Toni, is living in AZ now near Lois Rairden and we just celebrated her 90th birthday! Her husband was my Grandma's brother Robert Reed, Uncle Bobby.Unfortunately he died many years ago.
