The only census record I have found of Lewey/Lucy/Lydia Ann Allred before marriage are the 1850 census in Shelby County, IN and state census for Iowa in 1856. I looked for most of the descendants of James Montgomery in 1860 and for her two husbands but no luck.
In 1850 Addison Twp, Shelby County are:
Thomas Allred 41 Farmer born TN
Susannah Allred 31 born KY
Wm. Allred 15
James Allred 11
Anderson Allred 9
Eliza J. Allred 7
Malinda Allred 6
Lewis Allred 3
Sandford Allred 1
Lydia A.Allred 3
All children born in Indiana
Rosanah Montgomery married Thomas Allred in 1838 in Shelby County. I don't have another marriage for Thomas so Rosanah in the marriage record could be Susannah of the census record.

Also in 1850in Addison Twp. Shelby County
James Montgomery age 58 born Penn
Jane age 58 born Tenn
Nancy A. 17 born IN
William P. 20 " "
John A. 13 " "
Jane Russell 33 born Tenn

In the Iowa State census of 1856 in Camp Twp. Polk County:
James Montgomery 62 born Tenn
Jane Montgomery 62 " "
Nancy Montgomery 23 born Indiana
Lewis Allred 9 " "
Lewey Ann Allred 9 " "
Also in Camp Twp. Polk County is Anderson Allred age 16 living with the family of William L. Montgomery.
All are listed as haveing lived in Iowa for 1 year except William L. Montgomery (and family) who had been in Iowa 6 years. William L is not a member of James' family but he is from Shelby County Indiana.

So from this I would believe if James and Jane Montgomery brought these Allred children to Iowa they are grandchildren who were orphaned between 1850 and 1855.

Other possible children of James and Jane.
There is also a James M. Montgomery born 1815 in TN who married 1840 Shelby County IN to Mary Jane Montgomery b. 1820 KY and they moved to Polk County, Iowa.

Rebecca Montgomery b about 1822 TN married Robert Montgomery in Shelby County in 1837 (Robert is the brother of the Mary Montgomery who married James M. Montgomery)

So it COULD be that these are siblings
James M b.1815 TN
Jane b.1817 TN m. ?Russell
Rosannah/Susannah b. 1819 TN/Ky
Rebecca b. 1822 TN
Malinda b. 1827 TN m.Wm Applegate
Eliza b. 1829 IN m. James Applegate

plus the 3 in the household of James in 1850.
Nancy and William died in MO and are buried in the same cemetery as Malinda Montgomery Applegate.
I have no more information on John A. Montgomery.

Anderson Allred born is found in the 1880 and 1900 census and gave TN as the birthplace of both his parents.
He married Barbara Ballard 10 March 1861, Polk County Iowa
and Mary E. De Hart 3 Oct 1882 in Andrew County MO.
I have not found him in 1860 or 1870.
In the home of Melinda Montgomery Applegate in 1870 is Lewis "Olred" age 23.

Thanks for the info you sent. Been doing a little research and found where William Applegate died in Matoon, Coles Co., il. 1865. My great grand mother married the first time in 1864. Would like to find a census where she is living with them or someone. Do you know her parents names or any other info on them? What can you tell me about James and Jane Montgomery? Do you know the names of the other children of James and Jane Montgomery? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks Tamme

Tracing Raymond WOOD & Fern DILL WOOD, Shelby Co, IN. 1895 - 1940.

Hi, I am working on the DILL/WORLAND/MCCARTY/EADS/WOOD family histories. Millicent (Mille) McCARTY DILL, was the daughter of Henry McCARTY and Ellen Jane EADS/EADES. Millie's children were Lottie Fern, Olive B., and Jack. Olive was my grandmother.

I have a lot of documentation on Gurney Raymond WOOD and Lottie Fern (DILL) WOOD's childhoods and early marriage years, but am looking to plug some holes. Raymond and Fern both came from Shelby Co, IN and married in 1914. On the 1920 Census they are living together, but the 1930 Census has Fern (listed as married) with her daughter, Dorcus J. Wood, ... but no Raymond.

