Does anyone have information on an Elizabeth Cain m. John Cain. According to family stories, he d. in Greencastle, In. She subsequently married a Garrett Sutherland/Sutherlin? I believe she was also a Sutherland before she married. She and John had a daughter, Emma and possibly a son, John,Jr. She and Garrett ended up in Clay Couty, Il. Any info would be appreciated.

I am searching for the family of John William Dalton who was born Aug 10 1916 in Putnam County Ind. His father was Robert L. Dalton, who was born in Kentucky. John ran away from a children’s home in Putnam County when he was 17 years old and moved to Dayton, Ohio. He changed his name to James H. Johnson and upped his age to 19 years old to get a job. His name was not changed legally. I never knew his identity until after his death. He had a brother named Thomas & sister named Dorothy.

I am 67 years old and in declining health and would love to get any information that anyone has for me.

Woman, Two Men Alleged to Have Beaten Eldery Man to Death.

GREENCASTLE, Ind. August 17.-
Samuel McCammack, his wife, and Alec Grimes, all residents of Jefferson Township, are being held here under a murder charge as a result of the death of John Brooks, in the Putnam County Hospital, Saturday night. McCammack and his wife and Grimes were arrestedSaturday by Sheriff Leslie Sears and his deputies, after it is alleged they had beaten Brooks unconscious. Following their arrest, a preliminary hearing was given them before Mayor Charles F. Zeis on a charge ofassult and battery with intent to murder. Following the death of Brooks, the charge was changed to murder.
McCammack was said to have beaten Brooks with a fence rail while his wife and Grimes held him. Brooks visited the McCammock home to collect money said to have been due to him for cutting wood for McCammack. The three defendents probably will be held in the county jail until the September term of court convenes, when their trial dates will be fixed by Judge James P. Hughes.

Putnam County death records

I ordered and just received a "Death Certificate File Information" from the Putnam County Health Department. I had been told by another researcher that the birth place of the father and mother were on Putnam County death records. In fact another researcher said they got the information I wanted from this particular death record. It did not appear on the record I received. How difficult is it to get an actual photo copy of a death certificate in Putnam County?

Also, the Furneral Home director was Otto F. Lakin; could someone tell me what funeral Home he worked with and whether that funeral home is still in business? If not in business, where their records are?

Oh, the person I am research is Jame Allen Cox, called Squire. The death record calls him Squire, but that is simply what the family called him. He was born 15 Jan 1818 in Kentucky and died 9 June 1900 in Putnam Co., IN.

His first wife was Nancy W. Harrar and second Cynthia A. Vermillion. I am looking for death and burial records for both of them.

I am looking for information on a John Gregory who was living in Boone Co., IN on the 1880 census with his son, Thomas Gregory. Another Thomas J. Gregory is living with them also. He is believed to be John's nephew.
John was born Jul 16, 1798 in North Carolina and died Jun 30, 1884 in Boone Co.
There is a John Gregory who married a Mary Vaughn on Sept. 2, 1870 in Harrison Co., IN. I believe this may be him as he had connections to Harrison Co., too. He does not list a wife on the 1880 census.
They had three children:
Thomas--Married Marsha McNabb
Rebecca--died in 1851 in Putnam Co.
Andrew--Married Mary McVey in 1843--Died in 1879 in Putnam Co., IN
I don't know if Rebecca ever married.

John Mercer's grave stone

I was in Georgia last year and was able to go to Andersonville Prison.
I took pictures of the grave stones of the men who some of Koscuisko county soldiers served with John Mercer was one of them John is the only Mercer in Andersonville so he has to be Putman Co John Mercer The middle name is W on the stone but this could be Military errors as Indiana also has him with the W middle name

In 1840 these two men bought land at Crawsfordsville, Indiana. There are 2 listings one for 120 acres and the other for 40 acres. Phillip McGowin and Barnet VanLeer are the men. I am interested in the Barnet VanLeer.
This has been a difficult family as the name is spelled so many different ways. Both these men were from Ross County Ohio. IF anyone know either please contact me.

I am hoping someone will recognize the outline/history below about the Otter Creek Church and know if the membership records for this church are available?

Otter Creek Church was organized on December 10, 1853, at the residence of Robert Watson. A membership of twenty-six constituted the organization by subscribing to the articles of faith as presented to them by the committee of the organizers. Elder John Leatherman was the first minister, and John Frank, the first clerk. At the meeting in January, 1854, it was decided to build a log house, located in the central part of section 26, Jackson Township.

About 1889 the society decided to build a frame house just across the line in Putnam County. On December 7, 1889 a majority of the membership held its first meeting in the new house. The minority abandoned the old log house, moved to Union, took over the Wolverton house, and named their society Providence. Elder William Skelton continued his services with both branches of the church. He died at his home in Reelsville, Indiana, about March 1, 1920, at the age of seventy-four years.

I am the previous coordinator for this board, the Putnam Co., IN mailing list and the INGenWeb website for Putnam.

I think it's important that anyone attempting to get death records from Putnam Co. have pieces of information.

1. There seems to be some confusion over the cost of the death certificate. The Putnam Co. office site found through the Indiana Department of Health website indicates that death certificates are $10 for a certified copy. There is also a $10 charge for a genealogy search. Perhaps this accounts for the cost of $20.

