Descendants of Moody Creech and Nancy Walker

Moody Creech moved from Hawkins Co, Tennesee to Putnam Co Indiana in 1837. Two yrs later he moved Owen Co, Indiana where he remained until summer 1853. That year moved to Effingham Co, Illinois where he died in 1854. The family returned to Owen Co Indiana afterwards. There were eleven children: 1.Elizabeth Jane Creech married Samuel Farris 2.Jesse Creech married Rosetta Kitchel 3.Anne Creech married Edmund Minnick 4.William Nelson Creech married Nancy S. Porter 5.Joshua Walker Creech married Martha Daniels 6.Isaac H. Creech married Elizabeth Hancock 7.Mary Ann Creech married James M. Winans 8.James A. Creech married Martha Baugh 9.Edward J. Creech married Rebecca Hayman 10.Mahala Creech married Stephen Montgomery 11.Benjamin A. Creech married Matilda Wagner
For most of these I have the next two generations, but nothing on anyone living today. I do know that Jesse moved to Texas, Mary Ann to Missouri, James to Monroe Co, IN. Edward to Delaware Co, IN and Mahala to Monroe Co, IN. I do have most of the descendants of William Nelson Creech since that is my line. His daughter, Elizabeth A. Creech married Allen Henson. They are my great-great-grandparents. Charles Nelson Henson and Frances Sue Houghton are my great-grandparents. Harris Gaston and Mildred Henson are my grandparents. Charles Gaston and Lois Coble are my parents. Creech/Henson/Parrish/Gaston/Coble/Hendershot - my roots are definitely in Owen County.
Would like to find out if there are descendants of any of the Creech families living in Owen County today.
Thanks.
I am searching for more information on the John and Effie Heath family from Owen County Indiana. They had 8 children, John Calvin, Peter, Hannah, Jemima, Susan, James, Ella, and Delilah. In particular I am interested in Delilah Heath, she had a son named Alonzo we presume was out of wedlock. His name was Alonzo Heath born in 1873. We found him in the 1880 U.S. Census Living with his mother Delilah in her brother James's household. He does not show up in the Census again until 1910 as he left home at an early age and ended up in Kansas where he started his family. My wife is a Great Great Grandaughter of Alonzo. Our main goal would be to find out who Alonzo's father is. His mother Delilah married in 1881 to a man named William Neese we wonder if he could be Alonzo's father? If anyone out there has information, pictures, or just some other idea where to look we would be truly grateful!!!

Thanks,

Glenn Roberts

M.M. Blair, Undertaker in 1920's

Does anyone know about the M.M. Blair undertaking business in Owen County in 1920? I would like to know if there are any records of the funeral home in existance. Is it still around or did it change hands and still exists today under a different name? I have a possible ancestor who died in Marion Township in 1920 and M.M. Blair is listed as the undertaker on the death record. Unfortunately the death record doesn't give other info I'm looking for and there is no newspaper obituary. The funeral home records are my last resort.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

Jordan

Hartsock info 1826, and births

I am looking for the birth of Daniel Hartsock and his wife Keziah (Kizzy) Dent. They were to have moved to Owen county in 1826,he lived on land southwest of Quincy, IN. and helped build the first mill Creek which now feed Cataract Lake Leiber Park. They had at least 3 children. I have them named Enoch Hartsock, Washington (Watt) Hartsock, Barbara Hartsock, I also have seen a Mitilda Hartsock as another child. My information states that the sons moved to ILL, about 1840, it is also stated in my info that Enoch had a son named Leslie Hartsock, and his son was Mandell Hartsock and lived in Marcelle, ILL.

