I have come across a big blue hard back book of history of peru and miami counties of Indiana.Written by John Graham published 1877.Peru and Miami Co's.1885-1935 compiled by Omar Holman,lots of pics and very good info in it.I can do any lookups if anyone wants?Names like Richard Britton,David Hood ,founder of Peru w/his pic!Etc.Diane

Asher and Adith Shirley, Miami Co., IN 1873-1879

Abraham Lawrence Shirley and his wife America Idella (Snively) Shirley had five children born in Miami County, IN from 1873 to 1887. The first child, Asher Shirley, was born 24 September 1873. The second child, Adith Shirley, was born 14 January 1876. Both of these children died in June of 1879. Abraham and America lived in Peru, Miami County, IN but I need confirmation that Asher and Adith were born there. Both Asher and Adith were probably buried in Peru but I would like to know the cemetery where they were buried.

90th GLASSBURN Reunion

Hello fellow reaseachers, We are having our Glassburn reunion 90th on Aug. 17, 2008. It will be held on at Ma-con-quah Park in Peru, (Miami County) Indiana. This is a carry-in. and we eat at 12:00 (noon) (est) Indiana time and 1:00 Michigan time. Everyone is welcome. This reunion has been held since 1919. I have most of the reunion notes. I have type the notes taken. I can also email the notes, it is a very large file. Or I can possible put them on the message boards. if anyone wants this information. I recently came across an old family scrapbook that had belonged to my great-great aunt, Edith LEES. The LEES branch of my family was from the Peru-area of Indiana. One page of the scrapbook has some photos of various distant cousins gathered in front of a very old-looking cabin or house of some sort. The only label on the page was "Davenport Place". (The quotes were hers, not mine.) Is anyone familiar with a location called Davenport Place in Miami County (or perhaps around Peru somewhere)? I would appreciate any information you might have.

Can anyone tell me what the name of the cemetery for the Mexico Orphans & Old Folks Home is, now, 2008 ??? Phoebe (COLCLESSER) WARNER died here 8 March 1908 & was buried in this cemetery ... What is the name of the Cemetery, then & now ?? Her death certificate says she was buried in the Mexico Cemetery. Her daughter was Susan (WARNER) SIMMONS.

Hi -

I am interested in facts on Daniel and Hannah SEE and their children. They were born in Berks/Schuylkill Co., PA and moved to Miami Co., IN sometime prior to 1850. Their marriage in Berks Co., PA has Hannah's maiden name recorded as BURKHART, but I have a strong feeling that that was a mistake and it should have been BERKHEISER. Many of the baptismal sponsors for Daniel and Hannah's children were BERKHEISERs. I have been working on solving this mystery, but have had much trouble. I sent for the death certificates for two of their sons, one of which was not found and one which was incorrect. I believe that the family lived in Union Twp., or in the nearby area. If no one knows of this family, could someone at least tell me what newspapers or churches would be in the area? I am hoping that the obituaries might provide me with some help. Thanks again!

I am trying to find names for the parents of Ezra (E. W) Talbott b. 1832 in Ohio m. Susan Kimmell, 1856, in Crawford Co. Ohio. William Ferguson (b. 1788 in PA) and Elizabeth (Betsy Patton, b. 1801 in KY), married in Highland Co. OH in 1827 resetttled to Indiana after 1840 census along with several Ohio born children, probably including a son named William, a daughter named Emeline, possibly a John and James. Info exists that direct descendants continued in area of Peru and Logansport into the 20th century. I'm seeking info leading to any of those descendants of this Ferguson line.

I have census record for Samuel and Margaret saying she was born 1840 in Indiana. I have found one genealogy file that says she died June 1 1911 and is buried in Peru Indiana in the Elmwood cemetery.
I can find no records such a birth marriage or death on this couple.

MRS. EMILY LEES ORPURT

Mrs. Emily Lees Orpurt, 73 years old, wife of William A. Orpurt, died at her home, two mile south of Peru, at 11:30 o'clock Sunday morning, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be conducted from First Church of the Brethren, corner Fifth and Benton streets, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. C. R. Oberlin officiating. Burial will be made in Metzger cemetery. The body was removed to the Fetter-Allen mortuary for burial preparations and was returned to the late residence at 7:30 o'clock yesterday evening.

