Welch family, Benjamin, Tolbert Tobias, Acksha

Looking for any information on this family. My ggg grandparents were Tolbert (Tobias) Welch and Martha Ruckman. Tolbert born in Ohio about 1810. In the 1850 census, Acksha Welch is living with Tolbert's family, with her 2 children. I have found a marriage for Acksha in 1835
to John Williamson, and another in 1855 to Thomas Burk. I
am looking for any evidence that Acksha was the brother of Tolbert, and also that their parents were Benjamin and Altha Welch, who died in 1839 and 1842.

Photographers in Crawfordsville ca. 1890

Does anyone know of photographers named Willis & McQuown that operated in Crawfordsville in the late 1800s? I have a photo of my 3ggrandparents, who lived in Alamo, that shows the name Willis & McQuown or Willis S. McQuown at the bottom. I'm wondering about the date the photo was taken and when this photographer(s) operated in the area. The InGenWeb Montgomery page lists a biography for an Abner Denman Willis who was a photographer in Crawfordsville and died in 1898.

Just trying to verify that this is correct so that I can approximately date my photo! Thanks.

This was a general news piece that I found that may explain the deaths of families or family members during this time frame.

"Diphtheria at Crawfordsville

Crawfordsville, Ind., Nov. 17. Diphtheria of a malignant character is raging in Crawfordsville and vicinity. The public schools were closed today, to remain so until the pestilence abates. The fatalities are numerous in the rural districts, and often families lose every child in a few day’s time."

Davenport Morning Tribune
Davenport Iowa
November 18, 1891
Seeking information about my gggrandparents Mathew Daly who was born April 1836 in Ireland and emigrated in 1858 According to the 1900 census he resided in Madison, Montgomery, Indiana and died there on June 11, 1918. He married Anna May Holmes who was born in May of 1835 in Ireland and also emigrated in 1858.According to the 1900 census she still had 3 of 6 children living; one of which I only know is my great grandfather James E. Daly. I would like to know if they had any other children. If they had any other family members that joined them there. Also what would be the name of the cemetery at that time period. I am assuming that they were Catholics. Thank you Jim Vaughn gonevaughn@yahoo.com

Mary Jane McKINSEY/Sam NIXON/Henry NEWKIRK - A Triangle of Confusion

What happened to Henry Newkirk and Mary Jane McKinsey Newkirk?

Did they really marry? No records found for marriage or death of either, nor any Census records after 1860. I have a picture of a tombstone someone sent said to be of Mary Newkirk who died in 1879 and was buried in the Phanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Fountain Co., however, the name and birth year on the stone is totally unreadable and there were many Mary Newkirks.

Henry Newkirk was born 12 April 1832 in Fountain Co., IN. In 1850 he was residing with his parents in Jackson, Fountain Co.

In 1856 He was residing in Taylor Co., IA in the home of John and Nancy J. Krout, also from Fountain Co., IN, with Mary Jane (McKinsey) Newkirk born 1829 and S.H. Newkirk (Nixon) b. 5 April 1854.

In 1860 he was back in Jackson, Fountain Co. residing with his wife Mary Jane, and sons Samuel (Nixon)b. 1854, John A. Newkirk, (born 19 Sept. 1857) and Thomas B. Newkirk (b. 18 Aug. 1859). In Feb. 1863 a son Thomas Newkirk was born and possibly a daughter Mary c. 1865. There is no further record that I have been able to locate for Henry or for Mary Jane. Did they divorce or die? There is a Henry Newkirk that married Sarah Bailes in Fountain Co., IN March 3, 1865, is this the same Henry? I found no Henry
married to Sarah in the 1870 census.

1870 Census has Samuel H. Nixon residing with Wm. & Kate Dice in Wabash, Fountain Co., possibly John A. Newkirk residing with David Booe family in Ross, Vermillion Co., IL, Thomas Newkirk residing with John and Mary Cedars
in Montgomery Co., James Newkirk not found.

1880 Census John Newkirk residing with Margarile Wright family in Logan, Fountain, IN; Thomas is found in the home of James and Hannah Hoff in Wayne, Montgomery Co., IN, James now in the home of Wm. And Kate Dice Van Buren, Fountain Co.
Samuel Howard Nixon Ancestors Lost, Now Found

I've spent years on this family with a lot of help from people in Montgomery and Fountain Cos. giving me suggestions.

