Henry Harkless died of mushroom poisoning

I haven't posted for a long time, but I wanted to reconnect with some of you with whom I've lost contact.

I am descended from Samuel and Amelia Harkless shown in Madison Twp., Clarion County, in the 1860 census. At that time they had offspring living with them: Amelia C. (9), Henry (20), Oliver (14), and Sarah J. (17).

Henry was my great grandfather - and he died in Mercer County in 1869 from eating poison mushrooms. His wife, Susan Soliday Harkless, was pregnant with my grandfather at that time. She lost her husband and 2 little girls to the mushrooms, Anna and Laura. An older brother, George, survived and later married Margaret (I think Parks). Susan Soliday Harkless later married Danny Davis and had additional family.

My father was Ray Harkless, deceased in 2003. I've not had the heart to pursue the family history much since his passing, but feel free to email me if any of this sounds familiar. theresaharklesswoods@yahoo.com

Harker, Harger or Harriger family in Wayne Twp, Noble County abt 1870??

I am searching for any help with the Harker, Harger or Harriger family (there are many spellings) that seems to have been in or near the Wayne Township, Noble County area around 1870. The father was Fredrick..but may also have had the name of Christian or John (I cannot figure this part out) and was born in Germany. The mother was Sophia Elizabeth Uhl and was born in Ohio but was of German descent. I cannot find the family in the 1860 census. The 1870 census shows some of the children being born in Indiana starting in about 1860...but I am not sure if that was in Noble County (I assume so).

By the 1880 census, in Wayne Township, the family seems to be destroyed and I am confused (the last name is spelled Hoeriger in this census). Elisabeth is listed as a widow and is living with only 2 of her children. A couple of them would have been old enough to have been married, but not all of them. In the 1900 census, the mother is living with one of the children, Edith - who married John Collier (Edith may also have had the name Loueda?)...and this census shows that the mother had 10 children but only 5 were still living.

Can anyone tell me if there was an epidemic that went through Wayne Township just prior to 1880? Can anyone provide any insight into this family? It appears that some of them ultimately went to Michigan but some seemed to have stayed in the area according to some of the Indiana records that are online. I am not a direct relative to this family...I connect through Sophia Uhl...but I would like to try to figure out what happened. I would appreciate any help at all. Thank you so much!

My messages to Judy bounce so I will post here. I am seeking someone to check grantor/grantee indexes for Noble Co. Indiana. and to copy results for me. I am seeking any info re. Zelophehead Owen & his son, Ira Owen. Zelophehead Owen does not appear on an Indiana census but family lore states that he purchased land there in 1848 and deeded to his children. By census, Ira Owen was living in Orange twp. Noble Co. Ind. in 1860. Ira and family were back in Williams Co. Ohio at the time of the 1870 census.

Willing to pay research fees, copy fees, mileage, postage for any info., I need proof that Zelophehead Owen was the parent of Ira Owen. Please contact me as I need only one searcher. Thanks, Rose

Huge favor needed on Lookup in Noble Co for POTTS

hello Noble Co. researchers.
I am trying to take a theory and turn it into fact. My Benjamin Potts born in 1774 PA, and lived in Jefferson twp, Noble Co. IN from about 1838 up to his death in 1854. I am looking for any documentation which would have his middle name as Stephen or perhaps even a "S". I already know that he was noted as a nephew to Isaac Potts of PA, and that grandchildren of Isaac's had also lived within Noble Co.(still looking for their names as well.)I am trying to connect a John Potts Jr, as Benjamin's father. John Jr also born in PA in 1738, had fled to Canada during the Revolutionary war and was known as a Tory, british loyalist. Benjamin's son John Potts, who also lived and died in Noble Co. was born in Canada, which makes me believe that I am on the right track. HELP would be appreciated.
Thank you
Sharon Corcoran of Buchanan Co. Iowa

I'm trying to locate some information on the Boszor and Schenher families (both I have been told were from Noble County, Indiana). I've received some information on the Schenher family, but more is always welcome. My grandfather is Keith Schenher and his parents were Edmund Schenher and Hilda Boszor. Her parents were George Boszor and Harriet Ihrie. Now, when I had put that information into my tree, I received about five generations back on Harriet's side of the family. I'm a little bit stuck on George Boszor's family information though. I have him listed as living from 1872-1955 if this helps. Any information is greatly appreciated!!

I don't know if he is related, but can remember my grandmother taking me to visit him at the Noble County "Poor" Farm just east of Albion, IN. It was located on the first road north off of the old Half-way Pavement, now known as the Albion Road, when going west out of Albion. Very interested in any information that I might receive. I am unable to get Ollie out of my mind, so I guess I am supposed to reasearch him. Will share what I know regarding the surnames listed. Thanks. Becky

I'm looking for any info on Gladys M Shockley (b 1922 in Indiana) who married Kelton Spencer (1904 in Ohio to 1965) about 1942 in Indiana. I'm especially interested in children, etc.

Kelton is my grandfather's (John Spencer) half brother. Kelton is one of 3 siblings sent to an orphanage in Perry Co Ohio after their parents died about 1915. A 4th child, Hazel Violet, a baby, was adopted by Edna and William James in White Cottage Ohio. I have newspaper notes from about 1941 that Kelton visted her adopted parents, sometimes with Violet and sometimes by himself. He lived in Noble county IN, the papers report.