Mrs. Orpurt was born in Miami County, February 16, 1859, the daughter of the late Romanus and Myriah (Smith) Lees. She was united in marriage with William A. Orpurt, October 27, 1866. Mrs. Orpurt had been a resident of Miami County all of her life. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren.

Surviving besides the husband are four children, ten grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. The children are Mrs. Effie M. Dailey, William C. Orpurt, Mrs. Grace Fern Hann and Miss Mary Fay Orpurt, all of Peru; the brothers are Abraham S., Robert O., and William Lees, of Peru, Perry Lees, of Fairmount and the sister is Mrs. E. S. Howard, of Peru.

Rev. Daniel Nead, Eighty-two Buried Sunday Afternoon

Rev. Daniel Nead, 82 years old, a retired pastor of the Dunkard Brethren church in Pipe Creek township, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Stout, four miles west of Bunker Hill, Friday at 11:30 o'clock of infirmities caused by his advanced age.

Rev. Nead was a pioneer resident of Pipe Creek township, having resided in that community for 75 years. He was born in Ohio, on December 3, 1852.

Surviving are four children, Asa Nead, Elva Nead, and Mrs. Walter Stout, all of south of Peru, and Mrs. Mary Bowyer of Onward, and 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted in the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment was in Metzger Cemetery.

I'm looking for an obituary for my great great uncle William Tuey. He died in Converse, IN on June 16, 1960. There are rumors in my family that he had something to do with my great great aunt's death, however her obituary implies there was no foul play. He remarried shortly thereafter and the second wife also died suddenly so there may be something to the family rumors. Any help would be appreciated.

Father listed on her social security application is Leander and mother's maiden name is listed as Mary Wikel. Fara had several brothers - Theron who moved to Michigan, Loris who moved to Los Angeles, Irvin and others. I believe twins died at birth before Fara was born. A young brother died at about 8 years of age. Peru, Muncy and Peoria are cities I think grandma mentioned. Any info appreciated. Thanks.

There is no record of him before his marriage to Catherine Lyman or Lining or Lemming in Ohio. They moved to Miami Co. from Henry Co. by 1840. They lived in Richland Twshp. on section 15 where he was a farmer and served as a juror. In 1848 they sold out and moved to Texas. Any info. would be appreciated.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Miami County (Peru), Indiana as his home of record.

Born: November 12, 1922 Caucasian
Date of loss: October 1, 1950 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 69 families in Indiana that have not been located. There is one family from Miami County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Spent a wonderful afternoon today driving all over Miami County but did not find what I started out to find. I was looking for a cemetery called Sharrel/Sharpee/Charpie which the usgenweb site states is at section five, 100W and 250 south. It is not there. It is listed in one of the cemetery books at the Peru library which calls it the original Mount Hope Cemetery or the Egypt Hill Cemetery. Any one know where it is? Its not on Wallick Road by 250S as the directions state that we could see. Was looking for the graves of Abraham Shepler 1821 - 1891 and Sarah Wissenger Shepler 1823-1870.

It has been written that John I. Clingenpeel, son of Joseph and Margaret (Betz) Clingenpeel, was married to Mary Moss, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Lybrook) Moss on March 8, 1840. John was born December 26, 1815 in Franklin County, Virginia; he died November 8, 1887, at age 71.
They resided in Jefferson Township, Miami County, Indiana.

There are records in Preble County, Ohio which indicate John, son of Joseph and Margaret Clingenpeel died before 1846:

Children: Elizabeth late Klingenpeel, wife of Abraham Harris of Iowa; John Klingenpeel, dec'd, died without issue; Emanuel Klingenpeel; Gideon Klingenpeel; Daniel Klingenpeel; Joseph Klingenpeel; Benjamin Klingenpeel; Margaret Klingenpeel; Isaac Klingenpeel, dec'd, died without issue.

