I believe she is the dau of Robert Carsel and wife, Nancy, listed in Fabius Twp., Davis Co., IA, 1860 Census, but I have no proof. The mystery is that Robert Carsel apparently is listed as Robert Campbell in the 1856 State Census, Fabius Twp., Davis Co., IA!

I am seeking information on George E. Kelley who married Ella Frances Bean. George was b. May 16, 1816 in New York and Ella Frances Bean b. May 5, 1851 born in Carroll Co., Illinois and died July 2, 1914. She is the daughter of Alanson Bean b. 1811 Hanover, Oxford Co., Maine and Hannah P. Hemmingway b. November 9, 1814 in Rumford Corner, Oxford Co., Maine.
I do not know George E. Kelley's death date or whom his parents are. George was quite a few years older then Ella and could have married before.
Children of George E. Kelley and Ella Frances Bean are:
1. Clistia Kelley b. abt. 1867 Clinton Co., Iowa
2. Pearly Kelley b. Abt. 1873 Clinton Co., Iowa
3. Albion Ranson Kelley b. Sharon Twsp., Appanoosa Co., Iowa
4. Sarah J. Kelley b. January 1888 Appanoosa Co., Iowa
5. Roy H. Kelley or Ray H. Kelly ( I have seen his name both ways on census. b. August 1890 Appanoosa Co., Iowa
Any information on this family would be helpful. I am completley stuck on George E. Kelley since I don't know if he was married before or whom his parents are.
Thank you;
Yvette

Joseph Milburn (1816-1905) England>Canada>Iowa

I have some holes (okay, a LOT of holes) in my research for Joseph Milburn (b 1816 England). I have found him in the 1880, 1900 and 1905(Iowa) census records. These records indicate he arrived in the US in 1869. What I cannot find is the 1870 Census and the 1885(Iowa) Census, and most importantly I can't find his burial place! I have found his son Joseph Sylvester Milburn and his grandson, Joseph Enzely Milburn (my grandfather) in Elgin Cemetery in Mystic, Iowa.
Any ideas? Thank you!

I am looking for descendants of John and Elizabeth (McConnell) Rupe, some of who should still live somewhere in Appanoose County. John and Elizabeth were married in Scioto County, and later moved to Polk County, Iowa, where they are enumerated in the 1850 census. Their children at that time were: Pearson, Julian, Elias, Mary A., and Zachary. In 1860 the wife and some children are in Appanoose County. I presume that John is deceased at this point. Elias is recorded as marrying Hannah Briggs on 18 March 1875 in Appanoose County, and Zachary Taylor Rupe marries Elizabeth Pharney Smith. Their child, Lyman Elza, marries Hetta Belle Shive and has at least twelve children. I am looking for any members of this family, to share information on the McConnell side with them, as I am descended from Elizabeth McConnell's brother Moses Elias McConnell, who lived in Keokuk County. Please email me or call (360) 647-3725 Thanks, Matthew Aamot

A comment...this is my great grandfather. It is mentioned that his parents came to Iowa when he was a child. I don't know if that is really true, as the parents are buried near Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick, Canada...Would love to find some more information about this family.
"Joseph S. Milburn was born in Newbrunswick, Canada, August 20, 1851 and died at Mystic, Iowa, May 21, 1925 at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 1 day. He was the fourth child of a family of eight sons and four daughters, five of whom preceded him in death. With his parents he came to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in early childhood and has lived in Iowa continuously since. In 1874 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Sarah A. Cattern at Cedar Mines, Iowa. To this union was born five children, Joseph Enzley, Lovel Sylvester, Rollie, who passed away in infancy, Rose Milburn-Bainbridge who preceded her father to the better land eighteen years ago, and Frank Milburn all of Mystic and all were present when their father's spirit took its flight. Thirty seven years ago Mr. Milburn moved his family to Mystic where he has resided continuously since that time and worked in the mines up to the present shutdown. About thrity years ago he was converted and worked with the Salvation Army in Mystic and about twenty years ago he united with the United Brethren Church of Mystic where he has held an official relation much of the time since, being the class leader at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his departure a faithful wife, three sons, twelve grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three brothers, Lewis of Lutts, Wyoming; George F. of Abbeyville, Kansas; William H. of Kingsdown, Kansas; three sisters, Ameliea Olive of Arthur Missouri, Caroline Thompson of Madison, Nebraska and Betsy Smith of Fonda, Iowa besides othere relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Staurday May 23rd at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. L. Shaeffer, assisted by Rev. J.E. Haught, pastor of the United Brethren Church. Interment was made in the Elgin Cemetery where the mortal remains will await the resurrection. "