2. I have seen the actual books where the information was recorded. Each health department officer would have been responsible for deciding which types of record books were going to be used each year.

3. The books do not always contain the same information or types of information. Name of decedent, place of death, cause of death, and certifying health officer are going to be commonplace. Date of death also will be there, but date of birth or age in years, months, and days may or may not.

4. There may have not been a requirement to record the names of the parents or where they were born.

5. If the parents birthplaces are been required, they would most likely have given just the name of the state.

At one point in time within the last 5 years it was possible to request a genealogical death certificate which gave the names of parents, etc if that information was available. If it is still available you have to ask for it specifically. Otherwise you will get just the simple info of date of death, name, etc. Probably just what was found in the "Information" file listed in one of the other messages.

Finally, the last thing you have to remember and perhaps the most important is that these people you are dealing with are county officials and their primary concern is the day to day business of the county's health department. If you lived in that county that's what you would want your tax dollars to be used on.

I was given a tip by another McCarty Researcher that my McCarty family may have been from Putnam County. I'm trying to trace Permilla McCarty who was born in 1820 and died in 1899 near College Corner, Ohio. She married Isiah Phenis in 1855 and the two of them raised 17 children.
She was related to Aaron P McCarty who had a traveling medicine show and called himself Chief White Eagle. Aaron's father was Joseph McCarty, an elder in the Church of the Brethren, who established a church in Arcadia Indiana. Joseph was born in 1817.

Hi, I'm looking for information on how to find a will or estate record. I'm looking for Nathan Godwin and Brother Etheldred Godwin who were on the Clay Co, IN Census in 1830 and Putnam Co in 1840. I cannot find Nathan in 1850, but I believe his brother Dred is found on 1850 Putnam Co Census. So I believe Nathan died between 1840 and 1850.

Seeking info on the fate of Cyrus Andrew Rader who was born circa 1900 in Putnam Co. IN, the son of John H. and Elizabeth J. Rader (his siblings were Cecil, Stella, Paul, and Grace).

Cyrus graduated from Bainbridge High School in Putnam Co. in 1917, and the next year he married Clara Fisher, the daughter of John T. and Jeanette (Hodshire) Fisher.

By the time of the 1930 census, they had two daughters (Jeanette born circa 1927 and Judith born circa 1930).

Any information on the fate of any of these family members would be appreciated!

Putnam Co, In Smith/Hotsinpiller/Filer families

I see several connections between the Smith/Hotsinpiller/Filer family.

James B. Smith married Sarah A. Hotsinpiller on January 23, 1840, in Putnam Co., Ind. Sarah was the daughter of Jacob Hotsinpiller I (b. between 1770-1780).

Mary Hotsinpiller, another daughter of Jacob Hotsinpiller married Benjamin Filer October 28, 1837, in Putnam Co., Ind.

Mary and Benjamin Filer's son, Jacob Filer married Sarah Elizabeth SMITH, daughter of Samuel B. Smith (brother to James B. Smith). They also had a daughter, Sarah Catherine Filer who married Charles Clem Smith, another son of Samuel B. Smith.

Benjamin Smith married Amelia Seagle, widow of Jacob Hotsinpillar II (b. 1773). Benjamin was born September 14, 1815, in Frederick Co., Va. How does Benjamin relate to Samuel B and James B. Smith? They were both born in KY, while Benjamin was born in Va. Are they cousins?

Anybody have anything on him??

Does anyone have any information on a Carl Rice. I dont have any dates on him.
He married Derussa Mae Hufford (maiden name Winstead) on June 8, 1904 in Hendricks Co. Ind. She had family in Putman co also.
They had two children
Herman- Born in 1907 in Ind.
Died- ?
Vivian- Born 1912 in Ind
Died in Fla.
Derussa is buried in Clayton Cem. but I cant find out what happened to Carl.
May have lived in Marion Co awhile. I have a couple of pictures if anyone wants to see them.

Edwin BROWN / Martha Ellen BARTLEY

I would love to share info with anyone working on this Edwin Brown family. I am working on my BARTLEY family history!!!!
Edwin Brown was born Jan 03, 1901 in Indiana. He married Martha Ellen Bartley on July 08, 1922. Edwin died Sept. 18, 1982 in Roachdale, Putnam Co., IN. I do not know Edwins parents at this time......Martha Ellen Bartley is the daughter of Creed Parish Bartley and Flora Bell Henry. Martha Ellen was born Dec. 01, 1900 in Piatt Co., Illinois. She died Mar. 05, 1959. Edwin and Martha Brown are buried in the Lower Mound Cemetery in Perrysville, Vermillion Co., Indiana. Edwin and Martha Ellen Brown had these children:
Leon, Maxine, Lucille, Venemore, and Bartley Brown. Bartley just passed away in the year 2000.
I would love to talk to anyone who knows of this family from Putnam and Vermillion Co., IN.

Trying to find out where they entered the US and what happened to Bartholomew. Also Julia Mulvihill c.1860, in Vigo Co.IN with her parents, Thomas and Bridget Mulvihill.