Preble County, Ohio Deed book 10, page 515, dated January 11, 1849. This indicates John is deceased, and the heirs named in his estate are his brothers and sister: Margaret, Emanuel, Gideon, Elizabeth Haines(?), Daniel, Isaac, Joseph and Benjamin.

I think this proves that Joseph, Jr. and Margaret's child was not the John who married Mary Moss. Can anyone identify this John as to parentage? Your help will be much appreciated.

Obituary of Cecile Marie Metzger Bowyer from Peru Daily Tribune of unknown date

MRS. J. WALTER BOWYER

Mrs. Cecile Marie Bowyer, wife of J. Walter Bowyer, Route 4 Peru, died at Dukes hospital at 1:25 a. m., Wednesday, after several months' illness of complications. At the time of death she was 41 years and three months of age.

She was born in Pipe Creek township January 25, 1904, the daughter of William H. and Clara Eikenberry Metzger. She was married to Mr. Bowyer at Crown Point October 15, 1920.

Mrs. Bowyer had spent the greater part of her lifetime in Pipe Creek township except for a short time when the family resided in Logansport. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are the husband; one son, John W., Jr., overseas; two daughters, Mrs. Richard M. Rhodes and Miss Elizabeth Bowyer, both at home; the mother Mrs. William Metzger; one brother, Donald P. Metzger of Route 4, and one sister, Mrs. R. C. Kloepfer, of Logansport.

The body was removed to the Wise funeral home.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed, pending word from the son, John, in the service.

The last Will and testament of Phebe Clymer of Miami Co.
I, Phebe Clymer, of Miami County in the State of Indiana, do make and Publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me made at any time heretofore made.
First – I direct that my body be decently intered, [sic] and that my furnal [sic] be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life: and as to such worldly estate as it has please God to entrust me with, I dispose of the same in the following manner to wit – I direct first that all my just debts and furnal [sic] expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible, out of the first moneys that shall come to the hands of my executors from any portion of my estate real or personal-- I do desire that all my property both real and personal be sold by my executor as soon after my decease as possible without sacrificing it. And for the purpose of effecting this my intention, I hereby vest my executor with full power and authority to sell, dispose of and convey by Deed my Real Estate in fee simple or otherwise in as full and ample a manner in every respect as I myself could do if liveing. [sic] It is my will and I hereby direct that the Proceeds of my estate both real and personal be distributed by my executors among my children & heirs respectively in the following manner to wit –
1st I will and bequeath to my beloved son John Clymer one dollar which with what he has heretofore received will be his share of my estate.

4th Fourth-- I will and bequeath to my beloved daughter Ivy Bunnell and her heirs three hundred dollars which sum I direct my executors to pay over into the hands of John Brower for her and their use, unless previous that time the said Ivy Bunnell and John Bunnell her husband shall have executed a deed to the said John Brower conveying their interest in a certain tract of land late the estate of Christian Clymer now deceased, to said Brower – but in case said deed shall have been executed as aforesaid, then said sum so bequeathed shall be paid over to said Ivy or her heirs.
5th Fifth I will and bequeath to my dearly beloved daughter Ara Graham and to her heirs one hundred dollars which with what she has heretofore received will make her portion of my estate

Wallace Taylor Dies in Indiana; Services Tuesday

Wallace E. Taylor, 52, 516 E. Jackson St., Peru, Indiana, died Saturday at 2:05 a.m. in Dukes Hospital, Peru. Mr. Taylor had been in ill health for 10 years. Mr. Taylor, a former Hamilton resident, had resided in Peru for 18 years.

He was born in Versailles, Kentucky, January 20, 1918, a son of Alvin and Florence Bishop Taylor.

He married Mary K. Weaver in 1945.

Mr. Taylor leaves his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Jerry Willis, Mrs. Roger Abercrombie, Mrs. Troy Rogers, all of Peru, Miss Juanita Taylor and Miss Teresa Taylor, both at home; a son, Charles Taylor, at home; a stepson, Leslie Sexton, Hamilton; a half brother, Walter Wash, Peru; four brothers, Thomas Taylor, Peru, Delbert Taylor, Willie Taylor, Dewey Taylor, all of Hamilton; four sisters, Mrs. Linza DePew, Mrs. Emma Hinkle, Mrs. Donald Perry and Mrs. Bowdon Napier, all of Hamilton; four grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Thomas Walling, Susannah Cryder near Mexico, Miami Co 1850's

I am seeking information on the family of Thomas Walling and wife Susannah Cryder Walling who lived in Miami Co, IN, near Mexico in the late 1840's to 1850's.

