Hi Sue:
Sorry I haven't checked back sooner. Still looking for more info on the Collins family. We believe we may have found our Elijah William Wilson Collins parents. We believe they are Elizah (Elijah) Collins md to Catherine (?). We found them in the 1850 Switzerland Co Census.
We knew that our William had a brother named Jeremiah b abt 1833 and that is how we found the parents. We are still searching.
Lee Ann Collins
russtyann@yahoo.com
Federal Censuses for Indiana

For those who have not already discovered the site, there are free census transcriptions for Indiana counties at www.us-census.org/states/indiana.

These transcriptions are very useful to researchers who do not have access to images. They can also be useful to researchers who do have access to images because in many cases, they are prepared by people do research in the areas they are transcribing, and they are able to provide a more accurate index of names.

These transcriptions have been done by volunteers who work for free and provide their work at no charge, and the number of transcriptions available depends upon the number of volunteers willing to do the work. Because of this, very little is available for Vanderburgh County.

If you do research in Indiana, be sure to check and see if there are transcriptions available for the areas you are researching. Also, PLEASE consider volunteering to do a transcription, even if it's only one township. Your work can help hundreds, if not thousands, of your fellow researchers.
He was born around 1927, and around 1946/49 he was working has a "fire man" for the C&EI Railroad. Specifically, he was at the C&EI Roundhouse in Evansville Indiana.
In Nedra Nell Springer's obit 2002 it also listed a sister-in-law Thelma Springer. She died Nov 19, 2008 at the age of 95 yrs in Evansville. It listed a niece Sandra and Eugene Flick of Evansville. So Nedra Springer's daughter Sandra Flick was still in Evansville at that time. Hope this helps.

John W. Shreve's, Edwin's brother, funeral card identifies their father and mother:

Lena, Harold was not mentioned as a survivor on his mother's funeral card but her Step Daughter, Dorothy, was mentioned.

However, there is a Cathaleen V. Shreve that died in 1982 without any survivors who could have been her daughter, Cathleen. So I am not as sure. Perhaps there was fallout in the family.

To access the Browning site go to: http://browning.evcpl.lib.in.us/. Select "Standard Search." Then enter a name; first, last or both.

John W. Shreve's, Edwin's brother, funeral card identifies their father and mother:

Descendants of John Wesley Shreve, Sr.

1 John Wesley Shreve, Sr.
.. +Martha Powell
..	2 Edwin Shreve	b: Abt. 1895	d: 08 Sep 1944 in Evansville, IN
...... +Mary Chambers	b: 04 Aug 1902 in Indiana	d: 25 May 1980 in Medco Center - North, Evansville, IN
..	2 _______ Shreve d: Bef. 01 Nov 1979
...... +Robert Gregory
..	2 Mattie Allen Shreve d: Aft. 01 Nov 1979
...... +Wade Lewis
..	2 John W. Shreve, Jr.	b: 11 Nov 1890 in Morganfield, KY	d: 01 Nov 1979 in St. Mary's Hospital, Evansville, IN
...... +Anna C. McBride	b: Abt. 1898	d: 19 Jun 1978
..	2 Lionel Shreve d: Aft. 01 Nov 1979

I am not certain but they had relatives in Morganfield, KY. The normal migration pattern was from Union County to Evansville so they were most probably from Kentucky. I would take a look in Union County, KY.

Let me know what you find.

Mike

I did not find Harold's graduation year book photo though & sent it to Moe (Monette) & I'm sure she will love having that for she has never seen a picture of Harold.

Thank you for including the tree outline too, it's always great to have something to work from & your sending me the outline will aide me a lot I'm sure!

Sincerely,
Lena

I'm afraid I can't add anything to your research. James Blanchard and Nannie Burdette married in 1885 and in the 1900 census indicate that Nannie had 4 children, with 2 then living. Those two were Mary and Harry. In the 1910 census, Nannie says she has 0 children, with 0 living. I suspect the second number is correct and that none of her children survived. Since they were living in Vanderburgh Co and Nannie was buried at Locust Hill Cemetery in Evansville in 1924, it might be worth checking there to see if any of her children were buried there as well.

James and Lula Blanchard are in the 1930 census of German, Vanderburgh Co IN, but no one else is living with them at the time.

