"Moss Farm" in Anderson Township?

I have recently found photos of my grandfather's (Ralph Clifford HARRIS) first home. The photos are marked "Moss Farm." I've attached them here. Does anyone recognize this house/farm? If so, is it still there? I don't know the location. I do, however, know that his parents (David Thomas and Edith Bell CHESNUT HARRIS) owned parcels of land in three sections of Anderson Township. Now I've been trying all morning to compare the old atlas with newer maps of Anderson to try to get a real picture of what roads these parcels would have been near - without much luck.

If anyone understands townships and ranges, the parcels were as follows:
SW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 15
NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Section 15
E 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Section 21
SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 22
S 1/8 of NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 22
W 1/16 of SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 22

I don't know if all of that helps or not. I would so love to place this home with a real location. If I find my "really good" map of Anderson and can figure out road locations, I will add a post here.
Thanks so much for any help!
Jan Rader
Kent, Ohio

Blaney Palmer JR of Ripley County IN

I am seeking information about Blaney Palmer JR, son of Blaney Palmer and Elizabeth Reed. Following is research I have uncovered so far:

* Blaney Palmer Jr. married Flora Belle Hess, daughter of David McBride and Nancy Hess, in Ripley County IN
* Blaney Jr. and Flora had two children - Coy J born about 1892 and Elsie A. born about 1894/1895 in Ripley County IN
* A Blaney Palmer shows up as passing away in Alton IL in 1929 - this makes sense, on my side, as his children were reportedly placed in an orphanage located in Alton IL when the oldest was around 7 or 8 years old.
* Coy J Palmer married Ellen (Cecilia) Connolly in IL. They had at least one child - Coy E (1918-1920). Ellen died in 1923. He married a daughter of Martin T Craddock and Saluda Patterson of IL but unable to confirm this through marriage records since it is not known if they married in IL or IN or where at in either state.

What I am stumbling on is the following:
* Unconfirmed: Blaney is buried in a Catholic cemetery - same parrish as the Catholic orphanage his children were placed.
* Unconfirmed: Coy J married a second time in IN
* Unconfirmed: Elsie A. moved to Muncie IN and married
* Unconfirmed: Blaney Jr. and Flora divorced
* Unconfirmed: Flora Belle Hess moved to Marion County/Indianapolis area and married.
* Unconfirmed: Blaney Jr. married two more times in Ripley County IN

The talk about Flora and Blaney each marrying again has me curious on if they had any more children. Also, a Blaney Palmer dying in Alton IL has me wondering if, he was married at the time, about if his then wife remained in that area.

I am also curious about Elsie A - who did she marry, did she live in Muncie IN - better yet, did she move to IN or stay in IL? I am also hitting a brick wall with David McBride Hess - parents, any other children besides Flora Belle, etc.
Seeking information on the family of Richard G. Hastings and wife Mary McDonough, who lived in or near the town of Anderson in the late 1800s according to Census records. He was born circa 1838 and appears to have been dead by 1889. His widow Mary was living as late as 1900, but I lose the trail after that. They had three children -- Effie Hastings (born 1867), Elmer Hastings (born about 1869), and Iva Hastings (born 1872), who married William White in 1900 and eventually moved to North Carolina, where she died in 1943. I am trying to assist Iva's granddaughter find information about the family tree, and any help would be very much appreciated.

David Gammon
Morehead City NC

Conner, John and James Madison County 1840/1850...

I am looking for more information on my 3rd great grand uncle's, John and James. They moved to Madison Co. from Meigs Co., OH. between 1830 and 1840. Pioneer History of Meigs County, page 55. "Adah Ogden, daughter of Alvin Ogden and wife, was born March 7th, 1799, and was married to John Conner. They moved to Indiana. To them were born six children."

I have found John and James on the 1840 U.S. Census, Indiana, Madison, Unknown, page 216. They are living very close to one another. I have found John on the 1850 U.S. Census, Indiana, Madison, Richland, page 61. Two children missing... probably married?

John Conner, 57, Pennsylvania
Adah, 51, Ohio
Eliza, 22, Ohio
Levi, 18, Ohio
Neal, 18, Ohio
Nancy, 13?, Indiana

I have also found record of John and Adah's death and burial at Richland Twp., Madison Co., Indiana, Nelson Cemetery. Other relations possibly burried here too.

I still have more to discover, but here is what I am trying to answer.... What happened to James Conner and family? The Ohio probate record for the Conner Boy's FATHER states that James died in Indiana. Probate took place in 1858. I can't seem to find anything on James after 1840 and I am in hope that somebody else might have a clue.

Thanks For Your Time.
Wm.D. Guiel

Burial info or Obit for Charles Baird/Barth

I have been researching my Barth line for several years now. My 2nd great grandfather, Charles Baird/Barth has always been the brick wall. He was born in Germany around 1846. I came across him in the Civil War Pension Index listed with last name of Baird. I requested the full record from the National Archives and hit the jackpot. They sent 73 pages full of information. Amongst the new information was his date and place of death. He died on the 18 May 1895 in Alexandria, Madison, Indiana. I am assuming he is buried there as well. If anyone has access to cemetery indexes or obituaries from the time, can you assist me in confirming his final resting place...and any other information that might be available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

obit please-Mary Crouse or Mary Teague died 14 Feb 1896

What might be going on is that there is a main Teague headstone and then a smaller headstone for Mary Crouse. The transcriber wrote down both. I found the full death date for Mary Crouse 2/24/1896 in Madison Co., Pendleton, 84 years old. You might get lucky w/ an obit. I found a census w/ Mary Crouse living w/ her daughter Sarah who married Augustus Tague. I 'think' I found them also in 1850 and 1900. I found a death date for Augustus Teague as 12/14/1916 in Madison Co., Pendleton. I don't see Sarah. Maybe his obit will help.