Sarah Sally Tipps (1792 - ?) Appanoose County, Iowa

FROM "The Tipps Family History"
"Chapter 12
Sarah Tipps Family
Sarah Sally Tipps, married Michael Awalt Jr. on September 19, 1811, in Burke County, North Carolina, after he had returned from a five year tour of military duty. Michael, the son of Michael Awalt and Eve Speck, had joined the calvary at Salisbury, North Carolina, and served in the regular army under Captain Christian Limburg. He was discharged in August, 1811. Upon his return to North Carolina and marriage to Sarah, they moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee, that October with his sister and Sarah's father (Jacob Tipps). There in Lincoln County, their first two children were born. Michael joined the service again in 1814, serving in the Tennessee Militia under Captain William Russell for 146 days until the Treaty of Peace (War of 1812). It appears that they had three more children there before moving their family to wayne County, Indiana, about 1822. On June 20, 1827, Michael Awalt paid $200 for 124 acres from John Buddick in Columbus Township, Bartholomew County, Indiana. Michael died suddenly in 1835 leaving Sarah with eight children still at home. After Michael's death, Sarah and her children gave a Quit Claim Deed on this land to Joel Williams on September 15, 1848. The children of age who signed this deed were Henry H., William, George W., Jacob and John Awalt. On the same day, Sarah Awalt also sold land to Joel Williams for $600. It was at this time that Sarah, along with her children and their families, moved to Davis County, Iowa. In 1868, she moved to Appanoose County, Iowa where she lived the rest of her life."

There is also a picture of Hick with this article.
(all misspellings are exactly as they appeared in the article).

"The following article appeared in an Iowa Newspaper several years ago. It is about a diamond in the rough, Albert "Hick" Milburn (George F, William Huffman, Joseph, Jeremiah).

"Hick" died May 12th, 1983. He was unmarried.

Mystic, Iowa. His face is embedded with the gouging lines of age and sickness. A stubble of a beard previously shaven, bristles thickly from the sides of his leathery face. Hands,

once strong, now tremble as he rolls a cigarette from his bright red Prince Albert tobacco can.

To Albert "Hick" Milburn of Mystic, time doesn't mean a thing. Very little interference from the outside world bothers him as he lives alone in his 8 x 14 foot shanty in the woods.

It wasn't always this way though for a man who quit school in the ninth grade with hopes of entering electricians school but never really made it. "I've done everything but factory work,"

Hick recounts. "I've only been in a factory once. it was jus' a small one, but I never did like indoor work."

A broad smile spreads across his mustached face as he continues, "I was borned right here on this land down at the corner. I've worked construction, railroad, farmin' coal minin,

carpentry. Hell, practically anything but fact'ry work."

"My first job was workin' on a farm when I was just fifteen. I helped with the corn plowin' for a cattleman up by Melrose. I made 'bout 30 dollars per month and got my board. Ya see,

my cousin had worked for this guy before and he had come back to get him again that summer. Well, ya see, my cousin was gone so my uncle got me the job. After that, I went to

Rockford and simonized cars and was an usher at the palace theater."

As he slowly settles back in his green garden chair he begins to reminisce, "There was 9 kids in our family and there are four left but they live 'way from here. After I quit school in '25 I

went into other work and eventually learned 'bout carpenterin' and 'lectricity from an old retired feller."

"I don't get 'round much any more though. I don't have any strength left, I do all my business by phone."

In a day and age when big is considered best, why did "Hick" Milburn, jack-of-all-trades, decide to build a place just a touch bigger than a garden shed to live in?

