If you go to the Noble County IN site, found at http://gen.nobleco.lib.in.us and click on the Whan collection, check obits, marriages, cemeteries, census, etc., you will see info on the Harters that you mentioned. Also check the federal census to see where they were later on.

Harter James W, 78, LaOtto, died Sunday at McCray Hospital. He was born Dec. 27, 1905 in Noble County, the son of James and Hester (Richards) Harter. He married Ethel Kelley Feb. 7, 1924

I wanted to let you know that my records for the Otmar Bender family says the Monroe Bender was born in 1849. His brother Joseph was born in 1814 and died in Aville, IN in 1887.
If Monroe was born in 1849 his age for leaving home at 14 would work out. I hope this helps.

This is where the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Convent had their cemetery--it's different than the one on Old SR 3 for parishioners. I don't know if it's possible that this land was used prior for burials. You can find the assessor information on the site at: http://beacon.schneidercorp.com/FileData/NobleCountyIN/PRC20...

Heckman Field---Early Cemetery near Avilla???

I just read in passing about Heckman Field, an early, apparently informal cemetery near Avilla that was used by Catholics before the Catholic cemetery was "built" in Avilla.

I've looked for a long time for the burial place of Mrs. Wessel, wife of Frederick Wessel, who passed before 1860. I wonder if she could be buried in Heckman Field.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this place, and if there are any records of burials there? Any info appreciated.

This is probably the source of your info about Switzerland:

from History of Noble County published by Goodspeed and Blanchard in 1882 History of Noble County by Samuel Alvord, and History of NE Indiana, The Lewis Publishing Co, 1920 Some transcriptions by Annette DeHoff and CJWhan found on Noble County GENWEB site 4/8/2002

Monroe Bender was born in the Swiss Republic March 24, 1814. His parents, Otmer and Osa Bender, emigrated to this country in 1838 and settled at Shelby, Richland Co., Ohio. Six weeks after their arrival the mother died. In the family were eight sons and four daughters. The father made Richland County his home, where he was well and favorably known. Monroe Bender received but a limited education and when fourteen years of age went to Norwalk, Ohio, where for five years he worked at whatever he could get to do. He then worked in a mill at Bellevue, Ohio, after which he entered the employ of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad, working in the shops and as fireman on the road. He also worked in the shops of the Pennsylvania Railway Company at Fort Wayne., and then went to Ohio and until 1860 was engaged in the mercantile business. He then came to this county and has since been engaged in farming and stock-raising. He was married to Miss Fanny Stigmire in 1861. She was born in Switzerland October 16, 1836, was baptized by Father Stoker, and from seven to fifteen years of age attended school in her native country. She then learned the dressmaker's trade, at which she worked carefully, saving her money until twenty-three years of age, when she came to this country alone, and until her marriage with Mr. Bender made her home with friends in Seneca County, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Bender have had a family of five children, viz: Samuel F., Amelia V., Emma L., Frank M. and Fanny M. Mr. Bender owns 280 acres of land, which is nicely improved and well stocked. he is a Democrat and he and family are members of the Catholic Church at Avilla. Allen Twp.

I am keeping one eye on this thread, as one of the daughters of Monroe and Fannie was Amelia Victoria Bender, who married William John VANDERBOSCH, of my Vanderbosch clan. I can't add much on the Benders, as it's a side line for me, but I'm interested!

Here is an account my grandmother had from old records, for anybody else who might stumble across this:

THOMAS SINGREY, eldest child of Jacob, was born in Blatimore, Maryland, on March 12, 1801. He moved to Richland County, Ohio in 1816, married Catherine Ackerman of Knox County, Ohio and located in Troy Township, Morrow County, Ohio, where they had five children born to them.

Thomas was a man of commanding presence, a superb physique and an old school Baptist and an old line Jeffersonian and Jacksonian Democrat. With the whole family, Jacob, John, Andrew Jackson,* Harvey, and Amy Ann, he moved to Noble County, Indiana in 1858. They lived two miles east of Albion, the county seat, had a beautiful home, and were noted for their virtues and hospitality.

*My great-great grandfather.

Would anyone in the Noble County area be willing to do a search at the local library to see if any articles exist on the criminal trial of my ancestor?
The ancestor in question is Glenn (Glenford) Winkler and the trial was held in Noble County on 16 May 1928. I have a court transcript but it give no details about what lead to the charges. I am hoping a newspaper will describe an arrest and what brought on the charges. I'd assume the arrest was no more than a week prior.

Thank you!!!