Miller

I am interested in the Jacob/John Miller born OH ? and wife Elizabeth Miller of Louisiana that settled in Owen Co. In. Their daughter Martha Eliza Jane Miller married Robert A Newport in 1875 in Spencer. The Newports are buried i Grandview Cemetery in Terre Haute, IN. I can't find where the Millers are buried.
I found a letter in the Spencer Library that a great grandaughter, Clara Brown wrote. She says her granparents lived with her family in their later lives. She mentioned John/Jacob could have been called Yankee Bill and ran a hotel in Spencer.
I think Clara Brown died in 1960-1970's and her brother also lived and died in Clay Co., IN. I have found no records of any marriages for them.
Please, I would like any family/burial information on this Miller Family.
Thank you.
Sharlynn

72 Pictures taken at/near Plainfield, Danville, Hendricks County, IND and Onarga, Iroquois, ILL

Greetings from Farnam, Nebraska

I have downloaded 72 pictures that I purchased at an estate sale
that included items from Ida Bell OWEN Thompson, who was born
and lived in Hendricks County, IN and Onarga, Iroquois County, IL
until her marriage to Joseph Wesley Thompson of Farnam, NE. The Jonathan OWEN and Asenath Hunt Bales OWEN family lived in Onarga in the 1870's-late 1880's. They owned property adjacent to the Larch Farms
and Edwin L. Wheeler. Matilda 'Tillie' Wheeler, daughter of Edwin L.
Wheeler of Onarga married Isaac Jay OWEN, brother of the above Ida Bell Owen Thompson. The OWEN family is connected to the following family names....COX, SUMMERFIELD, RICE, RALSTON, THOMPSON, WHITE, and others.

Some of the pictures are identified while others are not. Many
were taken in Plainfield and Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana while others were taken in Onarga,
Iroquois County, Ill, many by H.W. Lawhead of Onarga and Gilman.

Some of them are of groups of young people who might possibly graduating classes.

Is there any way that they might be posted on the Iroquois County site? Would it be
better to have each picture seperate or will the grouping that I have in the URL below work.

My thought is that I want them as visible as possible for identification purposes.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/keystoneproductions/

Thank you,
Betty

I'm looking for any and all information on soldiers from the 19th Indiana Infantry. This regiment served in the famous "Iron Brigade" during the Civil War and fought many battles in the east. My primary goal is to locate and photograph their final resting places. When possible, I replace the old military headstones when they are in bad condition. Company I was mostly made up of Owen County men. If you have any information on these soldiers before, during or after the war feel free to e-mail me. I'm willing to share any and all information I have on the 19th Indiana.

Thank you,

Phil Harris

Samuel Rea, the mystery

Hi I'm back and still looking for my Rea's
I was helped a great deal last time so I thought I would make my plea again.

Samuel the older had Mary ??? and Eleanor Wilson as wives
with 17 children between the 2:
George, Finley, John, William, Eli, Nancy, Delena(Delema), Sarah, Mary Ellen, Lucy, Susie, Mariah, Samuel McClellen, John, and possibly nother Nancy

Samuel the younger had 2 wives Mary R. (I believe the R may be Rachel) Coats and Eva Belle Coats.
Between these 2 there were at least 8 probably closer to 15 children.
I have Malcolm, Troy, Gertrude, Myrtle, Samuel Clifton, Guy, Fern, and Maudetta.
Most of these are attributed to Eva Belle.
Now here is the puzzle. According to what I have been able to piece together Eva Belle and Mary may have been sisters, and Mary had other children with Samuel M.. She died or was divorced( I think died as you will see later) and he married Eva in 1895.

According to the 1900 census for Marion TWP, Owen Co., Indiana District 115, Sheet 2 however Samuel is a widower with 6 children. One is Samuel Clifton pereviously thought to be Eva Belle's, Furhter Eva Bell is listed, with her brother and one son Troy, as living in the same household. Now this isn't all that strange if they were married, but She and her brother are listed as in-laws and her son as a nephew. her Ocupation is servent.

I am currently trying to look up the 1910 census to see if I can clarify, but no luck so far.

Many of the Rea offspring spent their whole life in the area and many are buried in the Rea Cemetary.
(BTW does anybody know where this cemetary is located?)

I would love if any one could shed some light on this.

