John Zachariah ESTER and Elizabeth HOOVER, married 1850

Would like to correspond with anyone who has information concerning John Zachariah ESTER, born June 24, 1824, died November 28, 1891 (maybe in South Dakota) and Elizabeth HOOVER, born February 7, 1826, died December 12, 1913. They were married in Ripley County, Indiana either June 3 or 6, 1850.

Family history has it that Zachariah ESTER came to the United States from Luxembourg. His name may have been ASTER.

Children of Zachariah and Elizabeth:

1. Susan ESTER married Fred HALLIDAY 1869.
2. Sophia ESTER married Alfred HANCOCK September 1872.
3. Christine ESTER married Thomas WILLIAM(S?) July 3, 1870.
4. Henry ESTER married Ruhamy HENDRICKS.
5. Elizabeth ESTER married Mahlen HENDRICKS.
6. Mary ESTER married John SHULIA June 21, 1886.
7. George Wolfgang ESTER, born August 18, 1856 Ripley County(?), Indiana, married Frances Sophia ANDERSON September 22, 1894 in Platte, South Dakota.
8. Charles ESTER.

It's possible that Zachariah moved to South Dakota sometime in the late 1800s. Is there anyone that could check Ripley County land records for any transactions by him?

Any information on any members of this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

G.
I'm looking for information on Robert J. Meisberger son of John Meisberger(b. 1848). My gg grandfather was named Robert J. Meisberger and I am trying to find out if he is that same as Robert John Meisberger. My dad seems to remember that he was named Robert James, but all I find is information on Robert J.. None of the information(with exception to a war record) states Robert's middle name.

Any information available would be greatly appreciated!

My son and I are currently working on transcribing and photographing numerous cemeteries in Ripley County. We are concentrating on the Batesville Area right now. We are adding them to findagrave. Here are the ones that we have done the most work in.
LITTLE MEMORY ( pretty much done)
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=19...
ST. It would be great if anyone that has obits or info such as parents, wives etc. to contact me and i can add it to the memorials. Some of these stones are just about gone and this may be the last chance that we have to document them.
Please feel free to email me at kim_donley@yahoo.com and put findagrave in the subject line. Also if u know of any family cemeteries or any that are hidden away Please! email me and let me know about it. We have already been taken to one that is completely unrecognizable with no way to document it or even mark it. Thanks KIM
Oh i almost forgot if u find mistakes just let me know some of these stones are almost impossible to read.....

I'm new to this, so bare with me. I am looking for information on Robert James Meisberger(wife Lana H. Sullender) and his decendents. He is my great great grandfather. My father used to receive reunion invitations until he moved several years ago. So, I was curious as to my relation to the Meisberger's in Indiana as that is where Robert James was born. His parents were also born there. When I search for Meisberger on the internet, Ripley, Indiana often comes up along with the names Peter and Nicholas. I don't know if there's any relation, but I'd like to find out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look up request, Ripley County, Minnie Myers Preble

Hello, I'm hoping someone out there has access to something that might tell who the parents of Minnie Myers were. All I know about Minnie is that she married Fredus Walter Preble (son of Harvey and Ellen Amanda Kelly Preble) about 1918, that she was born about 1895 in Indiana, and hopefully they were married in Ripley County, as this is where they lived in 1920 with Harvey's parents. Myers is a very hard name to locate, and I have never had any luck just searching for "Minnie Myers", so it may be a nickname. I'd really like to know the name of her parents! Thanks in advance for any help! Jennifer

I am searching for information on Phillip Henry Platter who came to Ripley Co. from Ross Co., OH. He may have married Emily Redding in OH. At least one of his children, Jonathan Tibet Platter was born in Ripley Co., on 12 Nov 1835 according to later IA records. I have found only one Platter in Ripley Co.: Henry. Perhaps, like his father, he chose to go by his middle name? I did find a marriage record for his wife Emily in 1842 showing Mrs. Emily Platter's marriage to Thomas T. Perry. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information about Phillip "Henry" Platter or any of his descendants. Thank you for your help.
Am hoping the book could shed some light on the background of Anthony and John ROMWEBER. Thanks.
I would be delighted to correspond with anyone who is researching these families. The particular names of my ancestors are: Peter Rutledge, Jacob Rutledge, Elias Robinson Rutledge, Edward Andrew Rutledge, Amanda Jane Rutledge, Ruth Robinson, Lawrence Lingle, Lydia Ann Lingle, Elizabeth Mock, Michael Mock, John Shorten, James Walter Shorten, Catherine Barfield, Clark Lester, Eliza Jane Lester, Caleb Sumner Sr., and Polly Sumner. I did not mention siblings of these ancestors because the list is fairly exhaustive in and of itself. I do have some information on siblings, too. I'm willing to share all the information I have.

