I bought a box of pictures at an auction. They are of the Tom Bradstreet family and maybe friends from Souix City. They seem to be about 1900. Anyone who knows any of this family could let them know. I will be glad to send them to a family member. Thanks , grannybn @msn.com

My grandfather's 2nd wife, Ellen, nee Kluck, died in Independence Sept. 18, 1961. I'm looking for further information, such as an obituary, in hopes of finding what happened to my grandfather, Thomas Joseph Dillon, Jr. They had been divorced many years at the time of Ellen's death, but he may have been in contact around that time, but was never heard from after that.

I looked in RAOGK and no one has volunteered for Buchanan County, so decided to check Ancestry Message Boards. Would anyone have time to look for an obit for me?

Lee Spece was born July 17, 1896 and died May 1966. His last residence was in Doris, Buchanan Co., IA.

His name could be spelled Speece.

Thanks.

Jan Dishon
Shelton, WA

I'm look for an obit for Sarah Stevens. I beleave her to be my Great-great-grandmother. If this is the right person she would have a son Frank and a husband Austin. I have found a Sarah R. Stevens buried in the Quasqueton Cemt. old section lot #126. The date of death was May 2, 1871. 30yr. 3d. It also stated she was the wife of Austin J. Stevens. This sounds like a match BUT a family member said that her maiden name was Koostz (or some form of that name). Buried in lot #126 old section along with Sarah is Jacob and Mary Hamm. Mary's stone said wife of Jaocb Hamm and mother.
Buried in a newer section that also Lot #126 is Daniel Kautz Sr. and wife Susan.
I'm 99% sure that I have the right Sarah. I just need to see something that states who Sarah's parents were and that she had a son Frank.

Would anyone be willing to do an obit lookup for Alvah B. Church? I was told he died Jan 15, 1892 but I don't know where. The last census I found for him and his wife Dorcas was in 1885 for Madison Twp, Buchanan Co., IA.

I have unconfirmed info that he was born Oct 1, 1801 in Cambridge, NY. I know he spent some time in PA, then in 1860 moved to Delaware Co., IA.

The 1885 census has them living with Frank Hartnell (corrected as Hartwell) and family. Alvah is listed as being 83 and Dorcas 77. I don't know what the connection is to the Hartwell family or if they were just boarders.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

FELL, Daniel W., 1801-1888, CAN>NY>IL>Buchanan Co., IA

I have a Daniel W. FELL in my family tree. He was born ca. 1801 (or 1805), either in Canada or NY state (depending on which census you look at). The 1840 Census finds him in Jefferson Co., NY -- which is bordered by Lake Ontario, and just a stone's throw from Canada, so my money is on him being born in Canada.

In later census reports, Daniel told enumerators that his father was born in Germany and his mother was born in Wales.

Daniel married Mary T. HOLMES ca. 1833, probably in Canada. She was born ca. 1810 in England. They had 3 children, namely Margaret FELL (b. ca. 1834 in Canada), Stewart G. FELL (b. ca. 1836 in Canada) and Moses John FELL (b. 23 Sep 1838 in New York). That puts their emigration from Canada to the U.S. right at 1837 or so.

In 1850 & 1860 censuses, Daniel FELL and his family lived in Ogle Co., IL. They drop from the map in 1870, but resurface in 1880, living right next door to son, Moses, and family in Buchanan Co., IA.

Daniel died after 1880. His wife, Mary [HOLMES] FELL went with her son Moses & family to Sweet Grass Co., MT, where she died in 1888. It is unknown when they made the move to MT, or if Daniel was with them.

I have lots of info on the descendants of Moses John FELL -- our line -- but nothing on his siblings besides birth years and general locations.

Could YOU have a connection to this line? I would LOVE to know who Daniel's parents were, and if he had any siblings.

Came across this while doing some unrelated research today, and thought I would post it for anyone researching BIRCHARD in Buchanan or Fayette counties.

I believe this Roy W. BIRCHARD was born in Hazleton Buchanan IA and died in Sacramento CA. His wife's name may have been Emma (per WWI draft card).

Idaho Daily Statesman, 1913Sep17
Rube Poet on Long Trip -- Roy W. BIRCHARD, the "Rube Poet," was in town Tuesday. He is making his way from Oelwein, Ia., to Lewiston, Ida., and has so far come over 2000 miles, picking his way along. He supports his family of three children and wife by giving entertainments on the street with his banjo. Mr. BIRCHARD left Oelwein July 5, and expects to reach Lewiston by September 20.
I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Buckhanan County, Iowa as his home of record.

Soldier: EUGENE JONES
Born: March 9, 1932. Caucasian
Date of loss: June 14, 1953. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 26 families in Iowa that have not been located. There is one family from Buchanan County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net

I am looking for information on Elizabeth Pearsall Leslie Moore. She was the daughter of Horace B. and Loania Walker Pearsall. Married to John Leslie in 1853 at Independence. He died Aug 23, 1868 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery. She and her children, Lillabore, Charles S., Frank A. and Lizzie are on the 1870 census. In her father's will it lists her as Elizabeth P. Moore. This will is dated March 21, 1879. John Moore and James Utterback were witnesses. In her mother's obituary in 1882 it calls her Mrs. Moore of Denver, CO. I find an Eliza Moore with a son Frank Leslie and Liizzie Johnson in the 1880 census for Denver, Arapahoe County, CO. No husband is mentioned Notes from my aunts (deceased) are that their father, Karl L. Leslie, mentioned an aunt, Lizzie Moore from Denver. I am wondering what the Moore husband's name was, who Lillabore "Lilly" married and any other information on this family. I do have some leads on the families of Charles S. and Frank A. Leslie
My grandfather, Karl L. Leslie, was a son of Samuel Leslie (John's brother) and Lucia Augusta Pearsall Leslie (Elizabeth's sister).