Hi! I am researching the Family of James H. Blanchard and Nancy (Nannie) Burdette. James Blanchard was the son of Sarah J. Dicker Blanchard Mayhorn. I am not sure who his father was. Sarah J. Dicker Blanchard married my 2nd Great-grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Mayhorn. She was his third wife. They had no children together but she helped my Great-grandfather raise the children that he and my Great-Great-Grandmother, Melissa Pate Mayhorn had. I have a big family portrait of the Mayhorns including James Blanchard. From what I have found Nancy (Nannie) and James had four children: Mary, Harry and James Jr. I am not sure what the other childs name was however there is a child, Freddie(listed in the death records) who could have been theirs. James Jr. died in infancy on January 11, 1893 in Evansville, Indiana. James Blanchard SR. died January 11, 1945 at the age of 80 years. His obituary card says he is survived by his wife Lula J. and there is no mention of any other surviving relatives. I have not been able to find out if Mary or Harry survived their childhood so I do not know if this is the end of this line or not. I have found out who Sarah J. Dicker's parents and siblings were but would like to know more about the family. If anyone out there has any information on these families please contact me at: maryconway52@gmail.com. Thank you. Mary

In addition to Harry J(oseph), Ike did indeed have other siblings, according to census records. These include George, Clara, Laura, William, Edmond/Edward, and possibly Robert. George died in 1887.

Thank you for your very interesting reply. I have several unconnected Evansville HORNBROOK families that I am trying to connect. One of them is the Charles and Malinda family you mention. I suspect, based on the 1850 census, that Charles was the son who appears in Evansville with widow Mary HORNBROOK (born in England), along with "Lillias" and Robert, age 10. At initial glance, it appears that Mary could be the widow of Saunders HORNBROOK, Jr., but he died in 1834, before Robert amd maybe Lillias were born. So these may not have been Mary's children. I also found the remnants of this family in the 1900 Census, with widow Malinda shown as "Emma" and sons Edman/Edward/Edmond, 32, and "Ity", 24.
Thanks again for the valuable clues!

I'm trying to determine the parents of Isaac "Ike" E. HORNBROOK who appears as head of household in the 1910 and 1920 Census in Vanderburgh County. I can't seem to find a candidate for him anywhere in the US in the 1880 or 1900 Census. He was born in Indiana about 1873, married about 1894 to Margaret "Maggie" AMSTEAD who died before 1920, and possibly was married again to Lena HARL. According to the Census, his children were: Carl, born 10 Dec 1894. died 23 Jul 1921; Dewey, born about 1899. Ike was a Spanish-American War veteran (1898-99) and organized Evansville VFW Post 1114 in 1932.

You mention a 1900 census -
1900 Brookville, Franklin, Indiana
Burke, Louis L, head 71 widowed born Mch 1829 IN:VA:NC Publisher

Remember that the "Perry County History" mentioned Louis L Burke "removed his plant to Brookville, where for several years he published ..."
AND this Louis L Burke in 1900 has the same "birthplaces" as the Louis L Burke in the 1880 census (Washington, DC) with Margaret L.

Could they BOTH be in the 1900 census, and BOTH listed as WIDOWED? Well, I suppose that legally they WERE both widowed! They were both married more than once. Which leaves the question open on whether Louis & Margaret were married-and-divorced, married-and-separated, or never-married!

1860 Cannelton, Perry, IN
Burke, L L/30:IN/printer, Maria/26:KY, Bettie/9:NY, Susie/4:KY

1850 Troy, Perry, IN
Burk, L L/21:IN/printer, Elizabeth/17:IN

Assuming that Lewis L Burke married Margaret L Wann, then
trying to work backwards from Margaret Wann, I found these -
(assuming that Margaret L married Mr. Wann before marrying Lewis L Burke) -
Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941
Name: Margaret Carman
Spouse Name: Daniel Wann
Marriage Date: 16 Aug 1863
Marriage County: Vermillion
Source Title 1: Vermillion County, Indiana
Source Title 2: Index to Marriage Records 1850 - 1904
=====
Name: Margaret Randolph
Spouse Name: William Wann
Marriage Date: 9 Dec 1858
Marriage County: Fountain
Source Title 1: Fountain County, Indiana
Source Title 2: Index to Marriage Record 1848 - 1920
=====
Name: Margaret L Sullivan
Spouse Name: Henry L Wann
Marriage Date: 17 Jan 1854
Marriage County: Hamilton
Source Title 1: Hamilton County, Indiana
Source Title 2: Index to Marriage Record 1850 - 1879
Source Title 3: W.
Based on the continuity of addresses in City Directories and Censuses, it appears that Margaret L Burke (Wife of Louis L) is the same person as Margaret Sullivan Burke (the female Washington correspondent) -