Samuel Howard Nixon Ancestors Lost, Now Found
My grandmother Ethel Nixon of Waynetown, Montgomery Co., the daughter of Samuel Howard Nixon (b. 5 April 1854 in Iowa) said there were as many stories about what happened to his father, Samuel Nixon Jr. (b. 1827 Ohio), as there were a people who had the stories to tell. She had heard everything from "just disappeared" to headed west to California for gold. Samuel Nixon and Mary Jane McKinsey are listed as the parents of Samuel Howard Nixon. Samuel Howard Nixon's obituary, death certificate, family history, etc., all mention his mother, Mary Jane McKinsey or McKinzie and father, Samuel Nixon and half siblings named Newkirk. All records, except the 1860 census, which showed him born in Iowa, as was his oldest half-brother John, indicated he was born in Indiana. This seemed confusing to me because I could find no record of marriage or divorce in IN for Mary Jane McKinsey and Samuel Nixon Jr.

Mary Jane McKinsey then shows up in IN with Henry Newkirk (1860 census). If her husband disappeared, would she have been remarried with another child within two years? Possible, but I could find no marriage record for her and new husband Henry Newkirk either. I had not been able to find a marriage record for Samuel Nixon Jr. and Mary Jane McKinsey in Indiana and now know that there was no marriage. I could find no marriage record in Iowa for Mary Jane and Henry Newkirk. Were they married?

Mary Jane McKinsey was living in Page Co., Iowa with her mother Elizabeth Stonebraker McKinsey Linebaugh, step-father John Linebaugh, and siblings in the 1854 Iowa state census. There were several Fountain Co., IN families who migrated to Page Co., together so it is possible Mary Jane Newkirk, her mother and sisters and step-father, John Linebaugh were in the group.
I am trying to locate any information regarding the ancestry or siblings of George McKinsey (McKinsie) born circa. 1798, possibly in Ohio. He married 6 July 1826 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., IN to Elizabeth Stonebraker b. 1807 Ohio. They had 3 daughters: Mary Jane b 1829, Hepsey Ann b. 1831 and Rebecca McKinsey b 1832 in Fountain or Montgomery Co., IN. An April 2, 1833 notice in a Montgomery Co. newspaper indicates a subpoena was issued in a divorce case by Elizabeth Stonebraker McKinsey and returned “endorsed, not found”.

I have been unable to locate this George McKinsey in any census record. This is NOT the George McKinsey that married Leah Weeks. Elizabeth then married 10 August 1835 in Montgomery Co. to John Linebaugh and the family moved to Page Co., Iowa.
I am searching for the families of 2 soldiers that were POW/KIA in the Korean War. When they entered service they gave Montgomery County, Indiana as thier home of record. Thier remains were never recovered

Soldier: JACKIE LEE MURDOCK
Born: Sept. 15, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss; July 6, 1950, POW

Soldier; DONALD R SECHMAN
Born; May 11, 1931, Caucasian
Date of loss; July 20, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. These are 70 families from Indiana that are missing and two from Montgomery County.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
CAMPBELL-WARD Marriage 1906

Their wedding of Ethel E. Campbell and Jesse S. Ward was written up in the Crawfordsville Daily Journal of 16 February 1906:

Ward-Campbell
Thursday evening at 8 o’clock at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Campbell in the presence of one hundred immediate friends and relatives, occurred the marriage of their only daughter, Ethel to Mr. J. S. Ward. Promptly at the appointed hour Mrs. Dr. Swan began the wedding march to which the bride and groom entered the parlor unattended, taking their places under a large floral arch suspended between the double doors. The ceremony was an abbreviated form of Episcopal service and was performed by the Dr. Paul C. Curnick, of the First M. E. church. The bride was attired in a beautiful gown of white silk trimmed in all over lace and ribbons and made high neck and long sleeves. She carried a shower bouquet of brides’ roses. Immediately after the ceremony the bride and groom led the way to the dining room where a two course luncheon was served. The home was beautifully decorated for the occasion, the parlors being adorned with pink and white carnations. The dining rooms looked beautiful one in red and green and the other in pink and white.
Trailing vines were used effectively and the tables were lighted with white carnations and red roses. Those assisting in the dining rooms were Misses May Swearingen, Grace Green, Grace Shafer, Madge Catterlin, May Barley, Floy Smith, Zula Ward, Neva Ward, Ethan Linn, Mabel Robins, Ruth Fletcher and Atelka Clement. The bride is one of Crawfordsville’s best girls and is very well and favorably known having graduated from the city high school in 1902, also having been a student at the Crawfordsville Business College. While the groom is of an estimable character and one of Montgomery county’s best young men. He also graduated from Crawfordsville Business College in 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Ward will be home to their many friends after March 1st at their home which they have prepared two miles east of Crawfordsville.
From a 2000 article in the Princeton (IN) Daily Clarion:
"Pioneer Family Chronicled"
"... The Crawfordsville woman's search for answers soon led her on a remarkable journey. It's a journey she has documented in a new book called 'Fond Food & Memories, A Tribute to an Indiana Pioneer Familiy."
"The 400-plus-page book is a collection of biographies, rememberances and recipes that preserve the past by honoring the Servies family's journey through time."
"... began the book in 1937 shortly after her grandmother, Frances Elizabeth Servies Lane died."
"More than 100 mailings went out to relatives asking for favorite recipes and memories for inclusion in the book. The response was overwhelming, as letters, stories, photo- graphs and recipes appeared."
"... 'The Servies familiy has so much history in Mongomery County ... the servies family is unique to Montgomery County. It is a deviation of the Sarvis name. It was William anderson Sarvis whose name became known as "Servies" that all servies generations are named after today."
"... William Anderson servies ... first took up residence in Montgomery COunty in 1831, and remained there until his death."
Ebenezer Jackson of Montgomery Co., Indiana is a descendant of James and Abigail Fairchild Jackson of Wilkes Co., NC and the father of James Jackson is conjectured to be William Jackson b. 1736 NJ. This conjecture can be confirmed if we can find a living direct male descendant of Ebenezer and have that person take a Y-DNA test. The test results can be compared to the already obtained test results for William Jackson.

Hello-I am looking for information on my gr. gr. gr. grandfather Joseph Gray's
background. I know he was buried in the Crawfordsville area having died in the 58th yr. of his life; I actually have the original funeral notice but there is no date or specific family info. included. It does mention him as a former county commissioner. I know his son, my gr. gr. grandfather Robert Ritchie Gray was born 8 Nov. 1821 from original family Bible pages. I have some other info., but I am really specifically looking for Joseph Gray's background: parents, birth yr. and place, etc..
Can anyone help? I'd love to hear from you!
Barbara Thompson

My search for the parents of Nathan L. Graham continues. Through census records it has been proven that Joseph Houston Graham is not his father. I found the following and wonder if there is a connection:

Federal Census 1850 Scott Township, Montgomery County, Indiana Census
GRAHAM Adam H 59 Farmer Pa
Elizabeth 56 Kentucky
William M 19 Farmer Kentucky
James F 21 Blacksmith Kentucky
Elizabeth 20 Kentucky

Nathan L. Graham was born about 1827 in Indiana – probably Montgomery County (some say Kentucky) and died before 1880 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and Mary M. Beard who was born about 1832 in Indiana and died January 08, 1876 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana at age 44 years – they were married November 11, 1852 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Nathan was a pioneer merchant of Crawfordsville.

Any help with this family is appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

Joseph Houston Graham, Montgomery Co., IN 1840 Census Lookup

I wonder if someone could look up Joseph Houston Graham for me in the 1840 Census. It might prove his lineage...

