Jacob GATES was born in Philadelphia June 6, 1846 of German parents, who came from Baden, Germany. In 1852 his mother purchased a farm in Marrs Twp., Posey County, Indiana.
When he returned from the Civil War, Jacob met Catherine SCHNUR(daughter of John Schnur and Martha LOSER) and on September 9, 1869 they were married in St. Johns Lutheran Church. (Today known as the Lippie Zion Church, St. Phillips, IN.) The children born to the family were Joseph Christopher, Mary "Rosa", John Andrew, Rudolf Lewis, James William, Benjamin David, Lewis Albert, Charles Frederick, George Edward, Henry Garfield, Mary Elizabeth, Charles Jacob, and Everette Raymond. Around 1890, the family moved to Saline County, IL where Jacob was a farmer and also served as a circuit preacher. Jacob died March 1, 1931 and is buried in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Harrisburg, IL.