I would appreciate any help discovering where Raymond may have been in 1930 and future years? Also, I'm looking for information on Dorcus J. Wood. Do you know who she married? I can't find any records except the 1930 census.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Jane Evans (Worland/Dill) Bonacci

Earl Patten/Patton, b. 1860 of William & Eliza Cole Patten

I don't know if I am dealing with a set of twins or with birth date theft.

The 1860 Green Lake County, Wisconsin lists Earl Patton(Patten), age 2 months, son of William F. Patton(Patten) and Eliza Jane Cole. The census was taken July 13, 1860 so Earl would have been born in May, 1860. Earl does not appear in the 1870 census when William and Eliza have moved back to Shelby County, Indiana, and this is is supported by "Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana" which notes that two of Eliza's children died in infancy.

The 1870 Shelby County, Indiana census lists no Earl but Eliza's next child, Rebecka Patten. She was age 9 in 1870 so she would have been born between July 1861 and June 1862. She did not appear in the 1860 census.

In the 1880 Shelby County census, Rebecca is now listed as 20 years old, which would push her birthday back to 1860.

"Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana" and the 1900 census both show Rebecca's birth date as May 1860, but if that is correct, why wasn't she listed with Earl in the 1860 census?

Does anyone have any better information?
I found a 2004 posting you made in 2004. I want to ask you if you have a Jacob K. Krick born 1817 Bavaria, died 1897, Ripley County, Indiana, which is very close to Shelby County. His mother's name was Maria. Jacob and Elizabeth Krick are buried in Cravens Cemetery in Milan. I believe that somewhere there could be documentation as to where Elizabeth's parents (Martin & Alberdina Lambert/Lampert) are buried.

I response to a query on the Montgomery surname board on GenForum, I have been researching the family of Melinda Montgomery born about 1827 TN married William Applegate in Shelby County in 1848 and think she is your Allred's aunt not her mother. I believe Melinda's parents were James and Jane Montgomery who were in 1850 in Addison Twp, Shelby County both age 58.

Rosanah Montgomery married Thomas Allred in 1838 in Shelby County. In the 1856 State Census of Iowa, Polk County James and Jane Montgomery both 62 born TN, with Nancy Ann age 23,also Lewis and Levey Ann ALLRED age 9. In the home of William L. Montgomery (a nephew of Mary and Robert of Shelby County) is Anderson ALRED age 16.
In the 1850 census is the family of Thomas Allred age 41 TN in Addison Twp Shelby County with Susannah 31 KY and many children including Anderson 9 and Lewis and Lydia A. age 3 (another child Sandford age 1 is listed between Lewis and Lydia, I don't conclude that she is not part of this family) I don't have another marriage for Thomas so the Susannah and Rosanah maybe the same person. There is no Allred names in the 1860 census for Shelby County.
Anderson is found in the 1880 and 1900 census and gave TN as the birthplace of both his parents.
In the home of Melinda Applegate in 1870 is Lewis "Olred" age 23.
Margaret Butler listed in 1900 Addison Township

Looking for info on Margaret Butler. In the 1900 US Census she is listed as the daughter of James Butler and Mary Beaty Butler. Listed as being born in Indiana, but that is not correct. She was born in Allamakee County, Iowa (West Ridge-Waukon) in April, 1883. James was married to a Catherine Curtin from Iowa for a little over two years and she died December 13, 1883 after the birth on Margaret. James left Iowa and re-married a Mary Beaty from Richmond, Indiana area. James and Mary's 2 children (John Clare and Pearl C.) were born in Richmond, later moved to Shelby County, Indiana and finally to Indianapolis. Margaret we think left home from Addison Township, and possible went West. Possibly into Western Canada, but not sure. I am trying to make a positive connection of two things. 1.That James Butler who I know for sure his middle name is "Joseph" is the same James Butler from Waukon, Iowa, and 2. that Catherine Curtin had a child named Margaret during the little over two years she was married to James Butler in West Ridge, Iowa. James Butler was born in New York State, I think in Dunkirk, NY in January of 1857. Thank You.

Thank you for your response but I have no real leads on James Price's origins. My George Annis age, etc. is consistent with a George Annis born in Doddington, Cambridgeshire who disappeared from there by time George appeared in OH but I've found nothing to show a connection before they appear in Shelby County IN.