1880 Washington, Washington, District of Columbia
address: 1602 Fifteenth Street nw
Burke, Louis L/52:IN, Margaret L/44:IN,
(), Hinda L/18:IN, Oswald N/13:IL, Raymond L/8:VA

1900 Washington, Washington, District of Columbia
address: 1602 "15th St South of Sq"
Burke, Margaret/64:IN:KY:NC/Feb1836/widow/4:3children
(), Hinda L/28:IN
NOTE: Hmm - Margaret apparently had FOUR children.

1910 Washington, Washington, District of Columbia
address: 1602 15th St
Burke, Margaret L/74:IN/widow, Louisa H/48:IN

Boyd's Directory of The District of Columbia
> incomplete list - I was looking for Louis -
1884 - Burke Louis L, printer, 1602 15th nw
1886 - Burke Louis L, g pr o, 1602 15th nw
1886 - Burke Hinda L, draftsman, 1602 15th nw
1888 - Burke Margaret S, journalist, 1602 15th nw
1888 - Burke Hinda L, clk p o d, 1602 15th nw
1895 - Burke Margaret S, journalist, 1602 15th nw
1895 - Burke Hinda L, clk p o d, 1602 15th nw

Perry County: A History (Perry County, IN: page 293)
Similar conditions six years later determined the fate of the Cannelton Gazette, a weekly founded during the summer of 1886, ... Louis L. Burke, for twenty years resident in the District of Columbia, returned to Perry County, and established the paper which lasted less than a year, ... Burke removed his plant to Brookville, where for several years he published the American with fair success.

Articles in the Washington Post (Washington DC) appear with the byline MARGARET SULLIVAN BURKE. (a journalist)

Washington Post, The (Washington, D.C.) > 1917 > March > 17
Deaths Reported - Margaret S. Burke, 78 yrs, 1602 15th st. nw.

By continuity of the address "1602 15th St nw" in censuses & city directories, I would say that Margaret L Burke (mother of Hinda, wife of Louis) is the same person as Margaret S/Sullivan Burke (writer & correspondent). I *do* point out a discrepancy of age in the Death-Report versus the census - but then again, wanting to remain a correspondent, she may have mis-reported her age at some point.

Washington Post, The (Washington, D.C.) > 1917 > March > 25
Members of The League of American Pen Women have joined numerous other literary organizations in resolutions of condolence on the death of Mrs Margaret Sullivan Burke, of this city for many years writer and newspaper correspondent. Mrs. Burke had a literary career which covered a wide field and dated back to her seventeenth year. She made a reputation as a writer of poetry in her native state of Indiana, where she was known familiarly as "Maggie Lute". ...
NOTE: this article has no dates, and no mention of a husband.

Here's a possible Indiana marriage -
Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941
Name: Lewis L Burke
Spouse Name: Margaret L Wann
Marriage Date: 20 Nov 1865
Marriage County: Marion
Source Title 1: Marion County, Indiana
Source Title 2: Index to Marriage Record 1861 - 1865

Hmm - that address doesn't quite work with Hinda's birth -
1870 Barry, Pike, Illinois
Burke, L L/41:IN, Maggie/33:IN, Hinda/8:IN, Oscar/3:IL
Am not related, just trying to help. Remember that the records I am looking at are transcribed and the originals may vary. Ike Hornbrook married Magggie Amstead in Vanderburgh county on 9 Apr 1895, source is book 18, page 41. In the supplemental info Ike was 22, parents were Chas and A, Maggie was 18 and parents were Louis and Irma, source is book C-3, page 127. I am going out on a limb and say that Ike's parents were Charles P Hambrack and Malinda Miller who married in Vanderburgh County on 15 Apr 1851, sorce is book 2, page 227. You can find the family in Vanderburgh county in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses. In 1860 they are in Evansville township, page 5, in 1870 they are in Evansville Ward 6, page 57, and in 1880 they are in Evansville, Dist 85, page 41. In 1880 Ike's name is misspelled as Ito. Hope this helps. Don