I have records that indicate my g-g-g grandmother was Mary Ann Mosier, from either Owen or Greene County, Indiana. It is possible that her parents were John and Mary Ann Mosier. She married Mathias Prewitt(Prewit, Pruett, Pruitt) who left her with three children, James, Joel and William. It is thought that he went to and died in Oklahoma. He is buried in Whitley County, Kentucky. James Edward Pruett was my great grandfather. If you know anything about this person, please answer. Also, it is believed that Mary Ann Mosier's mother maiden name was Ashpaugh. Don't know any given name.

MALINDA was the daughter of CHRISTOPHER and NANCY (HUDDLESTON) HOCKMAN. GEORGE and MALINDA remained there to raise their children.

GEORGE died between 1880 & 1900. Can not find a record. MALINDA died 1901 and is buried at Hicks Cemetery in Owen County.

I have been unable to find GEORGE's parents.

GEORGE and MALINDA's daughter NANCY ELIZABETH married GEORGE BUSH in Owen county.

Their daughter MARY married ALBERT G.
I am looking for information on the Defore and Alexander families of Owen County. Specifically, where did Stephen Defore (1774-1844) originally come from (before Kentucky)and where are he and his wife Mary Ann "Polly" Camden Defore buried. He lived in the county from around 1830-1844. I have found his son George W. (1820-1879) in the Defore cemetery in Owen county. Also info regarding any of his relatives in the county like his other sons John, James, Pleasant, James, King Hiram. or daughters, Elizabeth Defore Bush, Nancy, or Mary Ann "Polly" .

I am also looking for information and relatives of Samuel Alexander, his wife Sarah Dennis Alexander, and his son Thomas Alexander. Samuel moved to the county on or before 1819 and passed away in Nov 1832 or 1833. HIs wife Sarah passed away in about 1830. His son Thomas had moved to Coles/Edgar County, Illinois by 1834 with his inlaws, Richard and Catherine Morris. Some of his other sons followed Thomas, but some like Abner, William, and James Alexander stayed in or around Owen County. I would like to know where Samuel and Sarah were buried and what their real death dates are. I would also like to know anything about Alexander, William , and James as well as Samuel's daughters, Nancy Alexander Beaman, Sarah Alexander Bartlett, Jane, Elizabeth, Susannah, and Penninah.

According to a letter written in the 1940s this woman was born in Owen County Indiana 19 Aug 1851. She married a man named Alvaris Elwood Davis in 1876 (location and date unknown). In 1880 (date and location uknown) she married a man named James Harvey (Harry) Poland. They had a son in Wayne County named Oro Delphine Poland born 20 August 1883. After the death of her husband, she married a James Longsdon in 1890 (date and location unknown). She died in St. Louis, Missouri 30 Jun 1930. (I need hard proof). Supposedly she is the daughter of Frances Marion Milam born in 1828 somewhere in Indiana. Frances died in battle during the Civil War at Ft. Hindman 11 Jan 1863. (I have proof that this event happened). Louisa's mother was supposedly Elizabeth Steele who died in 1852.

Does anyone have ANY information that can help me piece all of this together? I have hit a block.....

On Oro's birth record in Wayne County, IN it lists a lady named Alice Elwood Poland as the mother......

Is Alice and Louisa the same person??

Please email me at leespach@charter.net

It has been awhile since I listed and with all the new people now searching, I thought it might be a good time again. My first proveable German ancestor was John Henry HARRIS born in PA., on 2/1804. Our family traveled over the years from there to OWEN county and other points in SW Indiana. My GGrandfather, David H. HARRIS left Daviess County about 1895 to establish a home here in Indianapolis, IN. During his time in SW Indiana, brothers, cousins and sisters spread out to surrounding counties including OWEN County. I am searching for info on those HARRISes. I hope someone can help. Thank you
Fred HARRIS
Cornelius Hayman (Maryland), father of Henry (Owen Co., IN)

Researching additional information on the children of Cornelius Riggin Hayman of Worcester and Somerset counties in Maryland. He was a son of John and Edith (Riggin) Hayman. Cornelius married Anne Smith in 1799 Somerset County, Maryland.
Cornelius had a son named Henry (b 1813) who married Sarah Anne Saucer or Sowser about October 16, 1834 in Somerset County. Henry's family ended up in Indiana shortly after marriage. Henry and Sarah lived in Owen County. A number of Hayman familes in Owen and Clay County, Indiana derive from Henry's line.
Cornelius died about 1851 in Somerset Co., MD. Am looking for information about his other children.

