in 1906 Dr. Clair M. Rice and wife Mabel Burgess Rice opened a medical practice in Rose Lawn and stayed there for 10 years at least. In 1920 census they are in Lincoln. For some reason, they leave Indiana and move to Bates County, Missouri and are there in 1930. Does anyone have any information on this family and especially why they left Indiana and located in Missouri. Please email me at abbi3sheffield@yahoo.com. thanks

I found Walter's obituary. He was living with daughter Sarah Baker at the time of his death, in Roselawn. Living in Roselawn also at that time was my great great Grandmother Bertha. Also living in Roselawn was 2 of his brothers. So I am sure that if the obit was not correct then they would have not put it in the paper.
It states his fisrt wife was Susan. 2nd wife was Amanda Brandon, mother of Bertha, and 3rd wife was Elizabeth Hendricks, mother of a John Cox that died as infant.
No mention of Tena at all. I too had Tena as his 2nd wife until I got the obit. I changed all my info. The obit or the same info is in my Public Tree on Ancestry.com Walter Buell Cox and Lucinda Jane Sallee.

I am looking for any info on Amanda (Brandon) Cox. She is the 2nd wife of Walter Buel Cox. They were married in Dec 1873 in Iroquois County, Illinois. They had a baby girl in Roselawn named Bertha Elizabeth on October 8, 1874. I then find Walter in Greene / Lawrence County Missouri in 1879 marrying for the 3rd time.
I am hoping that someone can find something on Amanda. Walter came back to Newton County and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in April 1931. Quite possible that Amanda is also buried in Roselawn Cemetery. All old records were destroyed in a fire.
Thanks in Advance
Cindy

Looking for Family Bible

My Great Great Uncle Jeremiah "Jerry" Newell died September 23, 1972, in Newton County, Indiana. There was a family bible that belonged to his mother Emma Rachel "Snow" Newell. About the same time that his belongings were auctioned off, this bible came up missing. I do not know if it was sold at the auction or not. My Aunt heard that a man from the Monon, Indiana area might have purchased this bible. If anyone has any idea where this bible is please contact me. I don't want to get it from you if you really want to keep it. I would just like a copy of the genealogy pages within it. There may be plenty of info that would answer quite a few questions in our family tree.
It also might have been donated to the local library.
Cindy

In the cemetery's transcription there are 2 graves written as such: Cox ?
But unknown who they may be. According to public record 2 former trustees handling the cemetery had house fires in which all records were burned. So we may never know. Their son Walter and many other children are buried there.
Comd summer time I amy walk and plot out the cemetery unless I can get a plot map before hand.
Cindy

Lucinda Jane is buried in the Roselawn Cemetery as per her death date and a death notice in the Newton County Enterprise dated one week after her death. Said she died of Typhoid Fever and old age. So I am assuming that Walter is buried there also, as well as most of their kids and quite a few of their grandkids.

I found the obit of Nettie in the Newton County Historical Society in 1919 on microfillm. It states she died in DeMotte and is buried in the DeMotte Cemetery. Unfortunately there is no info to be had as far as the Methodist Church says, no record of her burial there in the cemetery, and I have yet to find her death certificate.
Cindy

I have a Samuel Snow that married a Mary Harriet Kuhns or Kuntz on March 4, 1903 in Newton County, Indiana. She went by the name Harriet and the name Mary. They had 7 children: Bertha Bell, Edith, James, Effie, Clifford, Raymond, and an Unknown child.
I think that Samuel and Mary Harriet got a divorce. I don't think she died until after the 1930 census. He remarried to a woman by the name of Katherine.
Any info on this family is appreciated.
Cindy

I was wondering if there is anyone who would be kind enough to obtain an obituary for me for my g-g-grandmother Emma L. Robinson, died 29-Oct-1890. She was buried in North Star Cemetery and buried next to her is her baby "Little Arnie" who died 12-Oct-1874 whom we never knew existed. I have been looking for her for many years and this obituary just might be able to help me break through my extremely big brick wall.
I thank you in advance for your kindness.

I have a photo and a small blurb of info on Berdice in a local history book if you would like to contact me directly at kidclerk@aol.com.

Valerie,

Thanks for the offer of info, but I am not related to this family, I just enjoy helping those looking for their family info.

For a birth record I would check Hamilton Co., Iowa since that is where her parents were living in 1870. The roadblock to that would be whether Iowa recorded births that early. I do know Indiana didn't record births until 1880 and that wasn't enforced until much later. Another avenue might be by tracing her father's family. Maybe some relative on that side has that info, possibly from a bible with births and deaths recorded.

