Farming accident kills county woman

By the Plain Dealer staff

A Wabash County woman was killed Friday morning in a farming accident on her farm in rural Urbana.

The woman, Sharon Penner, 46, 4913 E. Ind. 16, was pronounced dead at the scene by Wabash County Coroner Marilyn McDonald.

According to Det. Capt. Mike Shrider of the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department, Mrs. Penner’s husband, Vern, called to report the incident to the sheriff’s department at 8:24 a.m.

Shrider said Penner told police he and his wife had been loading cattle onto a trailer when he went to take care of a bull.

He told police he heard the gate rattle and went to check on Mrs. Penner.

Shrider said it is believed that she was trampled by the three cows she was attempting to load.

A veterinarian was called to the scene to take blood samples from the cows.

Shrider said they want to eliminate the possibility of the cattle having any kind of illness that would cause them to act strangely.

The incident is still under investigation pending results of an autopsy. Indiana State Police trooper Dave Rich is assisting in the investigation. Wabash Fire Department and Urbana first responders also were on the scene.

Mrs. Penner coached girls basketball at Northfield Junior High, and was an assistant coach for girls tennis at Northfield High School.