HARRIS Family in OWEN COUNTY

Hello listers. I haven't listed for awhile so I though I'd try again. My German HARRIS family's 1st proveable ancestor is Henry HARRIS DOB 2/1804 In Mifflin County, PA and DOD 2/1881 in Tusc. County, OH. From there our family traveled to Tusc. County OH where my GGGrandfather Geo H HARRIS was born 1/1830 and while ther had my GGrandfather David H HARRIS, DOB 3/1851. They then traveled to the "German Pocket" in SW Indiana and George died in 2/18/1867 from his Civil War wounds and is buried in Raglesville in Daviess County, IN. David went on to own the HARRIS House Hotel in Odon and several city blocks prior to his move to INDY and death 7/1946. While in ODON, his brother Samuel Frederic was a physcian in Odon prior to his death during the TB epidemic.During the late 1800s the other brothers and sisters continued to marry German/Swiss spouses in the area and spread out into Greene, Owen, Vigo, Martin and Morgan counties, hence this query to OWEN County. I am looking for cousins(?) and others that might shed some light on this family trek. I have a lot of old German letters and would be glad to share. To name just a few, we married into the Correll, MAY(BACH), SOMMERS, RUFENACHT, WINKLEPLECK and Deetz families. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
FRED HARRIS
Abraham was a Pvt. in Co. E. 149th. Reg. of the Indiana Inf. during the Civil War.

I am trying to locate the parents of Abraham J. Davis who was born 1830 near Jamestown, Monroe Co., OH. He moved to Owen Co., Indiana in 1851, married and purchased land in 1858. He also received 45 acres of land from George DAVIS (don't know if relative???) for maintenance in 1858.

The only promising parent for him in Monroe Co., OH is Abraham DAVIS. This Abraham was on the Ohio Tax lists for 1809 & 1810 in Belmont Co., OH. In 1820 he was on the census records for Belmont County and in 1830 he was in Monroe County. His first wife was Nancy RUBLE and his second wife was Mrs. Sarah WINDLAND. Sarah might have been the mother of Abraham J. DAVIS.
The Marriage of William H. Watts and Rose B. (last name unknown)

A Rose B. married a William H. Watts prior to 1900. I believe that they were both living Owen County, so it makes sense that they were married there as well. They had two children (Cordelia and Vera Watts) Rose B. was later married a to a William John Iles. I am attempting to find out the surname of Rose B. to learn more about her ancestry.

Any assistance/information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

John C Oman, Levi Oman in Owen Co, IN

Looking for a link to Levi Oman of Western NY area. He had a son named John Oman who was in the IN area after Levi's death. Oman is creatively spelled...sometimes Osman, Orman, Omans, Omen, etc.

Levi Oman left three children: a John Oman, George W Oman of Whitley Co, IN, and a girl. They all inherited from Uncle John Oman, br/o Levi Oman.

There is a John C Oman bur in New Union Cem, Washington Twp, Owen Co, IN - Civil War records. There is a Levi Oman (could be s/o John C Oman or brother) bur in Mast Cem, Marion Twp, Owen Co, IN - Civil War records. Your marriage records show Levi Orman m 27 Jan 1842 Clemintine Burges. Brief records given in National Graves Registration Database.

This has been a long, long search to find John Oman and his descendants. I don't even have a birth date for him but court records place him in IN ca 1848.

T. L. Franklin Farm

Clippings from the Owen Leader dated abt. 1954. Photocopies available from the Owen County Public Library.