George seems to have spent his final years in the Price home in Wayne County IL so he may be buried near James Price. Do you happen to know what cemetery the Prices are buried in?

James' origin is likely given in naturalization papers filed in the county where he was naturalized, if he became a citizen, so you might try lookling for that.

Jack

I am looking for a list of children for Rene Mahan, born around 1779 in Virginia. He married Mary and they lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky; Harrison County, Kentucky and Shelby County, Indiana. I have a VERY tentative connection from one of my ancestors to Rene, but I cannot make the connection without knowing his children. My ancestor's name is Caroline Mahan, born 1804 in Kentucky. She married Charles M. Webb and then Gerald/Gerrard Spurrier. Charles Webb and Rene Mahan are listed just doors away from each other on a census from Shelby County in 1840. Any help is appreciated!

Hi John,

I am very interested in the Brandywine Methodist Church in Fairland. Are those records also at DePauw? I'm planning a trip to Indiana and would go there if the Brandywine records are available.

Thanks for any help or advice,
Judith
jw62002 at yahoo dot com

Thanks so much! I'm adding Greencastle to my (ever-growing) list of places to research in Indiana. Glad to learn about this one.

If you have any other information to share about the Brandywine Church, my family names are Steward (Stewart), Williams, Henricks (Hendricks), James, Padrick, Wharton, Crum, Ivey and many others!

Thanks,
Judith
Paul Cross, Fallen soldier of WWI

The following is part of the oral history of my family. My grandfather, Earl Francis "Butch"Neal, member of the 150th Field Artillery, 42nd Division, served with Paul Cross in Battery E. The artillery pieces were pulled by teams of horses and part of the gun crew(which had about a dozen men) cared for them(including strapping special horse-issue gas masks in place when the poison gas attack alarm sounded!) while the others manned the gun. These duties were rotated on a regular schedule (unless the unit was under attack). In any event, either duty could be quite arduous. Can you imagine trying to keep horses calm during an artillery barrage? Grandpa said they even tried stuffing cotton in the horse’s ears to help block out the noise. On 5 June 1918 in Baccarat, (Lorraine Sector), France, Butch had just returned to horse duty; when suddenly there was a huge explosion-their gun (a six-inch howitzer) had blown up; killing Paul Cross and Bernard Hurst of Shelbyville and wounding Frank Roth Huntington of Decatur County. Grandpa said that part of the lanyard (rope) which, when pulled, fired the weapon, was still clutched in Paul's hand. I can't help thinking how close the school came to having the Earl Neal Gym and how my mother, Frances Evelyn would not have been born and I would not be here writing this.

George, Alexander & Alice Rains Virginia Ohio Indiana 1800's

I am looking for information on George Rains and his son Alexander Rains.

George died in Shelby County, Indiana around 1835. He was married to a Mary Ann. After his death, she married John Keith in Shelby County, Ind.

Alexander was born in Virginia (West Virginia)in 1820. He went to Indiana with his parents, maybe through Ohio.

My Great-grandmother Alice Rains Kelly was born in Boggstown on 21 May 1871, daughter of Alexander Rains 1820-1875 and Harriet Kenton Rains 1835-1874. She married George Kelly in 1890 in Marion County, Ind and died in Rushville, Rush County, Ind. 25 October, 1962.

I also located seven siblings of Alice - John T born 1857, George H Rains 1859-1925, Nancy born 1864, Bill born in 1866, Estelle Rains White born 1869, Sevonig born 1870 and Isabelle Almeda born 1873.

Alice's parents died when she was 3 years old. I think Alice went to live with John and Molly Swails. I believe the Swails lived in Acton, Ind. I haven't found any info on the Swails, nor do I know where the other children went to live. John Swails signed her marriage application as her guardian and listed Alice as an orphan.

Any info will really help

I would like to contact a family member as this is a beautiful bible with dates back to 1790 with photographs, a wedding invitation from 1882, high school graduation invitation from 1893, a calling card and notes. Please contact me at blueiizz_38@yahoo.com. I would love to be able to get this bible back to the rightful owners.

Some of the names are Chapman, Hitchock, Tindall, Miller, Kennedy, Blanchard