What I have:
Joseph Houston Graham born 1803 in Bourbon County, Kentucky and died in 1884 probably in Montgomery County, Indiana and Sarah ‘Sally’ Ann VanCleave born May 26, 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky – married August 16, 1827 in Montgomery County, Indiana. He was a farmer - They were also in the in 1850 Census for Montgomery County. Joseph and Sally Graham had 10 or 11 children:
I am thinking he may have had a first son named Nathan L. Graham born in 1827 but I cannot prove that. I am hoping this census will show him as the son of Joseph and Sally.
Known are:
1. John T GRAHAM b: 1829
2. Margery E GRAHAM b: 1831
3. Forgis F GRAHAM b: 1832 in Montgomery County, In
4. James W GRAHAM b: 1835
5. Margaret A GRAHAM b: 1837
6. William H GRAHAM b: 1840
7. Mary J GRAHAM b: 1842
8. Martha E GRAHAM b: 1844
9. Emily F GRAHAM b: 1847
10. Joseph F GRAHAM b: 1849

Any help with this family is greatly appreciated.
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

I am trying to find the father to Caleb Conner who lived in Montgomery County. My gr gr gr grandfather , Patrick could possibly be a brother to Caleb. Are there any records stating who Caleb's father was? This Caleb was married to Susannah Teeters. A book states that Caleb was related to the Conner Prairie bunch, which is also supposedly true for Patrick.

He was married three times that I know of, to a Clara Thomas, Ora Vivian Ring and Leona Smith. My grandfather was born in 1914 or 1915 to Ora Vivian Ring Munson and Ora Marion Munson. I can not find any record of the birth or the marriage of said parents. I am at a dead end and would really like to clarify the information that I have with actual records so that I can get the correct children with the correct parents and have the right dates for all events. I would really appreciate any information.

Thanks a million,

Naomi Ohman (my mother was a Munson)

The only marking on the matting is HMS and 25 then is say Hirshburg Portraits Crawfordsville, IN. I would like to get these photos to the families they belong. If you have any clues how to figure this out please let me know. It might be graduation pics. Thats my best guess.
Joseph H. Graham & Sarah Van Cleave of KY and IN

I am looking for information on Joseph H. Graham. It appears that he was born abt 1803 in KY and married Sarah Van Cleave first. They had several children. Sarah was born 1807-08 in Shelby Co., Kentucky - m. 9 Aug 1827 in Shelby Co., Kentucky - at some point they moved to IN and he was a farmer.

What I can find is the 1850 census in Montgomery County, IN:
GRAHAM Joseph H. 47 Farmer Kentucky
Sarah 42 Kentucky
John T. 21 Farmer Indiana
Margery E. 19 Indiana
Forgis F. 18 Farmer Indiana
James W. 15 Farmer Indiana
Margaret A. 13 Indiana
William H. 10 Indiana
Mary J. 8 Indiana
Martha E. 6 Indiana
Emily F. 3 Indiana
Joseph F. 1 Indiana

Their son, if indeed he was their son, Nathan Graham was 23 and living with another family - working as a clerk, which makes since - he was later in dry goods and had a store. He was born Bet. 1827 - 1830 - probably 1827 in KY and married Mary Beard born Bet. 1830 - 1832 in IN - m. November 11, 1852 in Montgomery Co, IN.

He is my direct ancestor and I would like to verify that he is their son? Any help with that?

lindajcox3@hotmail.com
Looking for information on:
Miss Graham (2 of her 5 siblings were born 1865-67) married John Courtney (may have been Dr. John O. Courtney) – they had 2 children:
1. Robert Courtney
2. Mary Courtney married John Merrill.
I believe this all occurred in the Crawfordsville area of Montgomery County, Indiana.

Miss Graham's parents:
Nathan L. Graham of Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and Mary Beard of Indiana who probably died January 08, 1876 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana – they were married November 11, 1852 in Montgomery County, Indiana. He was a pioneer merchant of Crawfordsville.
They had 5 children:
1) Mary 'Matie' B. Graham who first married Dr. Frank West.
2) Letitia 'Letty Lee' Lincoln Graham born April 06, 1865 in Crawfordsville, IN who second married Dr. Frank West.
3) Nathan Lew Graham born about 1867 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and died September 20, 1935 in Middleton, Orange County, New York.
4) Lucy Graham (probably unmarried).
5) Unknown Miss Graham (see above).

Any help with this family is appreciated.
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

In an attempt to get information together for historic purposes regarding the house and barn, I would like to find out who planned and built both structures. Carl and John Greenburg, my grandfather and father, bought the property from Edgar Sentman in 1948. Mr. Sentman bought the property from Richard Cording in 1902. It is my current understanding that the house and barn were built after the Sentman's purchase of the property. Any information is appreciated.
