I don't know if I am dealing with a set of twins or with birth date theft.
The 1860 Green Lake County, Wisconsin lists Earl Patton(Patten), age 2 months, son of William F. Patton(Patten) and Eliza Jane Cole. The census was taken July 13, 1860 so Earl would have been born in May, 1860. Earl does not appear in the 1870 census when William and Eliza have moved back to Shelby County, Indiana, and this is is supported by "Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana" which notes that two of Eliza's children died in infancy.
The 1870 Shelby County, Indiana census lists no Earl but Eliza's next child, Rebecka Patten. She was age 9 in 1870 so she would have been born between July 1861 and June 1862. She did not appear in the 1860 census.
In the 1880 Shelby County census, Rebecca is now listed as 20 years old, which would push her birthday back to 1860.
"Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana" and the 1900 census both show Rebecca's birth date as May 1860, but if that is correct, why wasn't she listed with Earl in the 1860 census?
Does anyone have any better information?