I have lots of info on the Spencers that I'd be happy to share.
I have a David Karrick who married a Sarah Bilger both of who were b. abt 1855. David hailed from Columbiana Co., OH and then Hardin CO., OH and Sarah was from IN. I believe Noble Co. or nearby.
David was the son of Emmanuel Karrick and Anna Bricker. Anna remarried after her husband's death to a Rufus Brayton. I noted there are quite a few Brickers in Noble Co. I wonder if or how she is connected to any of them.
I have found the Noble Co. Obits and a listing for David's death in FL being noted in the Simon Journal. His date of d. was 2-1-1935 at 80 yrs. of age.
I also found a brother for Sarah named George who passed 1-24-1916 after a fall from a tree. Sarah came from FL to attend his funeral. George was a farmer and resident of Swan Twp. all his life. His wife was Matilda and they had threee daughters; Mabel, Edna and Grace and two sons; Ralph and Virgil. George and Sarah also had two brothers named Andrew and Jesse of Swan Twp.
I have a small amount of info not posted here but would love to connect with someone in reference to this BILGER-Karrick-Bricker family.
I'd like to figure out how David Karrick made it to IN from Hardin Co., OH.
David and Sarah had the following children;
Wilbur David, b. 11 Aug 1893 (my daus' lineage)
Jesse Emmanuel, B. 29 Apr 1888
Pearl Grace
Florence May

Pearl married a Franklin Miller Thompsom and FLorence May married a David Darling.
Be glad to share and work with anyone!
Micky

Louisa Speckeen and Kimpels of Noble IN-Lookup?

I'm trying to connect the Louisa Speckeen of Noble Co., IN who lived in Kendallville when her husband Frederick Poppy died in 1782. My ancestor Louisa Speckmier/Speckmeyer lived there for awhile with her husband Henry Kimpel.. along with son William Kimpel. But on her listing from Noble, IN her last name was Speckeen.
Cosperville nee Springfield (and the Pierson family)

The 1880 US Census includes Springfield, Noble, Co., Indiana. The cities/towns finder on INGenWeb says that Cosperville was formerly called Springfield.
Can anyone tell me when the name change took place?

I am researching descendants of Thomas S. Pierson who migrated to Noble Co. from Ohio about 1835. The line of particular interest is Thomas S. (1811-1890), Aaron Edward (1840-1904), Clark Carey (1865-1944) and Theresa/Tressa (1894-1936). She married Bitterle and Moen.
Clark Carey Pierson arrived in Duluth, Minnesota about 1890 and established his family there. Apparently, his marriage to the former Laura Clemens later failed as she is in Jun 1900 back in Lake Co., Indiana with their children. The children returned to Minnesota and lived with or near their father, Clark, following Laura's death in 1902.

I have more family information than I have detailed here. One exception is I can find nothing on the Clemens line.

Anyone interested in sharing stories?
Don
I just received his death certificate and it states that place of burial was Kendallville Indiana on June 22, 1940. His father is buried in South Medford, but that was a dead end. Is there anyone who can do a lookup for me around Kendallville in Noble County? Please accept my gratitude and thanks ahead of time.

I love photographing gravestones and abandoned buildings. One building I haven't been able to get much information on. It has a marker on the building that reads: Brimfield School No.2 Est. 1921. I have been to the Noble County Central Branch Library and I have found a few photos of students of the school and teaching licenses from teachers there but no other information.

I am wondering why this school was closed down or any stories about the school. It is such a large building I was surprised to see it was built in 1921 and is abandoned with little information found on it. It is located in Brimfield on the west edge of town on a lot that is completely overgrown with trees. In the summer the only way you can see it is if you know what your looking for. I would love any information you have on this school. Please reply here or email BeckieMDay@yahoo.com

I am looking for information on Johannes Peter Wilhelm Becker he was born in Germany, 7/19/1827 and died in the US on 11/27/1904. His father was Johannes Becker. His mother was Maria Catherina Schmidt she was born in Prussia, 9/5/1794 and died in the US on 7/23/1859. I have lots of Becker information after they came to the US, but I have ran into a brick wall as far as information in Germany. When they moved to the US it was Johannes and his mother. They moved to Noble County, Indiana. If you don't have any information would you know where I might find any? I will be glad to share what information I have. I will take what ever information I can get and as far back as I can get. Thanks for your time and help.

Thanks again,
Mike Ridgway

In Elkart twp, Noble Co, Indiana on Sunday morning, July 9th, of heart disease, Ruth, wife of Isaac Smith, died age 65 years, 10 months, and 1 day.
The deceased came to her death quite suddenly, having only a few hours prior been in the apparent enjoyment of good health.
She was born in the State of Virginia, but emigrated to Ohio at an early age, and resided in that State [Licking Co] until 1864 when she removed to this county, accompanied by her husband and the family of her sons, Abram H. & J.B. Smith.
She was a kind hearted generous woman, and derived much comfort from the bestowal of her motherly affection upon those whom she fondly called her own.
She was a member of the Old School Baptist Church for 40 years. Her remains were interred in the Legionier Cemetery on Monday last, Elder Z. Thomas officiating.