Zulima ( Pauline) was my grandmother. She was married twice- Ray Musser and Dale Whiteman and had a total of 3 children :

Douglas Whiteman, Roy Musser and Donald Musser ( Donald is my grandfather)

Zulima passed away at the age of 35 in 1933 - the story I heard was that she was on a chair and fell -

There is a bit of mystery surrounding her... so I am actively researching a few things but her mother was Lauretta Deems Gierhart but her father is the mystery.... I show on several documents a conflicting father but always listed Lauretta as the mother.

Tried your email address but wouldn't go thru...

Rebecca
Samuel and Almira Wright of Noble county were my great great grandparents. But in all actuality there were two couples in that time period that were named Samuel and Almira Wright in Noble County. In my family it's Samuel Wright and his wife's maiden name is Almira Porter. And on the Samuel and Almira previously mentioned it's Samuel Wright and Almira Duesler. My great great grandparents are buried in Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier. And Samuel Wright parents, and grandparents and siblings are buried in the Wright Cemetery not far from Albion.

Not sure if you found this information yet, but thought I would supply what I found anyway:

VanBuskirk Wayne (though the cemetery listing says Vayne) E, 94, died July 26, 2001 at Hickory Creek Extended Care in Kendallville. He was employed at Kenosha Auto Transport for 20 years as a truck driver. He was a custodian at First Assembly of God in Ligonier. He was born on June 24, 1907 in Fort Wayne to Jesse and Grace (Koch) VanBuskirk. He married Kathryn Davis on Dec. 14, 1946 in Fort Wayne. Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janet VanBuskirk of Fort Wayne; 3 daughters, Delores Sheak of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jacquelyn Poling and Pamela McCreary of Kendallville; a stepdaughter; a sister, Esther Spitznaugle of Fort Wayne; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a brother, Randall; and a sister, Ruth. Graveside services Monday at Lake View Cemetery: Plot: Section O Row 12 ^ 7-28-2001

Below is the link to the 1930 Census for Flora and Vayne. It appears that had just gotten married prior to the Census and were living with Flora's parents.

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=6224&ii...

Also, I have attached the information from FamilySearch.com on Flora and Vayne's marriage license, so you should be able to get more information from that on.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XXJH-8TJ

Something interesting I found, but was limited to information because I am not subscribed to the site is an article from the Biloxi Daily Herald from the June 30, 1943 publication stating:

denied a habeas corpus petition over the custody of two children with the understanding the children would be returned to Indiana and entered in school in petition was filed by Vayne E.
Greetings,

Did Kendallville have their own newspaper in the 1940s? If so, I am seeking an obituary for a woman named Geraldine Marie Lee (nee Hogan) (September 24, 1902-November 17, 1948). She died in Kendallville at age 46. Given her young age, I am wondering if a full account of her passing might be found in the city newspaper.

Any assistance you can provide is appreciated.

Chris Brennan
cristoir@optonline.net

1965 Death in Kendallville, Indiana

This is a very strange question, and I'll give some history on this. My mother recently announced that my brother had a different father, but she couldn't recall his name. I've tried searching the obituaries for the area, but I've came up with nothing so far.

There was a man by the name of Jimmy, and in 1965 between January and Wednesday he died from something to do with his head. It was "enlarged" my mother said when he died. He had a son, Jimmy Jr and a wife that my mother thinks was called Mary. They lived on a chicken farm and he worked at a foundry during the week and the chicken farm on the weekend. The man we're trying to locate was this man's brother, they think his name was Herschel. She can't remember the last name, but thought it was something like Caudill...or anything like that.

If anyone knows anything about this I would appreciate any assistance.

Daniel and Louisa Felton

I am looking for information on Daniel and Louisa Felton. The information I have suggests that they were born in Mecklenburg Germany. Daniel was born in 1805, died in Noble County 1871. I've found Daniel's grave in the Cosperville Cemetery. Of Louisa I have no information. Their daughter Emma Amelia married William Jefferson Cummings. Emma and William lived in Ligonier, Indiana. The Felton's are my GGGrand parents. Thank you for your help

I posted a picture from Spring Beach in Rome City, Indiana, dated September 2, 1911, (actually a postcard with postmark in June 1912) showing several unidentified individuals at a lakeside pier labeled "Pauley's."

While it doesn't identify any of the individuals, it's fun to see what life was like in the good ol' summertime of 1911 in Rome City. Evidently, this was a popular place to go in the summertime. My STEVENS line from Fort Wayne and Chicago certainly enjoyed visiting there, judging from the postcard.

Picture at the bottom of the page at http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2011/10/happy-birthday-w...

Enjoy!