Susannah is buried in the old Mexico cemetery d. 1854. Thomas is not buried with her.

Thomas and Susannah had at least 3 children:

Jacob Cryder Walling, killed in the Civil War
James Stull Walling who married Tabitha (Talitha, Delitha) Richardson
Rebecca Jane Walling who married Riley Richardson and lived in nearby Fulton Co, IN.

I am seeking info on the death and burial of Thomas Walling who died about June 1869. He had a will filed in Fulton Co, IN that probated 16 June 1869. I am also seeking information on Susannah's death - perhaps a newspaper clipping etc.

I believe there are descendants of Thomas and Susannah still in the Miami Co, IN area today.

William Arison Windle was born in 1852 in Harrison County, Indiana. In 1877 he married Sarah Cordella Arrick in Converse, Indiana and they had several children--Effa, Claude, Eliza, Paul, Arison and etc. He died in Converse. I would like any information about William Arison Windle or his children. His grandchildren would still be living. I want to know where he is buried so that we can visit his grave. He was my great, great uncle on Windle-Windell side of the family.

I have some information on their five children, one of which is my ggrandfather. I know at least one of their children was born in Miami Co. but the family ended up in Elkhart Co. Would you have in your index of BOWMAN names, a John W. BOWMAN?
He was born 1847 in Ohio and married Catherine (Kate) MEARING on the 24 DEC 1878. They had (3) possibly (4) children, Jesse, Gertrude and Avery before Catherine passed away sometime in the late 1800's. He then married a J. Armstrong. I have been unable to find any records for this family except for the 1880 census. They lived in or around Peru, Butler area in Miami County. Any help would be appreciated.

Williams obit says he was born in Hawkins County, Ky. on Oct.8, 1850. There is no Hawkins County in KY. so I think the writer of the obit just made a mistake. There is a Hawkins County, Tn.

GenFest 2007

Marion Public Library is pleased to announce that GenFest 2007 will be held in Marion on June 8 and 9, 2007. GenFest originated at a picnic for genealogists in Delaware County about four years ago as a way for people to devote a couple of days to genealogy and to share knowledge. In 2005 the event expanded to a regional event at the Muncie Public Library. Organizations from surrounding counties were invited to share their resources during the two day event. Anderson Public Library was the site for GenFest in 2006.

An old-fashioned barbecue will kick-off GenFest 2007 on Friday, June 8. The Company Singers, a Civil War period vocal group from Huntington, will perform on the Jay House lawn beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Indiana Room at the library will be open until 8 p.m. to accommodate researchers.

The Indiana Room will reopen on Saturday, June 9 at 9 a.m. Both the library and the Carnegie Building will serve as an exhibitors’ mall for both genealogy organizations and vendors to sell their wares. Shirley Fields who heads up the marriage records indexing project for the Indiana Genealogical Society will give morning and afternoon demonstrations of that project in the computer lab. A shuttle bus will be available at posted times to take researchers to visit Grant Memorial Park and The Historic Estates of Serenity cemeteries. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day. A food vendor will be on site for researchers to purchase lunch.

All events are free except for the purchase of food. People from eleven states have registered to attend GenFest 2007. Registration forms are available in the Indiana Room at the Marion Public Library as well as on the library website: www.marion.lib.in.us/genfest/genfest07.htm. Seeking information regarding of a pair of twins, Gene and Ruth Ellen Chaplin who died on Sept 19, 1957. They are supposedly buried in the Courder Cemetery near Chili Indiana in Peru County. When I requested a copy of death record from the state health dept for one of the children, I was told it was not on record. The twins were the children of Ralph Chaplin and Mary Ellen Boyer Chaplin.