KIGGINS family

The KIGGINS families, both John & Lewis lived in Independence, Buchanon County, IA when I was a child during the late 1930's or early 40's. I remember going to visit my Great Uncle John KIGGINS in Independence after he had suffered from a stroke. My mother tells me that the whole family of KIGGINS, two boys and four girls migrated from Ohio to Independence, then some of the girls Anne COLLINS, Mrytle JOHNS and Etta Libby FLEENER, my grandmother, moved on after marrying into other families. There was also a sister, Mary who had married Ed LASHBROOK enroute and settled in Waterloo but they had no children. She doesn't know anything about the family prior to the move from Ohio by covered wagon to Independence.
I know that my great grandparents, William and Mary Jane BRYANT KIGGINS are buried in Riverside cemetary, Marshalltown, Marshall county after living there awhile.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? If anyone has any information on the KIGGINS family, would they be willing to share? Thank you very much!
Relationship of Nancy Nesler to Jay Leslie?

In the 1900 census, Nancy Nesler is living with Jay and Eva Schenkweiler/Shankwiller (or something similar) Leslie and their two sons Claude E. and Jay Barney Leslie. Nancy's relationship to Jay is given as "mother." In the 1880 census, Nancy Knowles Nesler is the wife of Harrison Nesler of Posey Co., IN and Carroll Co., IA. There is no evidence of her being the mother of Jay Leslie. Does anyone have any insight into this situation? Were there two Nancy Neslers the same age in Iowa? Is there any possibility that Jay Leslie is the same person as Rhesa J. Nesler?

Looking for information on Henry HERMAN (age 28)-Esther HORAN/HOREN (age 23) marriage of Oct. 9, 1882 at Independence, IA. Esther's family had recently moved to Independence from Lake County, IL, possible consisting of the following:

John HORAN (father, age 67 yrs +/-)
Maria (mother, age 51 yrs +/-)
John Henry (bro, age 29)
Tressa (sis, age 21)
William (bro, age 18)
Charlie (bro, age 16)

Also, a George JOHNSON/JOHNSTON is present at this time (witness on Esther's marriage license); believe he later married Tressa (in Independence?), date unknown.

John HORAN may have moved to Independence because he had relations there.

I'm sure Independence had a newspaper at that time; how do I arrange/pay to get a copy of marriage notice, if published?

Any help would be appreciated!

1882 tornado injuires RICHMOND, kills Wm HOREN (17) & Albert RIPKE (11)

Freeborn County Standard (Albert Lea, Minnesota) > 1882 > June > 29

Cycloning of Another Iowa Town.

A storm of Thursday last was very severe at Waterloo and Cedar Falls. But the storm did the greatest amount of damage at Independence, on the Illinois Central railroad. The town was crowded on account of the appearance of Sells Bros.' circus. The storm struck there about 5 o'clock. The circus tent was blown over, but fortunately no spectators were inside. Three of the canvas men were injured, and a young man named RICHMOND had his shoulder broken.

From there the storm passed through the town, doing great damage. Roofs of a large number of the finest business blocks were taken off, and the scene beggars description. A number of farmers' teams became frightened and ran away, but fortunately no lives were lost in the streets.

In the residence parts of the city the loss of life occurred, William HOREN, aged seventeen, and Albert RIPKE, aged eleven, being instantly killed. The other victim was in the house of Wm. BRADLEY, which was blown down, and he was caught and killed by falling timbers.

There were many hairbreadth escapes and quite a number of people were badly bruised. The loss in the town is roughly estimated at $45,000. In the country great damage was done. The insane hospital is located about two miles west of Independence. The immense smoke stack was blown down, the workshops wrecked and a large part of the mansard roof of the main building was torn off. It is estimated that the loss to the state will be fully $50,000. The hospital for the insane, a grand stone structure, located two miles from town, that has already cost the state $800,000 and now has 543 inmates and 100 employes, was struck by the hurricane and damaged to the extent of $30,000 or $40,000.
Ellen was born 1848 in Ireland. Ellen died April 19, 1910 buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery in Masonville also. I am trying to find out who there parents might be and there children. I know they had a daughter Hanora born in Masonville Iowa September 28, 1868. She died in August 17, 1838 in Sydney, Nebraska and was buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery in Masonville. She married William Penny February 9, 1885. They lived in Masonville and Coffin Grove. Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Linda

An elderly family member has told me that my great-uncle, Harry Christopher Thiele (b. September 30, 1890; death date unknown), "is buried around Independence somewhere."

I am guessing that Harry may still have been alive around 1954, when his mother died--her obituary does not list him as either surviving her or predeceasing her.

Harry's wife was Eugenia Lillian Hixson, and they married circa 1910. Their son, Carl Leslie Thiele, was born in June 6, 1911.

Respond here or directly to metaphor@mbay.net
