Here is a summary of what I now know of Russell Ellis:
Russell Ellis (no middle initial), service # 35356499 served with the 79th Infantry Division, 315th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company H – a heavy weapons company (machine guns and mortars) (The payroll of July 31, 1943, taken at Ft. Forrest, TN indicates that he was a Pvt and honorably discharged per Par 5 c(6) AR 615-360 and WD Cir 395, July 17, 1943. The payroll also shows that he was reduced from Pfc to Pvt per CO#7 on May 22, 1943. He had been AWOL from May 9, 1943 to May 17, 1943 and the army deducted $10.00 of his pay. Following his discharge, he returned home to 122 ½ East Market St. in Crawfordsville.
More on Russell Ellis: his enlistment records show that he enlisted June 6, 1942 in Indianapolis. He was from Montgomery Co., IN. He was born [March 30] 1906. He was single, without dependents and had attended grammar school. He was 68” tall and weighed 165 pounds: Further research revealed that he was listed twice in the 1910 census, once in Crawfordsville, IN on April 19 with his father, Daniel Belva Ellis, who was born on December 8, 1873. At that time, they lived at the home of Russell’s grandmother, Mary Barbara (Cougar) Ellis (born March 12, 1852 at Waynetown, IN and died Oct 28, 1928 at Crawfordsville). She was the daughter of Christopher [Christian, Jr.] and Amelia Cougar, and she was the widow of William R. Ellis (born December 16, 1847 and died June 25, 1904). They had been married in March of 1873. At the time the 1910 census was taken, Russell’s sister, Gladys lived there also. She was born in 1902. Also living there were Russell and Gladys’s uncles, Ira, Charles [a Spanish-American War vet], Bert, and Ralph [later a WWI vet] and aunts, Lucy [later her married name was Cooper and lived in St. Louis] and Kate [later her married name was Wilhelm] [another brother, Arnet, was later a WWI vet]. Russell and Gladys were also listed on April 22, 1910 living with their mother, Miss Mary (Stout) Ellis (born in Ohio in Oct 1881 and shown as divorced with two children [Russell and Gladys]). The 1910 census listing Mary, Russell and Gladys was of Center Township, Indianapolis, Indiana. Mary was not working, but had two lodgers – Guy Millikan and Robert Duckworth, who were both tile workers, aged circa 28. Previously, in 1900, Mary had married Daniel Ellis in Circleville, Ohio. During the 1900 census, Dan and Mary lived in the home of Daniel’s parents, William and Mary Ellis in Crawfordsville. According to her obituary, Mary (Stout) Ellis left Dan in 1909 and had run away with Guy Millikan to Indianapolis. Three years later, she apparently had separated from Millikan and committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid on April 26, 1912.
In 1920, Russell lived with his father, grandmother and uncles, Ira, and Ralph. At that time, Russell, aged 14, worked in a poultry factory. He was mistakenly called a son instead of a grandson, as Mary B. was the official head of the household, although he was there with his father, Dan. By 1930, Russell lived with his father, Dan and a cousin, William Ellis, in Crawfordsville.
Russell’s father, Dan, registered for the draft during WWI. The records show that he was blind in the left eye. He was a poultry dresser for the JacquesHavens Poultry Co. in Crawfordsville. He lived at 407 Lane Ave. in Crawfordsville. Dan Belva Ellis died February 8, 1948 at Crawfordsville. His daughter, Gladys married Floyd Smith and lived in Oakland, CA in 1948 and Concord, CA in 1963. She is likely the same as Karen Gladys (Ellis) Smith, born Feb 1, 1902 in Illinois [likely Indiana] and died March 11, 1991 in Sonoma, CA, with her mother’s maiden name given as Stout.
The cemetery listings for Montgomery County, Indiana and Russell Ellis’s obituary reveal that he died unmarried of a heart attack on October 6, 1963. He was said to be a painter and decorator. He had lived at the Monon Hotel in Crawfordsville before his death. Russell was buried in the Masonic Cemetery at Crawfordsville. His obituary stated, and the grave marker shows that he was born on March 30, 1906 and that he served as a Pfc in Co H 315 Inf. [Regiment, 79th Infantry Division] during WWII.