William Crow family on the 1880 census in Lafayette township

I am searching for information on William Crow and his family. In 1880 they were living in Lafayette Township in Madison County, IN. When William's sister, Rachel A. Crow Allen died in 1918 in Madison County, William is listed as a survivor. In 1880 William had a wife Emma C. and a daughter Sarah E. who was 2 years old. William was born in Pike County, Ohio about 1850 and was the son of John Crow and Mary Smith.

I am trying to track down information about my great-grandmother Etta May Lewis- wife of Harry Willard Lee. She was orphaned and raised by Joseph Addison Holston and his wife Lettitia Temple.
There are accounts of Holston in both "Historical sketches and reminiscences of Madison County, Indiana" and "The Pioneer" by Samuel Harden, Anderson, IN. He also adopted a boy named James Watson.

Etta May's California Death Record states that her mother's maiden name was Scotten. Her fathers was Lewis, of course.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!
~Lisa

Dr. William W. Kneale Family

Hi,
I have a couple of photos in my great-grandmother's stuff of a Dr. Kneale family reunion. Apparently, Dr. Kneale was the attending physician during the illness and death of my gr-gr-grandfather, Samuel Chesnut, and the Kneale family kept in touch with the Chesnuts for some time. I found Dr. Kneale with wife and two young children in the 1900 census, living in Anderson at 936 West 8th Street (that's the only census I've been able to find them on - he was 34, she was 28, and their children were 6 and 1). I've tried various sites to see if the house in the photos is still standing, but there are a lot of trees in that area, and I just can't tell. It's a huge brick house, so you'd think it'd still be there, but you never know. I've posted a photo here to see if anyone recognizes it. Also, if anyone knows anything more about the doctor and family, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jan Rader
Kent, Ohio
It must be off the road because I didn't see it the other day when I was looking for it. A Civil War soldier by the name of Tilman Snelson is buried there and I want to get a photo of his headstone. I'm guessing you have to walk in somebodys yard to get to it.

Thank you.

Joel MAHAN, c1820-1862-3, KY>IN>AL>IL

My GGgrandfather was JOEL MAHAN b KY ca 1820. He was in Pickens Co, AL 1840 census. In 1850 he was in Fayette Co AL census with wife and children. By 1860 he was in Monroe Co MS with family. Joel died during the Civil war 1862 or 1863 in a Yankee prison camp in IL. Recently I found another person by the name of Joel M. Mahan in the 1840 Madison Co. IN census. I'm wondering if this Mahan would be related to my Mahans. I'm not sure who my gggrandfather Joel's father was. Some people think that his father was Alexander Mahan and Patsy Hornsby from KY. So, it would really be great if someone out there has any information about JOEL M MAHAN in IN. My gggrandfather on the other side of my family was WILLIAM PITT b 1818 NC. He was connected to a Pitts family that were Quakers. These Quakers from Guilford Co NC, DEEP RIVER MM, migrated to Indiana ca 1840. Thanks, Karen Pitt Blaylock

While looking through an interlibrary loan book "The Christian Record", edited and published by James M Mathes, Bloomington, Indiana, I came across an obituary for Eunice Benedict, published in Vol 1 No. VII The Christian Record Bloomington, Ind., January, 1844 (p. 166 of James M Mathes' book). I hope this is helpful to someone. I've typed it as it appeared, with typo's as they were.

Obituary
Madison, Ind, January 7th, '44
Elder J. M. Mathes: My mother died in the State of Michigan, on the 11th of Sept. last: aged about 84, having been a professer of Religion from her 18th year. She was a member of the Regular Baptist church. Thus has departed EUNICE BENEDICT, who lived in a state of widowhood, from Aug 5th 1791, to the day of her death. I am yours in Christian affection, H.T.N. Benedict

I am seeking information on my gggrandfather, Jacob Stover (born 1814 PA died 1888 MO). He was married to Nancy A. Nelson and their children born in Madison County were, Willliam, Henry Washington, Jonathon Columbus, Martha, Isabella, Jasper and Nineveh. The family moved to Madison County from Pennsylvania around 1828 and left for Missouri around 1860. I find Jacob and his family in the Madison, Richland censuses for 1840 and 1850.

There is anoth Jacob Stover listed in the 1830 to 1850 censuses, who may be his father. The history of Madison County states that among the first settlers was a Jacob Stover from PA, who moved to Madison Conty in 1828. My gggrandfather and ggggrandfather were born in PA.

Any information anyone has regarding Jacob Stover or the Stover family would be appreciated. Thank you.

David Stover

My gr. grandfather, Charles E. Davis (1861-1916), died in Delaware County. He hung himself in his barn near Gaston IN. His marriage record to Maria (Annie)Jackson in Delaware County in 1883 listed his parents as William Davis and Clara Martin. His death cert says that his parents were John Davis and Cloey Martin Davis. I am not sure why there is a conflict, other than the circumstances of his death may have confused his wife. His obituray in 1916 stated that he was born in Madison County IN, but had lived most of his life in Delaware County. I know of one sister, Elizabth(Lizzie)Davis Hipes. I am looking for his parents and other siblings.