I am researching Hezekiah Allen Richardson and his two wives. With wife #1, Salina Almira Huntington, he had 5 children - Joseph A, Julia E, Iretta M, Cary Bell, & Wilbur F.

With wife #2, Sarah A Ogden, he had 6 children - Laura SA, William H, Edward F, Robert E, Birdie, & Mattie. The 1900 census says they were married 26 years, but the IN Marriage book J says they were married in Oct 1871. The census, also says she was the mother of 6, 4 living.

In 1880, they had living with them a Franklin O, age 8. I am trying to place which mother is Franklin O's.

If I had a death date on Salina Elmira Huntington Richardson, it would help to put these two families into perspective. A birth date for Franklin O might also help. All I know for sure, is that Salina died after 25 Jul 1869 and before 24 Oct 1871 (Hezekiah's remarriage date).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Christine

I noticed on their web page that Jacob and Nancy Funkhouser's cabin that was built I believe it said around the mid 1800's is part of the society's "museum." Their daughter, Nancy Funkhouser married Benjamin Castor. I am a descendant of Benjamin's brother Samuel Castor. I learned the above information while working on my family history.
:)

Lori Harvell
Jefferson County History Blog

I have created a blog for posting articles about Jefferson County History. I know that there are many researchers with connections in Ripley County who are also interested in Jefferson.

http://jeffersoncountyindiana.blogspot.com/

I am doing this to start getting information from my rapidly evolving book on the history of Jefferson County into the public. I hope to publish by 2009. It's probably more than anybody needs to know about the county up to roughly World War I. I am writing it because of the approaching bicentennial of Madison and because there's never been a history of Jefferson County written that was very good and a lot of information circulating about the county has become disconnected from the source material that, even when true, it's hard to tell why we know it's true. Also, so many histories have concentrated on the great man and great houses of Madison's Golden Age that the rest of history has been given short shrift.

I will be digesting information, hopefully a regular basis.

Suggestions, ideas, corrections are welcome.

Bob Scott

The first two posts:

John Sheets--Man of Action

Madison, 200 Years--Which 200 Years?

Susan Williams Knapp and Charles Knapp c. 1850

I am working on the Williams family which came to Ripley County in the 1830s from Butler County Ohio, and prior to that, Moriah, Essex County NY and Hartland, Windsor County Vermont. Susan Williams was the daughter of Simeon Williams (born 1763 in Stonington CT, died abt 1847 in Ripley IN) and Tirzah Knight (?) (b. abt 1765, died abt 1850 in Ripley IN) I am MOST interested in determining if Knight was Tirzah's maiden name. None of Simeon and Tirzah's nine children had death certificates except my gg-grandmother Sarah Williams Doolittle who died in 1889 in Rush County IN and her certificate listed only her father's name.

Charles and Susan Williams Knapp had at least 3 children:
1. Adin Williams Knapp (16 May 1824-15 Feb 1905)who married Sarah Permelia Cady.
2. Terzah Knapp who married David Laing in Ripley on 17 Dec 1845 and had 3 children Mary, Eliza and David.
3. Susan Knapp who married David Hastings and had the following children: 1. Simeon David Knapp, born May 19, 1860 at Delaware IN and died July 7, 1924. He married Luzety Jane Huntington Dec 29, 1880 (she was born May 13 1861 near Osgood IN) They had 3 children: Mary Ellen, Ollie Edna, and Grace Luella. Grace Luella married Frank Pettit in 1909.