Another source would be if you could find her in the 1900 census. That is the only census that actually states the month and year of birth. I tried locating her in the 1900 census and came up empty. Keep in mind, in my expericence with the census the birth info can be off by as much as 5 yrs give or take and also birth location is sometimes off. This all depending who the informant was and is they knew the exact info they were being asked.

Good Luck in your search................Karen

A couple of notes here. Depending on where the person lived when they went to the county home to live, when they died their remains were sent back to that township for burial. I have several burials in the Riverside Cemetery at Brook for people from Iroquois Twp. who died at the county home. Additionally, the Doran Cemetery is where many of the indigent residents of the county home were buried when they weren't sent to another township. There is a row along the west side of the cemetery, all of which are unmarked. During dry seasons, you can vividly see the outline of the graves...there are many. Lastly, there is a county home book either at the courthouse or historical society that was a record of residents of the county home for part of the years it was in operation. Occasionally, when one died, the date of death and place of burial was recorded. I discovered some pauper graves at Riverside Cemetery in this manner.

Thank You for the Offer to help!
I am looking for the burial location of a few ancestors that were in Newton county.

Mary E (Helmick) Howell d: 1-14-1901 Morocco, her death cert. does not give a cemetery, date of burial or funeral director. NOTE: her death cert. shows HOWELL, however the 1880 and 1900 census both show her as HEISTAND, and she did re-marry in Newton Co 10-16-1871 to a John HEISTAND. Mr. HEISTAND does not show up in the household on either the 1880 or the 1900. She does not appear as HOWELL or HEISTAND on any of the on line cemty listings. Since she was "alone"
I'm wondering if the county buried her, without a stone, and that's why I can't find her on any of the listings??
Her second husband, John Heistand, passed after her and is buried with his first wife Delila (Dill) in Oakland cemty.

Austin or Otis Dexter
His wife Huldy Dexters death cert. shows she was a resident of the "poor asylum" at her death 4-30-1917 I have located her on the Doran Cemty listing as wife of Austin, NO STONE.
However, I have been unable to locate her husbands burial location, and do not know if he was in the poor house with her, or when he passed away.

Any help on these two would be truly appreciated!!
Thanks Again!!

Hello,
I'm a professor of Music History at the University of Hawaii and I am doing a research for an article on Berdice Blye. She was a pianist and a violinist apparently born in New York around 1870. I found her death and cemetery records recently, and I saw your message regarding Joseph M. Blye. Berdice and Joseph, along with Annie P. Blye, are buried in the same cemetery in Fairlawn, and the cemetery records say that Annie and Joseph were married. From other sources (long story)I know that Berdice lived with her mother (I think that's who she is) in various cities in Illinois and Indiana.
I also need some help to find Berdice's (also called Birdice, Birdie)exact birthday. Did you happen to find more info on Joseph Blye?
Thank you.
Valeria Wenderoth

Thank you so much, Karen.
All starts to make sense. I have a lot of information about Berdice's career and I have also concert reviews from a few newspapers. If you need any of that I' like to share.
However, I still have to find the exact date of her birth. Any suggestions?
Valeria

Just an update incase you come back to these messages. Cole who was communicating with you passed away unexpectedly, probably not long after his message. I found him after the fact and spoke to his mother. My grandfather is the Robert T. Gemmell married to Sarah Bennett Thompson. I have managed to untangle some complicated links in the family and soon will be traveling to Scotland to make sure I have things in order. Contact me if you would like to know more about the Templehouse Gemmill or Gemmell family. I can go back as far as 1474.

Deno, Boudreau and Senesac families

Looking for any information regarding Theophile Deno and Belle Boudreau (my GGG grandparents). Theophile died in 1881, apparently of TB (consumption) and is buried in St.Anthony's cemetery. (Was there an epidemic of TB during the 1880s-1900's in Indiana? It seems that a lot of my relatives died of TB during that time period.) Belle delivered a baby girl six months after Theophile died- my GG grandmother Eva Deno. Belle married again in 1889 to Isaac Senesac and lived in Kankakee, Illinois. Belle and Isaac had four more children;
Emma, Ida, Lillian and Edward. Would be willing to share
information.

I am adding more info to my tree on Ancestry.com. If you eneter Sallee Preble in your search screen in community for ancestry.com you will find that the info for Urana is wrong. I never found her name as Amanda. I never found her in Newton County, but I found her in Preble County Ohio marrying Isaac Clear in the name of Anna Talles. Then I found her in Randolph County marrying Robert Smiddy. One census says Lincoln Post Office but it is not Newton County. I found her in census in Cass County and Howard County. Then I find one died in Kokomo and the other in Peru. he died in 1885 and she died in 1904.