"When I came back here from Rockford, I lived with my mother 'cause she was sick. I started raisin' a few chickens on this land and built this buildin' to store some feed in. Well, perty

soon people would start comin' over and I put a car seat in here so we could sit and shoot the bull. After my mother died I just fixed this up for myself and moved in. That was 'bout 10

years ago. I build this shack a little at a time usin' old lumber a piece at a time. Oh sure, I care 'bout what goes on outside of here, but there's nothin' I can do 'bout it, I got a radio and

a T.V., they keep me up on what's goin on."

"My whole heatin' bill for last winter was only $75, but I can't eat much fried stuff 'cept maybe a little bacon. " he brags. "I got runnin' water so I really got it perty nice."
A confirmed bachelor, Hick's life is very simple, yet fulfilling. he wakes when he wants, sleeps when he wants, and works in his well-groomed garden when he feels like it.

The interior of his shanty is a replica of most major homes, only on miniature scale. he has a full size refrigerator that is about 20 years old, a television and radio, a bedroom, a sink, a

heating stove, a hot plate, and a kitchen table on the wall that has two seats.

"Ya know, I ain't like I used to be. I drop things a lot now. When I pick up a coffee cup my hand will jerk a lot. I've had a perty good life, but I guess I could have prob'ly done better. I

can't go fishin' no more and I miss that."

In an age when it takes money and lots of it for most people to enjoy themselves, "Hick" Milburn looks for the bright side of the little things in life.

"I try to enjoy anything that comes along. There ain't nothin' that I can do very good any more.....".

One might find it hard to believe when talking with this ever smiling man, but "Hick" Milburn suffers from pernicious anemia, a condition in which the red corpuscles of the blood are

reduced in number or deficient in hemoglobin, pernicious is defined in the dictionary as "highly distructive, deadly or fatal."

"Time don't mean nothin' to me," Hick laughs loudly. "I have quite a bit of company and a lot of guys say they're lonely. hell, I ain't got time to be lonesome. I go to bed and get up

whenever i please. More or less, I do as I damn well please, nothin' pressures me."
Appanoose County Biography - Nathaniel McCloud

(not related to me)
Nathaniel McCloud
This well known farmer of Taylor township became a resident of Appanoose County, Iowa, in 1864. He has, therefore, been identified with its agricultural interests for almost forty years, although he did not locate upon his present farm until April, 1901. He was born in Highland county, Virginia, April 4, 1841, the same year in which King Edward of England was born. He belongs to a family noted for industry, honesty, morality and corage. His ancestors came originally from the highlands of Scotland, being descended from McCloud, a Scottish chief, who was prominent in the wars of that country two hundered years ago. His grandfather, Nathaniel McCloud, was also a native of the Old Dominion, as was also his wife Margaret McMahan, who was of Irish lineage.

Nathaniel McCloud, Sr., was a soldier of the war of 1812. He received a land warrant calling for one hundred and sixty acres of government land for his services. Not having a disposition to farm, after having the land warrant in his possession for thirty or forty years he traded it for a horse valued at about seventy-five dollars. He never was the owner of any real estate, but spent his life in hunting wild game in the Cheat and Allegheny mountains. At the age of three score and ten years he died in Pocahontas county, West Virginia, at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. Mahala Jackson.

Their son, George Riley McCloud, father of our subject, was born and reared in Virginia. In early life he wedded Miss Mary J. Warner, a native of Pendleton country, that state. Her parents were James and Jane Warner of Virginia, where they spent their entire lives. The Warners were a well known and prominent family of that state. Two of its representatives became distinguished ministers of the gospel. George Warner was a member of the Methodist Church South. He moved from Pendleton county to Fayette county, West Virginia, where he married and spent the remainder of his life. He died during the war of the Rebellion at an old age. Zebedee, a nephew of the Rev. George Warner and a first cousin of the subject of this sketch, was a minister of the United Brethern Church of Christ, one of its most noted members. He held the degree of LL.D. He was the presiding elder of Clarksburg district, West Virginia, during the war. During his eldership he had a discussion with the editor of the standard church paper, published at Dayton, Ohio. Warner took the position that the discipline would have to be changed on the subject of secret organizations; that the members should have the right to exercise their own judgement as to the teachings of the Bible on the subject of secret orders. Since that time the rules of the church have been changed, thus showing that Warner's position was right. He died in Nebraska at about the age of fifty while serving as a missionary. Z. Warner was married near Boonesville, Maryland, September 11, 1856, to Sarah C. Snively, who survives him and makes her home at Parkersburg, West Virginia. To them were born nine children, seven of whom are still living.