Hello, Alta Mae is my Great-Great Grandmother. Her son James Lindsey was my mother's father. I have been told by my grandmother that this side of the family wasn't people that should be messed with. I have spoken to my grandmother about this and she does know most of these people. Mainly my grandfather's siblings. She said that Edward Johnson's family came around once in a while. SO there is a connection there! Let me know if uyou find anything else. Thank you so much!
-Jessica

floridajessy16@hotmail.com

If you knew Wally Walden, he was my brother-in-law. Joe Walden was my father-in-law.
We checked with Browning Funeral Home. The only record they have on Charles W. Walden was his age and date of death. They don't even know where he was buried. They must not have been good at record keeping back then. We plan to check with the Vanderburgh Health Dept to see if they have more info on him. If he was 53 at time of death that makes him 10 years too old to be the Walden we are looking for.
We have conflicting information on Charles Wesley Walden. His mother died in Sept. 1906. Her obit says she has three living children. Artie and the girls. His son was born in Dec. His wife, Susan died in April and baby Joe was placed in the Veach orphanage. When Joe got older, he was told his father put him in the orphanage. So did Wesley die in 1906 or did he put his son in the orphanage and leave?
thank you, that book is excellent It has the time of arrival of the Henson I was looking for and also his brothers. But of course my luck it mentions One brother Phillip and his children but not John Hensons children. I appreciate your search. I do have all the census records of both Hensons one died around 1883 the other 1910. I have been thinking about ordering the certificate from Illinois. If it is available, It shoud be, I have all the civil war records. A lot of Hensons were buried in the Henson Cemetery in Orchardville Illinois but not William C Henson.abt 1883 Thank you for helping Mary

Marriage Lookup: Louis Lunsford Burke married Margaret Sullivan about 1853.

Would someone check and see if the following marriage took place in Vanderburgh Co., IN please?

Louis Lunsford Burke (or L. L. Burke) married Margaret (Sullivan?) about 1852 or 1853 in (possibly Vanderburgh) Indiana.

Louis L. Burke's first wife, Elizabeth Huckeby, died in 1852 in Perry Co., IN.

I know that Louis Burke remarried after Elizabeth's death to a Margaret. I have been told that Margaret's maiden name was "Sullivan" and that she (Margaret Sullivan Burke) was the first woman to be admitted to the Washington, DC Press Gallery and other such honors. I don't know if this is the same Margaret. However, Louis and Margaret Burke did live in Washington, DC for many years after living Indiana.

One source on the internet stated that Margaret Sullivan Burke was born in Evansville, Indiana. Louis L. Burke was listed in the 1850 and 1860 census as living in Perry Co., IN, but he did have ties to Spencer Co., etc. Louis may have married Margaret in Vanderburgh, Spencer, or Perry counties, I don't know.

Louis L. Burke (c.1829-aft.1900) was listed as a widower in the 1900 Franklin Co., IN census. Margaret apparently died in the late 1890s.

Any information on Louis Lunsford Burke and/or Margaret Sullivan Burke would be really appreciated.

Jesse Stamper

Have you traced the families in the US Census records? Then you would get an approximation of their death dates. If any of them lasted past 1877, you'll be able to order their death certificates.

Is there a Family History Center near you? They have dozens of records on Wayne County, including will indexes and cemetery inscriptions. You'll need to pay for microfilm, though. (See familysearch.org to find a history center/library.)

Also, I don't think that this provides the Henson's parents names, but it does have details on John and William, among others in the family. See the book (fully online, free) "History of Wayne and Clay counties, Illinois (1884)" at:
http://www.archive.org/details/historyofwaynecl00chic

Unfortunately, Vanderburgh County birth records only date back to 1882.

The County has marriage (from 1818) and probate records (from 1821) though. You may be able to find clues for the Hensons in those.

Did William or John get married? If so, their marriage records could list their parents' names.

Have you tried their death certificates? Those should list their parents' names, too.