2. Nancy Hastins, married George Robins.

3. Cedoris Hastings.

4. James Hastings, married Eva Stevenson.

I have more info on the Williams line prior to the 1850s.
There are many people doing research who are descended from Ephraim Willson (Wilson) and his wife Catharine of Ripley County. It seems it would help facilitate this research if we were more united and could share and compare information. If you are researching this family, please post a response message and list which of their 15 children you are descended from. I am a descendant of his sixth child Henry and his wife Margaret Hamilton Wilson.

Diane Bockhorst

His parents were also living with them.

The children of Peter and Victoria:

Barbara Bicka, born 1864 IN, parents born France
Mary Bicka, 1868 IN, parents born France
Catherine Federle, 1871 IN, father born Baden, mother born IN
George Federle, 1875 In, father born Baden, mother born IN

In the 1900-30 census, I did not find the family in Ripley County. In 1900, there is a George B., age 24, in Pleasant Township, La Porte County, IN, but I cannot verify that this is indeed him.

I would greatly appreciate any information on the family after 1880.

Thank you.

Patricia Montero
Patmontero25@hotmail.com
Simeon Williams and Tirzah Knight died before 1855

I am searching for the parents of Tirzah Knight who married Simeon Williams. Tirzah was born about 1763 in Connecticut and according to an old family letter, her brothers held high judicial office in CT. The Williams and Knight families lived in the "Valley" near the Connecticut River near Hartford and had a large estate called Meadow Lands. They died in Ripley Indiana before 1855.

Simeon might have been born in Stonington CT in 1763. Simeon and Tirzah had 9 children: John, Dyer, Dudley, Henry, Adin, Lois, Susan, Fanny and Sarah. I believe they lived in Hartland Vermont in 1790 and 1800, then Essex NY in 1810, then Butler Ohio in 1820 and 1830, then Ripley IN in 1840. Simeon supposedly died in 1847 and Tirzah around 1853, both in Ripley County, Indiana. Their children married into Indiana families named: Knapp, Doolittle, McLean, Burr, Strong, Cameron, Haven.

Does anyone recognize this Knight family or know more about when Simeon and Tirzah died?

Andrew & Margaret Weinacht and their six children (Elizabeth,Jacob,John,Adam,Abraham, and Mary) came to America in the late 1840's from Germany. After landing in America, they settled in Milan (Franklin),Ripley,Indiana. Andrew was a farmer and had plots of land in sections 11 and 12, just outside of Old Milan. The Weinacht Name has been spelled many different ways. Some of the different spellings found in Census and Civil War Records are: Wynacht,Weniacht, and Wynought. All of Andrew's sons entered the Civil War, but only John and Adam survived. After the War John and his wife Catharine moved to Minnesota, and Adam (never coming home)went to California. Elizabeth married Benjamin F. Ransom from Milan, and Mary(Catherine)married George W. Crisler from Michigan.

They were both born around 1795. Their children that I have are John, Jacob, Micheal and Francis. There were also two girls but I don't have any names for them.

W. Gilland, died Oct. 9th 1918

Hello,

From what I can tell online, there is an American Legion Post (#267) in Osgood that is named after a W. Gilland from Osgood who died in WWI.

I am in posession of a WWI diary that mentions Lt. Gilland several times in entries that date from the week that Gilland was killed in action in France.

The author mentions being on the front lines with him pretty much on the day that Gilland died (Oct. 9th according to records available online).

The author ended up in a field hospital by October 12th. The name of the author of the diary is V.E. Hodges. I can find no record of him, despite lots of clues (he came through camp Dodge, was a 2nd Lt. in the 350th Infantry, sailed to England on the HMS Delta, etc.).

Is there anybody in the Osgood area, perhaps associated with the American Legion Post, who cares about this sort of thing? I intend to transcribe it (the handwriting is difficult to read); I thought that if there was anyone in the Osgood area associated with the story of W. Gilland, they might like to have the diary...

My ancestor, William Hance Hamilton, bought land in 1818, in an area that became the Jefferson Proving Ground (E1/2SE, Sec 5, T6N, R10E). If I ever get to Indiana will it be possible to visit the area where he lived? It is just west of New Marion, I believe, close to the Jennings County line and the Graham Creek runs through it.

Many thanks,

Gail