With team and wagon George R. McCloud, N. McCloud and families came to Iowa in 1864, settling in Chariton township, Appanoose county, where George R. followed farming the remainder of his life, dying there at the age of sixty years. He was a Democrat in politics. He had been a member of the Christian church for a number of years, to the time of his death. His widow still survives him, having reached the advanced age of eighty-five years. Of the twelve children ten reached the age of maturity, namely: William E. who died in York, Nebraska, June 11, 1902; Nathaniel, of this review; George; Nancy J., deceased; Elizabeth; Susan; Asa; Amanda; Henry; and Anna.

Under the parental roof nathaniel McCloud passed the days of his boyhood and youth, assisting his father in the operations of farming when not in school. At the age of nineteen years he was married at harper's Ferry, Virginia, September 20, 1860, to Miss Rachel J. Tomlinson, both of Highland county, Viginia, his wife being a daughter of Zacariah and huldah Tomlinson, who made their home there throughout life. She was thrid in order of birth in a family of five children, the others being Henry, Sarah Ann, Hester, and mary, two of whom are now residents of Kansas; the brother Henry lives in Oklahoma, and the other sister lives in Virginia. As previously stated, N. McCloud came to iowa in 1864 and cast his first vote at Moravia, Iowa. The first land he purchased was in Chariton township, in 1870. After securing one hundred and fifty acres of land near Maine Station, he remained a resident of that neighborhood til 1901. He was the promoter of the postoffice known as Maine and served as postmaster during 1887. He afterwards had the name of the postoffice changed to that of Ray in honor of his eldest son. He and family, with many others, were in a cyclone which passed over their home on the evening of May 5, 1894. The cyclone began about six miles west of the home of this family and swept away all the buildings in its path for a distance of many miles, taking away all the outbuildings of this family, leaving the dwelling, but moving it from the foundation. The family took refuge in a cave. Only one person - Mrs. Williams McDanel - was killed in this storm, but a number of others were seriously injured.

William E. McCloud, above mentioned, the eldest brother of the subject of this sketch, came to Iowa at the age of seventeen years. At the age of nineteen he married Miss Ann M. Sears of Taylor township. He followed the occumpation of farming some years, but later in life was an extensive stock shipper, at one time being in partnership with Captain E. Cummins in the shipping business, and afterwards was a partner of R. M. Hicks. Afer moving to York, Nebraska, Mr. mcCloud engaged in the commission business in the stockyards at Omaha; was also one of the organizers of the bank at Waco, Nebraska. his son, C.A. McCloud, and nephew of the subject, is now engaged in the real estate and insurance business at York, Nebraska. He is very prominent in the county in Republican party politics, and is among the wealthiest citizens of his county.

Mrs. Rachel J. McCloud died March 23, 2883, having lived a number of years as a faithful and consistent member of the United Brethern church, leaving one daughter, now Mrs. R. H. Kaster, of chariton township. On June 15, 1884, our subject was again married, his second union being to Mrs. Mary J. Breese, widow of Timothy Breese, deceased. Timothy Breese was a member of the Eighth Iowa Cavalry. he was born in Ohio, but reared in Lee County, Iowa, dying near Iconium, Iowa, December 15, 1880, holding membership in the Christian church at the time of his death. he left three surviving sons: Alpha A., by a former wife; Mary Hazlewood; and Ira E., now of Chicago, Illinois. One son, Everett, died at the age of four months.

What did the H. stand for?
OBITUARY
Centerville Daily Iowegian and Citizen
"Marion Milburn, son of Joe and Nellie Milburn, was born at Mystic,Iowa July 8, 1916 and as a growing boy was steadily developing an increasing interest in both school and church. He had determined that he would make the eighth grade in school without missing and until his final sickness had only missed a half day which was for his grandmother Milburn's funeral.
He had been a regular attendant of Sunday school and was confirmed with the Methodist-Episcopal church March 6, 1927, being fully received into full (illegible) the following March 25th. he has been active in the Junior Apworth League holding different offices and at the last being First Vice President. And the records of the church show his devotion i a larger way.