Mystery Farm No. 18

Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Franklin, Spencer route one, are the owners of the mystery farm pictured in last weeks [sic] paper.

The farm was purchased by Mr. Franklin's father, T. T. Franklin, in 1900. He bought the farm from Willie Culver, and about forty years ago named it Whispering Pines because of the many pine trees growing on the property.

Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Franklin have lived on this farmland since 1929. During this time they have remodled [sic] the house and surrounding buildings, and only a few years ago built the large, new barn.

The farm consists of about eighty acres, with twenty-five acres in corn, wheat, oats, and clover. Mr. Franklin is in ill health, and is unable to do his own farming, but hires someone to do his work. He finds that his favorite crop, corn, is about the most profitable.

He also keeps about twenty-eight head of beef cattle, and about sixteen sheep.

Mrs. Franklin is the former Viola Roberts, and she and Mr. Franklin will have been married thirty-five years in May. They are the parents of three children: Claude Franklin, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs. Orville Wrightsman, Spencer route one; and Mrs. Gilbert Frame, of Bloomington. They have six grandchildren.

Mr. Franklin, who has a hobby of collecting old guns, is a member of the Spencer American Legion, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Bloomington.

Please help with Owen County Records: Kulp/Culp

I'm wondering if anyone can help me locate potential birth and/or marriage records for some of my ancestors/relatives that lived in Owen County. My great great grandpa's older sister, Ellen, may have been born there around 1857. The family lived in Oldham County, KY in 1860, and by 1880 they were (back?) in Owen County. The parents were Thomas and Mary Kulp/Culp. They had kids named Ellen (b. about 1857 in Indiana), Julius (born Jan 8, 1861 in either KY or IN), William (born Nov. 1863 in IN or IL) and Thomas (born c. 1865 in Indiana). I can't find the family in the 1870 census, and Ellen is not living with them in 1880. I figured she died until I found them in the 1900 census (in Knox County) and Mary was listed as having 4 children, all living. Therefore I'm hoping there might be some sort of marriage record for her in Owen County in the mid-late 1870s. Thomas totally disappeared in the census after 1880 also.

Hi Haton researchers,
I’ve been researching Haton for over 10 years for the last eight to 10
months have been tussling
to some new information put on ancestors family trees. At first glance
this information seems to answer much of the information I’ve been
looking for a long time. My problem with the information was that there
was no proofs or very little proofs given and the inability to
communicate with the authors. As I look more closely at this information
it becomes evident that the author has mixed families, I personally have
found proofs back to George W. Hayton. I have some information from Gayle
K. Blankenship and Harley Haton and this information has stood up to
strong scrutiny by myself and others..The information that I have found
on the Taylor’s
saves to fit much better. Also the author’s have more proofs provided.
The information on Elizabeth who married George seems to fit the
information I have found in visits to Washington
County Virginia still more work is necessary.
Jim .

Hi All Hayton Researchers:
Yes I have to agree I've not seen information like this before myself it would appear to be coming down a different line of Hayton's or Taylor's
I've attached to more URL, which it needs ancestors to access it is mainly dealing with the Taylor's is certainly looks good on establishing who Elizabeth Taylor was. In my studies of these families it would appear that the Taylor's Haton's and Crabtree's and others involved in these lines
same to be moving constantly west looking for land. As far as the Taylor family is concerned the people putting these web sites up
keep referring to Taylor Bibles that have been archived in various areas. In my trip into Virginia Washington County I was able to gather papers on legal transfers showing all of these families into reacting and in one case stating that the Haton's and Crabtree lived next to one another on the Holston river off so I have copies of the Douglas register which shows the birth of several of the Haton children from George and Elizabeth.
I'll showing these two were married the no indication of Elizabeth being born in GOOHLAND CO. as many have shown. I too am excited
if this is true, I have been looking at this information for several months now and is why I am enlisting the help of other Haton Taylor researchers
Jim

http://awt.ancestry I to .com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=satcover&id=I113106#s1

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=patand...
