It seems that my grandfather was mistaken about Russell Ellis. I finally found that he was not killed in the war, but instead died on October 6, 1963 in Crawfordsville. His stone lists him as a member of the 315th Reg H Co - so he is the man I was looking for. My grandfather, Wm Herrin, of that same Co. was taken prisoner and assumed his friend Ellis was dead - he even apparently had traveled to Crawfordsville to find the Ellis family, but with no luck. If anyone knows of family for this man, it would be nice to have a WWII photo of him, if one exists - or even a photo of his grave to show my grandfather.
